  • Movies take a long time to make but in some cases, even after decades of work, some of them still can't get made. In this video, we take a look at the movies that get stuck in development and those that get some money - tens, and in some cases, hundreds of millions of dollars - put into them but never see the light of day. Welcome to Development & Production Hell.

      Maybe if it was Denis Villeneuve or Christopher Nolan directing, but NOT Waititi. He literally does not make any sense for an Akira adaptation.

      @@robertolanderos5308 I think Villeneuve would be the best choice. After Dune, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049, I think virtually any sci-fi/sci-fi tangential property would be safe in his hands.

    Akira - Live Action Dialogue - If Done by Waititi
    Kaneda: "Hey! Tetsuooooo over here!"
    Tetsuo: "What in Neo-Tokyo are you doing, KANEDAAAAA!?"
    Kaneda: "Remember this dance we used to do as kids?" *Does Orange Justice Dance*
    Tetsuo: "Think you can out dance me?"
    Kaneda: "Spot light's on you, pal." *Satellite shoots Tetsuo.*

    I really hate these studios that are afraid of making R rated movies. They are effectively knee-capping the director's creative talents all so they can get a wider audience and larger profits instead of actually having faith in names like del Toro to pull in that larger audience despite the R rating.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Před 6 dny +2

      Especially odd considering the trend of R movies doing well - Logan, Oppenheimer, Deadpool, etc. There's a larger market than they realize. They just need to make the budgets a bit smaller.

    An older example is the unfinished 1937 film adaption of Robert Grave’s’ historical novel ‘l, Claudius’ produced by Alexander Korda, directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Charles Laughton. The production was plagued by difficulties culminating in a car accident in London that badly injured female lead Merle Oberon. Another problem was the disagreements between Korda and headstrong actor Laughton. The production had cost UK studio London Films the equivalent of about 50 million US by the time it was abandoned.

    I heard(unfortunately don't remember where) that the reason we never got a WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT sequel was that Disney and Amblin/Spielberg were in disagreement for years on which company owned Roger Rabbit. When that got cleared up, both sides figured licensing all the different characters would be prohibitively expensive.

  • @oneinathousand2156

    The only reason to make another Akira is to adapt the parts of the manga that weren’t in the anime, which is what Taika has said he wants to do, but I’m sure if Katsuhiro Otomo wanted that to happen, he would be fully capable of doing that himself.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Před 7 dny +3

      Which leads one to think that perhaps a movie isn't the best way to go if an adaptation must be made. A TV series might work better. The recent development also, for some reason, seems to be multi-part movies (The Strangers, Horizon, Rebel Moon, Wicked). I really hope that doesn't end up being the case, as it's more or less been a recipe for bloat.

    Great video, but I have a complaint: when you mention a person, could you put their name on the screen, because I often can't understand the person's name just by you speaking. One example is 4:18 in the video.

    Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi was the least of Ghost in the Shell [Hollywood] problems.
    The original character is a brain in a box that changes body with upsetting (to her own sense of self) regularity, so a western face is no biggy.
    But the character in the movie has maybe 1/8th of the agency that the manga one has, the movie script ignore most if not all of the philosophical implications of AI and cybernetics explored by Mamoru Oshii in the animated movie and the Hollywood script probably has gotten Kenji Kamiyama and the rest of the "Stand Alone Complex" anime serie staff to laugh their ass off at its formulaic plot...

    I don't believe that anyone is asking Guillermo Del Toro to make In The Mouth of Madness a love story.
    For one it makes no sense and more importantly Hollywood has been absolutely allergic to love stories for over a decade now. I think the last one I remember seeing is Cold Mountain. Whatever the reason for it being in production Hell it ain't someone pushing for a love story. It's probably solely based on budgeting

    • @MrDarcyProductions
      @MrDarcyProductions Před 15 dny

      @@jamespohl-md2eq not joking at all, almost all relationships in movies and tv now are strictly platonic and lacking in sexual tension and there are very few exceptions, even fewer where it ends with the couple staying together. Instead of a kiss you get foreheads pressed together. Usually ends in breakups or death. Outside of romantic comedies there is basically no romance and they don't make movies like the mummy anymore either. Perfect example of you being wrong. Brendan Fraser forces a kiss in the first one.
