  • Welcome to the World Athletics Watch Party, join the conversation on Twitter with our hashtag #WatchWorldAthletics.
Salwa Eid Naser unleashed a performance which rocked the athletics world by striking gold with the third-fastest 400m time in history.
Competing in front of a passionate crowd inside the Khalifa International Stadium, the diminutive Bahraini dominated from the outset to stop the clock in a dazzling time of 48.14 - the fastest time in the world for 34 years.
The pre-event favourite and Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo tried to close down Naser, who held a gargantuan lead heading into the home straight, but could not come within striking distance. The Bahamian herself climbed to sixth on the world all-time list with an NACAC area record time of 48.37.

But Naser hasn't the optimal physique to do this. Only a tall, lean and powefull women could run so fast (like Miller Uibo is).

@@Leonidas-eu9bb Incorrect. Most of the women who have run faster then Miller Uibo are/were shorter and stockier than her. And this is the 400m so it's a little less about pure speed and more about holding speed and re-accelerating the most efficiently that will produce success. Of course pure speed helps but it must be used properly to be effective or you end up looking like Tyson Gay when he ran a 44 sec 400m back in the day (started faster than anyone else in a 400m ever then faded badly the last 80m but held on for the win and a new PB).

That *so-called* world record from 36 years ago *may* never be beaten: these athletes today are the absolute highest performing athletes in their field and yet after all these years of improvements in diet, equipment, training techniques and schedules, they're still not making a dent in the un-credible time set back in '85. Notice how the commentator is making a point of NOT naming the *so-called* world record holder and he used the term *the modern era* to distinguish it from the complete mess of the 1980s.

Completely agree. I despise records like Koch’s and Kratochvílová’s that are still *technically* the world record. The early to mid 80s records are such a farce and it upsets me to no end that the records haven’t been reset. I think 1988 would be a good year, since that’s the year random mandatory drug testing was introduced
On an even less positive note, I’m very suspicious about Naser’s time. An improvement of 0.94 seconds in a single year? Followed by a 2 year ban for missing three whereabouts drug tests? It’s very suspicious and extremely saddening because Naser seemingly had so much potential

I lack the words to describe the ecstasy a runner feels when they experience their second and third winds. The runners high. That feeling has got to outweigh the pain that comes after. It takes a lot of training, dedication, and experience to be able to continue to produce fast times. That's where Salwa excels. She knows her body and what it can do.
I believe Miller-Uibo also knows this, that's why she trains for the sprint to the finish. This makes her the fastest runner, but the question is can she run at pace over the full 400 meters. I don't believe she can, because she has a tendency to tighten up near the end of her races.

Miller-Uibo ha demostrado evolución de forma progresiva tanto en los 400 como en los 200 metros y no de forma tan abrupta como la ganadora de este campeonato, que bajó casi 1 segundo a su mejor tiempo de 49.07s.
