The Mammut Cargon Duffel was awarded the Editor's Choice Award for its well thought out features, and quality. We liked the quick disconnect backpack straps with their own external storage pocket, fabric, and attention to detail. While not the most water resistant of the duffel bags tested, this is the best duffel bag for travel.

The 2014 versions of the Mammut Cargon bag have quick release buckles for the backpack straps and a pocket to tuck them in. The 2818 versions do not. The 2014 versions have 2 pockets on each end of the bag, the 2018 versions have one. The 2014 versions have convenient carry handles on the top of the bag in addition to the backpack straps on the top of the bag. The 2018 versions only have the backpack straps on the bags top which can be joined together by a Velcro wrap to create a handle. I have the 2018 bag which is a nice bag but the older model seems like a much better bag to me.

VERY HELPFUL comments. I was going to go with this bag because of the backstrap features. Was so taken with this feature that I was going to spend full retail for the Cargon over a set of $90 Black Holes! Saved me the disappointment.

how does the patagonia black hole bag handle the top of the straps, as the bottom is clips but not 'garaged' ?

Nice Review. I purchased this bag because of some of the features you mentioned here, including the removable shoulder straps. I was a bit surprised when it showed up and the straps were not removable, and it only had 1 side pocket. I purchased the 90L model, so I'm not sure if the features you mention are only included on a particular model or what, but they are not available on the 90L model. I am still waiting for an answer from Mammut on this. Otherwise, great bag.

As a follow-up to my original comment, I've talked to Mammut (Kudos on the great customer service!) and confirmed that the new bags do NOT come with the removable shoulder straps via a buckle. This was changed due to some zipper issues with that configuration. The shoulder straps are now removed by unlacing the straps, similar to what you would do with other bags. Still a great bag, but do not buy this bag if that is the ONLY reason for buying it.

Michael Hull Did not read down, simply watched the review, choosing to buy because of stress on the superior strap system, even spending $20 more for my 60L than the same size Patagonia Blackhole which does have a buckle release at the bottom for the straps. So even if the top of the strap had zipper issues they cheaped out the bottom unnecessarily.

Three years later and I just did the same thing. Just purchased the bag over the Patagonia Black Hole because of the strap demo here. Just received my 110L and no strap buckles at all. No strap storage. None of the reasons I purchased the bag are there anymore. I guess there is a reason to read CZcams comments. Never thought I would say that. :-)

I too was going to purchase this over the Black Hole for the clip release and second pocket, until of course I discovered that the current model does not have those features.
Get with the program Mammut, I'll check back next season to see if you've "improved" the design back to the way it was. Until then, Black Hole it is.

The mammut duffle is very nice but the limited availability in colors and availability period is not good so even though I like that brand I'll probably go with a different brand because I really don't like the color selection.

4 Minutes of blabla and only two features shown. The removable straps and the opening of the main compartement....very useful...:-(

Mammut has since downgraded their bag. No quick release and they ditched a pocket.

Good to know, thanks! These two features would have made me choose the Mammut over the North Face Base Camp. But as it is now: Nope.
