Truck Friendly Intersection

- Stop line that is significantly set back from the intersection, know that it's there for a reason. Here is a very good example where the purpose of this marking is immediately apparent. When turning his truck with a trailer, the truck driver must swing wide so that part of the truck is partially on the opposing lane, requiring that lane to be clear for his maneuver.

Well done most drivers don't realise most people are ignorant of that moniver
Most drivers are ignorant of the set back line. Having driven a semi I am always looking as I come to an intersection for semi’s with turn signals on and I give them plenty of room.
@@glennjohnso310 i try to remember it myself. i also give them a good amount of distance before switching lanes into their lane in front.
Maneuver*
Maybe he is like me not the best speller. Could be an auto correct thing too.
Well done? He made an illegal Maneuver , while that mother with her child was still in the walk. Not Well done at all.
Had some fool stop way past the line while I was attempting to turn, the guy behind him backed way up to give him room to backup, he didn't. So,I set the brakes and stared at him! He then backed up about 3 ft, still beyond the line. I pulled up and stopped again, nearly on his grill. After him flipping me off and yelling at me, he finally backed up far enough for me to complete my turn. The funniest part was the cop who watched it all, then gave him a ticket. 😂
had that happen a thousand times over my career.
At least yours had a bit of the sense to back up... eventually. Most of mine just try to plow on ahead, even though they have almost no where to go anyway, and try to bully me to back up instead and let them complete their idiot turn first! 🙄

Thank God for intelligent city/town engineers/planners.
Can you even imagine if they didn't and even if they do and they do, there's always that one. Bimbo that will go over that line and sit there knowing damn well that truck needs run. I like the ones that are behind the truck. Knowing damn well he has to go into the left lane to make the right Lane swing and where they at all in the f****** way eat truck
The trucking company down that road probably bitched to the city about that intersection, so they changed the lines.
@@AndrewJ-mm3zi Could be a shipping destination too, like a major retail store or manufacturing location that requires regular numbers of tractor-trailer trucks to visit each and every day too.
Once upon a time, we had a Molson's brewery just off of the downtown core of our city, one that had been there for over a century, and they required daily deliveries every 20 minutes of fresh bottles, supplies and shipping out of beer to keep up with demand. You can imagine just how far off the allowable shipping routes that was, and if we didn't have features like this, there's no way that the brewery would have ever survived.

I'm thankful for truck drivers that are good at driving their trucks.
The trucks in America are terrible way to long with no steering axis on their trailers
Thank you!
@@arjan2713what? That’s a dumb comment
@@StockTurboN20 That video proves his point, though. Since the truck here clearly goes past the stop line, either the truck driver has picked a route not suited for a vehicle of this lenght and manouverability, or he picked the wrong point to start his turn. A European Cab-Over design would be much easier to handle in this situation.
@@jhdix6731a lot of roads in Europe aren't this large anyway, so your point is kind of moot.
As a 39 year veteran trucker this is the first time I've seen this. Should be common practice at tight intersections.
Never have seen a stop line around here. I usually hug the right side of street to give them room.
That's a small town, I've seen those all over the country but many areas are do not
The town I grew up in had this
They've been there, you've just never seen one because the driver ignored it and pulled all the way up to the intersection anyway.
More to the point, if you see a semi tractor trailer trying to pull into a turn, you might need to ‘back up’ in order to allow him (or her?) to ‘complete the turn’…
More than once I have been approaching an intersection and seen a big vehicle trying to turn. I will stop some distance back to allow them an easier, wider turn.
People often do that so ues
Tell that to those entitled ones that refuse to move cause they got there first 😂😂
If Im within my limit line, I am not backing anywhere. At that point, it becomes your fault for improper turn.
@@samkdaily3055 smdh pathetic
Great demo and shows clearly why this is needed!
If you drive in Baltimore City they have no common courtesy they don't care about truck drivers they don't care about nobody it's all about them they got to do 80 to the next red light people don't realize they have stop signs and red lights to control the traffic so there's not traffic jams so don't race to the next red light or blow through the red light it is there for a reason to control traffic so it's even flow people don't have common sense they're dumb
Forward of that is commonly referred to as The A**hole Zone.
It's for trucks, busses, delivery trucks, and even emergency vehicles (especially in high-speed pursuits or life or death situations).
Sadly, we have a LOT of truly ignorant people.
This video should be a part of the mandatory defensive driving course. It doesn't take much to make this part of the basic driving skill set. The cost for prevention is often far less than correction. In driving, the cost of accidents could be life.
👍
I've already had a cop wrangle 7 cars back because the lead car pulled passed the stop line and my trailer couldn't clear his bumper if I would have finished the turn.
In my case, I was making a left turn, and my tandems never touched the opposing stop line. Had he stopped where he was required to, I would've easily made the turn.
High Speed pursuits?
Yes, but they are a**holes for a reason. A lot of the time they won't care either way. Yes, it is sad but true.Signed-Richard.
RULE OF THUMB; RESPECT THE LINES!!
Unless you're a trucker, apparently.😂
What's that supposed to mean?@@bryaniskoo
@@joshlia6469 he didn't stay in the lines.
@@bryaniskoo That's literally why the stop line is set so far back; it's for the truckers to be able to turn properly... what do you want the truck driver to do? Slam the trailer into the building?

Happens all the time then you get that dumb look from the 4 wheeler as they try to back up.

One of a very long list of dumb things 4 wheelers do.
Rule of thumb when driving trucks: the dumber people are around me, the slower I go. They aren’t the ones that will lose their job or fill out an accident report

Most ppl/drivers don’t give truckers the respect they deserve.

Truck driver knows what he’s doing!!!
We have these also in England... And i drive a 40 foot long bus.. But then you get idiots in TAXIS going way over that line and then they wonder why the bus cannot get round.. They do this as do most car drivers, because they're shot sighted in mind and THICK.
GOD BLESS THE TRUCKERS!!👍👍😁❤️🇺🇸
You didn't say that during covid, why now?
I bet your sleeping with one
As a trucker. Thank you
TYSM😊
My grandpa was a trucker and he told me stories with this. A few times cops forced any car back behind the line and gave them a ticket. DTAY BEHIND THE LINE, ITS GOTTA BE TAUGHT IN THE DRIVETS TEST.
My town has one but the sensor for the light is up with the other stop bars.
So if you stop behind the line at night when there isn’t slowly of traffic the light will not change for you. I sat there 35 minuets the first time and after I learned i decided to try to wait it out to see what would happen. I was young and had nowhere to be. An hour later it never changed. This was at 2 am an no car came behind me or on a lane that would have caused my light to change with theirs
So there is that. Good intersection design. Terrible execution. It’s still the same way and it’s infamous. Locals know. The hundreds of thousands of tourists we get every year don’t.
And even if there isn’t one, you still know you’re in a good town when all 6 cars unanimously decide to backup and give you room to turn.
I've had to FORCE cars BACKWARDS because they've gone over the Solid Whithe line.Other cars in the right hand lane, have had to make room for the idiot driver who Thought they Had the Right To be over that line.
Hard to fix stupid!
I just had this conversation. Did I not? You always have that one? Bimbo goes over the line and not to mention that's not ignore the ones that are behind the truck. Who knows and has to go into the left lane to make the right hand swing to clear that little white line. And where are they at all in the f****** way? And like I say eat truck. I'll tell you if you can find out we're common sense is buried. I'll send flowers
I've done it myself many times in my bus driving career
Excellent training video for all of the PUBLIC who does not understand trucking.
If you don't know you shouldn't be on the road
Please! U have no clue what most laws are on the road.
It's about time !!! Thank you. Social media should be a learning tool
Finally somebody's educating the public what these lines are actually meant for. I drive for a living I've had so many standoffs with people going way over the white line trying to make a turn
Truck driver here. Thank you to all those that steer clear and let us complete our turn uninterrupted.
I also noticed mother with the child go on front off the truck not paying attention how truck was turning and question is why?
This is shot in Watkins Glen, NY. Pedestrians get the right of way in a cross walk. The pedestrians have a walk signal given to them at the start of the green light cycle. Therefore the truck needs to yield for the pedestrians in the crosswalk.
@@kbaker96yes.you are correct but in this situation arrow is only for 15 to 20 seconds for pedestrians walking by after that resume to green lights for the right lane and straight. I assume her signal was already over because the truck was halfway on the street turn but still waiting for her to get off from a street. I have always had a similar situation with pedestrians. Most pedestrians disobey the rules. I was driving a Double trailer for 27 years and believe me or not that just normal people don't follow rules. You have to have eyes around your head.
@@urszulapanikowski6944 I live in this town. The light is green and walk signal is on at the same time. By the time the walk signal counts down the signal turns red to go to the next cycle.
Very good street layout.
What a lot of folks don't realize is, if you cross that stop marker, you can be ticketed for failure to stop at the intersection. Officers generally don't write these because it's pretty picky, but blocking another vehicle's turn might just net a ticket.
That lady with the stroller also needs an lesson or two on possisioning, dead corner in the mirror of a truck. And situational awareness
You can’t enter the crosswalk when it’s occupied… and I’m a trucker 🤷🏽♂️
But what u cant see u cant know. What if doesnt help u much when ur getting smeared out over the asfalt by the rearwheels. @@ShowSheezy26
Beautiful job truck driver. I remember in Jersey having to make everyone in that lane back up. 😮
40 yrs ago a Boston cop guided a truck over 2 cars parked illegally. After being totaled, cop had them towed
Thanks for this. There are far too many drivers that are oblivious and incapable of deductive reasoning.
I’ve seen something like this in NJ where I grew up. I solely figured out the reason why the white line on the left lane is far back than the right lane. It’s because large vehicles need a lot of space and precision to make a sharp turn with caution without hitting the cars and to avoid cutting corner.

Nice job driver, Well and good job to the dude in the SUV for staying behind the A**h*le Zone line........
I thought all drivers know that when you see that line at traffic lights, that you should stop behind it when the light is red. I know all is not aware that trucks with trailers need it, but I just thought that it was mandatory to stop behind it on red lights.
I drive in the city mostly nowadays I see people stop in the crosswalk alll the time.
Thank you for this great information.
Thanks for posting this. ❤
I love when intersections are like this, makes our job just a little bit less stressful lol just a little bit anyway 😄
I always stay back just in case. Truckers appreciate it
It'll probably surprise you to know the number of times I've turned onto intersections like that to find someone "wayyyy" past that line. It's almost daily 😆 🤣 😂 😹
Also know that the traffic laws of every state make clear that once a truck driver enters an intersection to make a turn, they own that intersection for as long as it takes for them to complete their turn. No other vehicle, not even emergency vehicles, are allowed to interfere with them while they are making their turn.
Doesn't mean that people still don't try to, and what wonderf*ck messes THOSE turn into!
You're correct about everything except emergency vehicles. They always have the right of way.
The size of your vehicle doesn't dictate right of way and you never have the right to intentionally strike or hit somebody else
Need more of these type of videos to hopefully educate the general driving public of the needs and dangers of being around big rigs. Maneuvers, blowouts, blind spots just to name a few.
I wish other cities would adopt this very helpful set back stop line at the intersection it's a pain in the ass trying to make a turn without it
We need this at our major intersection! Trucks can't make their turn. I've seen them almost wipe out a fire hydrant!
I always stay back for semi trucks when I see they are coming my way. It’s always nice to see the driver wave as to say thank you.
Respect for truck drivers.
People should give preference to trucks and truck drivers, I try my best whenever I can.
In the UK we have red on the road on roundabouts and some lanes to warn that some vehicles need the extra room
Great truck driver
That's the snowman. East bound and down. Love that truck.❤
A lot of people need to see this.
I see people creeping up on trucks and buses in roundabouts too. That's a great way to get squeezed, lol.
This needs to go viral
there's a good example of this where I live. it's fantastic
Thank you for this. People should be better educated about driving around trucks. They don't teach this anymore.
Also as a driver especially back east I'd pull over coming into a town where I was delivering and slide my tandems as far forward as possible to enable me to maneuver tight intersecions better.
Can you tell me why don't they use steering axis on trailers in north America?
Also buses too, especially articulated ones. I used to live really close to an intersection like this and once in a while I got a good chuckle about some dummy being over the line.
It’s great fun as I take a wide turn and see the look 👀 on people’s faces as my trailer swings towards their car, instantly making them think 🤔 and possibly shit 💩 themselves 😂😂
I'll keep that in mind if I ever start driving.
We need more of this place. 🙏
I turned there just like that regularly from 2007 to 2018.
I know what that line is for I was taught that driver said back in the 70s. But tell that to billions of others especially here in Mil,Wi where that big line means move up to the crosswalk more so you're blocking the crosswalk !
A lot of people go over the white line or inch closer to the middle of the intersection 🤣
My dad was a driver. I've known don't matter what direction they're coming from, they need extra room.
I always stop back from intersection, if see a truck trying to make turn in my direction.
Knew that before old enough to drive. 😊
I'm backing my travel trailer between goal posts like this!
So I've seen lines like that but never knew the reason behind it. Fascinating!
Hey, I recognize that town! Watkins Glen, NY. There's a salt mine back the other way from that intersection (behind camera POV) where a lot of truck traffic runs to and from. However, NY-414 and NY-79 is also a major truck route through the Finger Lakes region. So this intersection being designed as trucker friendly was a necessity.
Australian road authorities.. take note!
Great idea 👍🏼
It has been my safety job since 2000.
We bring everything for American needs.
Looks like that town cares about truckers💯 I wish more towns and cities did also🇺🇸
They should add this everywhere
I've never seen an intersection like this in Italy. Transit of large vehicles on city roads like this is generally forbidden, if there are no other routes city police or workers in a safety car will usually intervene to rule traffic.
As a truck driver thank you to the people that pay attention
And even in other situations, where it's not obviously drawn out on the floor, you can adapt to the situation, giving the trucker an easier, and faster way through.
Most people stop at the outermost pedestrian crossing line.
Another way to put it is, "The stop line is the STOP LINE" either you stop at it or you've technically run the light/entered the intersection. I see people pass the line with their entire car before coming to a stop, unfortunately they don't realize they stopped after the line for no reason - the ticket is the same whether they stopped like they did or just kept on going without stopping at all.
I use to be a trucker and a lot of people ignore the marking making other cars back up.
I've had to sit thru multiple green lights until a driver finally stopped at the line so i could turn on my green last time i encountered this type of turn.
Tell that woman to hurry the hell up with that stroller 😂
Got one just a couple of miles away. If you pull forward of the white line, trucks have no space to turn. Also, the light won't change from red to green, so you'll be there for quite a while.
We got one of those here, but people like to go up to practically the light sometimes even when not turning right.
When I get there with the truck (because it can be hard to see someone if their up too far but not all the way), sometimes I have to like park there and wait for them to figure it out. Can't give them too much room or I'd be stopped on tracks, not backing up on a busy road when I can't see behind me.
Definitely not in Australia, no thinking like that here.
It was probably made that way for buses. Any aid to trucks is just a bonus. Take care.
lol I remember seeing one of these for the first time in NYC. I was wondering why it was so far, then a truck turned in front of me for a quick answer.
People in my town haven't a clue as to what a stop line is. They usually stop completely past the line.
There are so many drivers that I have observed that go beyond that stop line in the town that I live in.
We got this as well in London. But some people don't know how to switch on their brain when they decide it was a good idea to stop way beyond the line at the red lights until they see both buses and truck turning round the bend 🤷
As a trucker i can confirm that most people don’t stop on the stop line
What this also needs is a sign explaining that stopping past the line is not going to make the light change faster.
I’m wish all small streets were set up like this. It would save a whole lot of time and accidents
As a truck driver myself I wish people used them correctly for once.
Californians would ignore the trucker then cuss him out.
Den kall & komplain 2 da kompanay on da traila
and the driver of the semi still goes past his legally marked passage area...
They also have stop bars before crosswalks and some people don't get that either.
I was taught this in Driver's Ed, to always stop behind the solid white painted line for these reasons... Always expect incoming traffic to be that of a semi truck or a passenger bus that needs to make wide turns. I don't understand why drivers can't be re taught this simple driving rule every time they renew their license so they are familiar with this line and never park after it blocking the right of way.
It’s insane how many people go past the white stop line. Smh. And GOD FORBID you don’t pull ALLLLLL the way up people look at you like you’re crazy for leaving 3 feet of space at big intersections.
My anxiety going up watching that stroller on the truck blind spot
Good turn driver.43yrs no accidents am retired now 😅😅😅
Ive never seen a single person stop behind the white line in my entire life.
Good job driver...a professional turn...most 4-wheelers don't stop behind the thick line to honest
We have the same near my house in Oakville, ON, Canada as the intersection is on a bus (& school bus) routes.
yup let's put the line back for trucks and trailers since their only 48'
