Because especially around this time, Sanya was basically undefeated in all of the 400m races she ran throughout the season. She was consistently under 50 seconds , and I’m pretty sure she still has the records for most sub 50 times. She ran the 48.70 American record around this time too. There were several races where she beat these same women by meters. So she really was the favorite going into the race.
But Christine was always a beast !

Sub 50 or 49 doesn’t matter unless it’s executed on the D-day when it actually matters. I love SRR too, but the outcome was predictable. Either Christine or Sanya could have won, and it wouldn’t have been an upset either way.

This race was an exact replica of the 2005 world championship final in Helsinki Sanya Richards-Ross didn't learn the lessons from that race, she went out far too quickly, ran out of gas in the last 50m and got overhauled by Tonique Williams-Darling who completed the Olympic/World title double. Here she did the same tactics went out too quickly over the first 300m she blasted past and paid for it in the home straight. Ohorougu was more evenly paced in comparison she entered the home straight in around about 4th behind Richards-Ross and 2 of the 3 Russians in this race Gashina and Ferova but due to running an even paced race she had more gas in the tank in the last 100m and overhauled the lot to replicate Williams-Darling's Olympic/World title double. To make things worse for Richards-Ross she didn't get the silver due to Shericka Williams who also ran an evenly paced race albeit she was further behind going into the home straight she was about 6th behind all 3 Russians blitzed the last 100m and took the silver.

на Олимпийских Играх в Афинах 2004 года, было тоже самое, не одного представителя из сборной USA не оказалось на пьедестале почёта после завершения забега на дистанции 400 метров у Женщин.
