My son and I always enjoyed watching the US C-5 Galaxy fly over our home each month. It was always one of those "drop everything" moments when we would run to our back yard and listen to the huge engines whine and see it descending to its destination. We did not know which base it came from or which one it was heading to. The overflights were discontinued a few years ago. 😥

I was stationed at Travis AFB in 1980. Loaded a many C-5’s, C-141’s, C-130’s, 747’S, DC8’S, etc. The C-5 has the smoothest ride when going tdy. Retired years back. Still love that C-5 engine sound.

Pleasure to meat another 605. I assume you were with the 60th APS? I wore the Deeds Not Words patch myself from 1983-1992. Ramp Services, ATOC, Load Planning, then PAX when they combined Air Cargo and Air Pax into Air Transportation... Boy I miss those days sometimes

I was in USAF for 8 years and was stationed at Travis AFB for the last 4 of them; in the subsequent 35.5 years I lived in Fairfield, CA. Over those nearly 40 years, I grew quite used to--but never tired of--these behemoths flying overhead. I've moved since to the Pacific Northwest, so I only occasionally see its smaller cousin, the C-17, these days. My son wanted to be a loadmaster on a C-5, but he would've had to wait quite a while for a position to open. Instead, he is now an avionics technician for F-15Es in North Carolina.

I remember during the preparation for the first Iraq war. I would see the these C-5s taking off from Travis and they were obviously loaded with a lot of weight. As the take off was rather low and much longer than I was used to seeing. I was out fishing at various times out in the Delta and I would see them taking off. The engine noise was also louder.

I grew up on Travis. My dad worked on the KC10s, but the C5s stood out the most by far. It's a shame they replaced the TF39s. The C5s were unparalleled when those were roaring in the sky. I understand completely why they were replaced though. Nowadays they just sound like a 747
