    Mashallah willkommen to Islam Sister,
Is he who was dead, then We gave him life, and made for him a light by which he walks among the people, like he who is in total darkness, and cannot get out of it? Thus the doings of disbelievers are made to appear good to them.
Religion with Allah is Islam. Those to whom the Scripture was given differed only after knowledge came to them, out of envy among themselves. Whoever rejects the signs of Allah-Allah is quick to take account.

The Return of Brother Carl (Muslim Revert) to His Creator
    إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ
"Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return”
On Sun 14/03/21, Brother Carl (a Muslim Revert) was buried at Southern Cemetery, Manchester. He took his Shahadah (Islamic declaration of faith) only a few months before. Carl had cancer; his chemotherapy was stopped in Nov 2020 as it had become ineffective.
Whilst waiting for his bloods to be taken at hospital, Carl overheard a conversation between another Non-Muslim patient and the Muslim Phlebotomist (person who takes blood samples) about Islam which drew his attention. When Carl's turn came for his bloods, his own personal discovery of Islam unfolded through the inquisitive questions he had. Conversations continued over the coming weeks between these 2 strangers whenever their paths crossed; ultimately leading to Carl taking his Shahadah - Alhamdulillah.
In Mid-Jan 2021, we (MMBT - Manchester Muslims Burial Trust) received a call from a brother informing us his friend (the Phlebotomist) had been asked by a dying Muslim patient (Carl) to help plan his funeral arrangements and if we could assist - we obliged as this was our job. Our introduction to Carl was through text messages. Conversations were grim as they involved talking Carl through how his funeral would be conducted in accordance to Islamic rites. Carl informed us his family were Non-Muslim, so we advised him he should complete a 'Statutory Declaration' asap so they were aware of his wish for an Islamic funeral.
We felt compelled to support Carl whilst he was still alive, rather than wait until he had passed away. We spoke to a local scholar about this and he gave us a Du’a Cube (a small electronic device that plays various supplications from the Holy Qur'an) and a Spiritual Care Pack to give to Carl. The pack contained Zamzam Water, Ajwa Dates, Honey, Blackseed Oil, Tasbeeh (Prayer Beads) and various Du’a Books. May Allah SWT reward them both immensely.
Our first meeting with Carl was a few nights later to drop off these items on a cold, bitter night. He was waiting eagerly for us outside his home in a dark lit street; a lone figure in a bathrobe, shivering and breathing heavily - signs of someone who really was not well. His first words were "are you arranging the Muslim burial for me when I die?" Words said with such conviction, someone who knew they did not have long to live. We parted soon after. A follow up text message was sent to Carl few weeks later to see how he was doing but there was no response. This was the last time we spoke to Carl.
On Tue 09/03/21, we received a call that Carl's health had deteriorated. This was from Luke (Carl's son) who by chance had stumbled across our text messages whilst browsing through his father's phone. Carl had been in a hospice for over a month.
Luke was aware of his father’s reversion and that Carl had printed out the 'Statutory Declaration' but he never got around to completing this due to his illness worsening. Despite this, Luke was supportive of carrying out his father's wish for an Islamic funeral after he was to pass away. Luke relayed an incident when he visited his father during his illness. There was a towel on the floor and he assumed his father had not cleaned up after showering but realised it was laid out in a particular direction and Carl was using this as a musallah (prayer mat) for praying.
We wanted to visit Carl but this was not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions. However the hospice arranged for a local Imam to visit Carl. Luke said despite his father not being fully conscious, he felt the presence of the Imam and the prayers recited made Carl feel peace.
On Sat 13/03/21 evening, we received the sad new of Carl’s passing. We spoke to Luke about the importance of getting the burial completed asap but deep-down knew a burial the following day would be near impossible due to various factors (i.e. late weekend death, process for certification/ registration not being completed yet, dealing with authorities we were not familiar with due to this being an out of Manchester death and that many Non-Muslim family members who wanted to attend the burial were scattered across various areas including Wales.
The events that unfolded thereafter can only be described as a Miracle of Allah SWT as our Lord reminds us that *"Allah is the Best of Planners" (Qur'an - **8:30**).* We were surprised to hear the Hospice GP had completed the MCCD (Medical Certificate of Cause of Death) as soon as Carl passed away, this had been emailed to the registrar already. An hour or so later (through a contact of a contact of a contact) we got hold of the on-call registrar who confirmed they had received the MCCD and provided assurances the burial order (AKA “The Green”) would be issued in the morning. A next day burial was now possible and Luke was able to confirm attendance of most of his Non-Muslim Family Members & Friends at short notice.
From our experience of complex/ logistically challenging funerals, we have encountered Allah SWT removing obstacles with consummate ease and opening doors for His deceased servant to return to Him as quickly as possible without delay - this was one of those occasions. We feel this is an indication of how much Allah SWT loves a person and we believe Allah SWT loved Carl dearly.
Carl was a man who had accepted his fate (he was dying) and submitted his free will to Allah SWT by leaping into the unknown and following his fitrah (natural inclination) that accepting Islam was the right thing to do. When faced with the certainty of death, even the most ardent and strong-willed will flinch at the thought of leaving this world and their loved ones behind but none of this fazed Carl. When taking his Shahadah, Carl said "I am ready to meet My Creator". Carl was keen to learn everything about Islam in the short time he had so he could practice his newfound faith before he died - this was a man rushing towards the Mercy of Allah SWT without fear.
The second time we met Carl was when collecting him from the hospice the following morning. The hospice was located in a rural town where you could sense not many Muslims lived. A visit from a Muslim Funeral Director at the hospice did not happen often. However, Allah SWT’s Mercy is encompassing and it was always there with Carl at the hospice. Carl looked like he was taking a nap and there was a feeling of peace and serenity in the air around him. Through his prolonged illness, Carl had also grown a beard - Masha'Allah.
The washing (ghusl) and kafn (shrouding) of Carl took place at Jame’ah Masjid-E-Noor (Old Trafford) which is close to where MMBT are based. The masjid was very kind in waiving the cost of ghusl/ kafn and accommodating Carl’s Non-Muslim Family & Friends for the viewing - May Allah SWT reward the masjid immensely.
The only family member who could not attend was Carl’s youngest son who was living with foster parents. However, they had asked their Muslim neighbours to attend in their absence. As is it turned out the neighbours were actually related to one of our volunteers so there was some comfort in them knowing the burial was conducted by someone they knew. Only Allah SWT can script things the way He does with His Divine Pen.
At the viewing, one of the Non-Muslim attendees commented he could see why Carl had accepted Islam by the dignified manner of how things were conducted. Some of them found it puzzling when they were thanked for allowing us to make funeral arrangements. One attendee joked that he will tell his wife (when he gets home) that he wants a Muslim burial when he dies. After the viewing, Carl was transferred to the private ambulance for the journey to the cemetery.
It was raining most of the day; the rain continued when we arrived. Whilst the rain was constant it did not feel heavy that it troubled the attendees. It is said that du'a made at the time of rain is readily accepted. The rain was a reminder of Allah SWT's Mercy that without it life simply cannot exist and from the planting of the deceased in the earth we will be all one day be resurrected again.
After the Janazah Salah (Funeral Prayer), Carl was laid to rest in the grave as per his wish; without a coffin - just in his shroud (kafn) as recommended by our deen. The fortunate people who last handled Carl and lowered him into grave were 2 of Luke’s Muslim work colleagues and another brother - the Muslim Phlebotomist through whom Carl’s journey to Islam started and ended in this world.
Carl’s story is an apt reminder that no matter what trials, tribulations and challenges we may go through, we must always have good hope in Allah SWT. Our Lord reminds us in a Hadith that *“I am as My servant thinks of Me”.* Sometimes it may feel like your prayers are going unanswered but know with certainty that Allah SWT never rejects a sincere prayer. If you are not seeing the fruits of it then have Tawakkul (Trust and Reliance in Allah) that He is planning something better than what you have asked for or even diverting a calamity from heading your way.
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided” - Surah Al Baqarah (2:186).
May Allah SWT let us never feel abandoned and safeguard our imaan. May He bring us safely to the Blessed Ramadhan and make it a means of us getting close to Him. Ameen.
