This Chicken Shawarma and Homemade Naan Bread was BETTER than our Local Restaurant!

- This homemade chicken shawarma on the griddle is one of our favorite griddle recipes that we’ve made recently! With a simple homemade yogurt sauce and made-from-scratch griddle naan bread, these chicken shawarma wraps were absolutely delicious, and they tasted exactly like the shawarma that we get from our favorite local restaurant!
Yes, we made homemade naan bread. Yes, we made our own yogurt sauce. And yes, we made a homemade chicken shawarma marinade… and this chicken shawarma recipe was still done in under 2 hours (not including the time to marinate the chicken thighs)!
If you’re looking for creative and flavor-packed recipes for the griddle or flat top grill, you’ve got to try this griddle chicken recipe!

All, with or without a poolish (simply use the 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup of flour -- leaving 1-3/4 cups for the finishing of the dough and a 1/32nd of a tsp of yeast -- mixing it together and resting it overnight - then use the poolish and follow the recipe as directed, but don't add any more yeast). This Naan recipe is amazing! I just finished cooking 8 of them (now I wish I had doubled the recipe haha!) and they are AMAZING! Very nice work Neal and Amy :) I think this is one of my most favorite recipes you have presented, and it's excellent!
Cheers bud....
Amy's reactions are priceless.
2:40 - As a retired Army Engineer, I get the "flour in the hole" reference. We'd have to call that out when using the latrines because it would change the shower temps extremely, giving the other Soldiers a chance to back up from the water from the shower head. Great memories you just brought up!!
hahhahahah funny how simple things in life quickly back flash memories
i think this is one of my favorite videos they've done, it's different - not breakfast, etc. Love it
Glad you enjoyed it!
That looks really good Neal. I will be trying this except for maybe the pickles and fries. When I was over in Jordan, I ate Shawarma's almost daily and none of them had pickles.
I believe it's the Lebanese shawarma that comes with pickles. I had some from a shawarma place recently and it was really good. The pickles are different from the US varieties.
@@dorkistry Thank you for that information. I might have to look and see where I can get some Lebanese pickles.
They don’t use pickles in the shawarma places in Canada either.
Definitely amazing job Neal and Amy! This looks so good!! Great cook as always, cheers brother 🍻
Mmmmmmmm, That looked absolutely delicious. Keep those videos and recipes coming. Stay safe in East TN.
That is going on my menu for sure!
Dude another banger! I love all foods Middle Eastern, and this looks incredible! Not traditional, but I use pickled red onion as well in dishes like this. I've also started playing around with sumac. That flavor profile would work well in a dish like this. You should definitely play around with it, great citrus notes. Awesome as always sir!
This is such a killer cook!
Absolutely spectacular guys .... thank you
Hey thanks Joe
Can't wait to make this. As with all of your recipes the way you explain how and why makes it easy to follow. Great teacher
TY
Looks fantastic and easy to make. I'm putting this on my list of things to make.
Hope you enjoy...one thing for sure..we loved it...
This looks amazing. Great video ❤❤
Thank you so much
That looks fantastic! Great job on the naan👍😊
Thanks Bobbi....have to find other things to make with it...pizza, cheesesteaks...etc
I usualy do mine on my ceramic grill but I will have to try it on my griddle. I tried a bread recipe that was 50 50 self rising flour and greek yogurt and it was not bad.
Hope you enjoy
That was awesome Neil and Amy, looked so good and according to your taste testers it sounded good too. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Glad you enjoyed it
Glad you did the naan on a video, that’s my favorite bread now.
Absolutely...our too...maybe a naan cheesesteak...ahahhaa
Loveeeeeeeee naan bread. I’m gonna try this. Thanks!!
Hope you enjoy
That does look very delicious. In central wisconsin they really don't have anything like that available locally. I'm definitely going to try to make this sometime soon! Awesome job!
Oh wow!!! I gotta try that Naan bread on my Blackstone. That looks amazing!! Well done!!!!!!👍
You should! Its insanely easy and good,,,,
Beyond amazing dude!!! I'm making that this weekend, I'm so excited!!! Naan looked perfect and that chicken was 🔥🔥🔥🔥Outstanding!!!
Yes sir....thanks bud
Will be in my index of recipes
That naan is so dang good...I want to make the naan just for pizza dough....
@The Flat Top King I made Homemade Naan and Chicken Shawarma for dinner last night, big hit. I did try something; I grilled the chicken on the gas grill. Love every recipe I have tried of yours. Thanks for this great channel.
Absolutely...complicated understand..thats what cooking is all about...cheers
Nice!
Awesome
Loving it like usual. The chicken really does look fantastic, the Naan too (can you try one that is low carb?), and the sauce as well. Super nice job!
Absolutely...thats what Amy actually bought us...low carb naan
Never had that before but now I definitely will. That looks amazing!!
You should....maybe a cajun twist,...roast beef po boy...heck fried shrimp would absolutely work...
@@TheFlatTopKing yes sirrrrr!!
That Naan bread came out looking great!
Thanks bud...
looks amazing... just added Naan to my to-learn list... It's cool to know you are a CIA grad.... Now I know why you are so good at what you do! I have never been to culinary school but I have a copy of "The Professional Chef" on my shelf... its a great reference for me... cheers brother!
Just to clarify...I was accepted...in the 4 year Baking and Pastry program....I ended up having to pull out before I started because it was so expensive...I could not get enough scholarships and GI bill...Funny thing is I was told my good ol government that it was no their fault I choose such an experience college and told me to go to a cheaper 2 year college...thats the truth...
@@TheFlatTopKing well that sucks! Your cooking skills are definitely beyond average so keep up the great work :)
Shawarma is amazing!!!!
Really enjoyed it...
FTK, Nice video looks amazing, definitely on the short list. Great to see you using the Halo. Bought one a few weeks ago to replace first Gen blackstone and absolutely love it.
Peace Luke T
Hope you enjoy it!
Looks amazing. I want to give this a try but put the thighs on my spit. Keep everything else the same. Thanks so much for sharing. Love it.
Hope you enjoy
OHHH maybe add that yogurt as well to the chicken marinade...especially going the pit route...
Great job on the naan. You could use that recipe for any breakfast roll up - just an idea
Absolutely you could..
Nice! An Indian friend of mine keeps Naan dough in the fridge at all times. She just pinches off a hunk, rolls it out and cooks in on a flat griddle, stove top. It is served with every meal. It is an art. Her griddle is dry although she does season it with ghee.
Everything looks delicious, I would skip the fries though.
Nicely done!
Thank you...really glad we make this...easy and fantastic flavor
Great vid!. Love the naan bread recipe. More vids using naan bread. Danny, from RateMyTakeAway would approve!
Hey we loved it too… maybe pizza style or even cheesesteaks. That soft bread rolled up with greasy cheesy steak
@@TheFlatTopKing that would be great
Looks great. Is there anything that you can substitute for the yogurt as I’m allergic to it?
✊🏼🧐👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👌! That looks absolutely FIRE my guy! I’d like to give this a go, this one’s calling my name. Hot-damm that looks good. You knocked it out the park with this one. Cheers y’all 👊🏼😎🤙🏼
Go for it brother...really easy and great results...
Great job making a comprehensive recipe seem doable!
Donna & I will be doing this challenge in 2 days!
You both are awesome and hard to believe you guys aren’t the least bit
Chubby 😂
Great Video Neil aka FTK
Hey I appreciate that...let us know what ya think
@@TheFlatTopKing my wife & I prepared this shawarma tonight following your recipe on your website and believe me Neil it was a challenge for us, but we got it done and it was delicious. Thanks so much for the challenge that you’re bringing to our culinary developmental skills lol.
We both really love watching your podcast with you and your wife. You guys are a great team and you complement each other very well.
Congratulations on all your future successes
We purchased a property in Tennessee so sometime next summer, we are going to be neighbors !
I wish I had seen this before I made homemade naan bread last Thursday! I used a recipe I found online and it did not work well at all. I cannot wait to try yours!😂I followed the recipe exactly that I found the other day and I added an extra cup and a half of flour and it was STILL sticky and gloppy! It would not roll out I had to do it with my fingers. It was chewy and thick in spots and very thin in spots! I’m used to making dough that rolls well and does what I want it to. So next time I’m using your recipe!❤I made brisket pizzas out of some one time I got at the store and I want to do that again but not with the other dough I tried!!!!
Unless I just got super lucky....this was awesome...truly...easy for sure...fantastic results...
Have you tried making the Shawarma on a vertical spot on the smoker yet? This would be a good smoker to griddle option.
NO....i might do that on my other channel...
Hey guys, have tried Navajo tacos? the fry bread is so good.
Its on our list.....thanks
Quick money saving tip: talk to your local deer processor and see if they will give the long bones to you; they have plenty and it saves them money on disposal. They're packed with marrow. Also get the rest of the bones for an awesome stock that could be reduced for ice cube trays.
Perfect....
As-salam alaikum, Sheikh. A fantastic job, as usual.
WOW....thank you...really appreciate that...when creating recipes that I have no experience with and dealing with different cultures, I honestly try to take it seriously...to represent the culture
Shawarma is a fantastic dish. The spices give it an unparalleled flavor in the world of rotisserie meats.
P.S. I'm the guy who keeps bugging you about the Strammer Max and Croque monsieur/madame.
Thinking bout cooking the Thanksgiving turkey on the blackstone if I can find a dome lid big enough. Turkey is 15 lbs. any tips?
2 words...oven or smoker...
“Dang, Honey!” That says it all!
Is the chicken really spicy? Spice doesn't bother me, but my wife is pretty sensitive to it. I'll definitely be trying this one. Thank you for posting.
I mean not really but if sensitive..maybe add ingredients and separate the heat and cook separately
What griddle are you using?
Halo that day
He is getting lucky tonight by the sounds of it. Lol
hahahha I cook 4 nights a week
Looks really good but i would have to leave the clove out. My Grandmother ruined me on cloves because every Thanksgiving she woukd bake a ham and put like 50 cloves in the ham. There was so much clove that the neighbors could smell and taste it from their house. We do love Naan and the ones you did on the griddle looks great!
ahhahaha Understand...try cardamom....
@@TheFlatTopKing Will do, thanks man
I did naan on a soapstone in the Joe and it was great so I was hoping it would work on the griddle too. Thanks for trying it for us!
Would your tortilla press work for the Naan bread?
I dont think...it would need to be heated I think....
@@TheFlatTopKing I was meaning to flatten not cook.
When it comes to take out food, I don't think anything tops shawarma. You should keep an eye open for Lebanese cucumber pickles. They are small and skinny so they put a bunch into the shawarma whole. I had it for the first time this year and it was really good. Though nothing beats authentic shawarma cut right from the spit.
will do...what different about a lebanese pickle
@@TheFlatTopKingThey had more flavor. I suspect they put additional seasoning in the brine. I've only had it the one time, but I want to try finding to some to make my own shawarma. FYI - check out Middle Eats on here. He's got a lot of cooking videos that look delicious.
@@dorkistry ty
Missing spinach and black olives
That didnt to ever come up with this dish....is that common or personal preference
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
TY
Where’s the hummus. - looks good even without it. Pickled radish instead of the pickles….either is good.
Is there a reason you used regular chicken thigh only to remove the skin and bones? Why not just use boneless/ skinless?
Honestly..i edited out the original video...because they were on sale for .98c lb vs 2.78lb...in about 3 total min...both packages were done...
Well shoot thats another one i have to make bummer
Haha jk i cant wait to make it
ahhhaha
If its not tight, it's not right😂
thats what HE said...
I'm gonna continue harping on you to stop using so much yeast! I'm going to make the Naan but I'm going to make a poolish with a fraction of the yeast you used. And just to tick you and Amy off, I'm going to email you my results haha! But everything else looks absolutely insanely deliciously!!! You know, I might make it in my wood fired pizza oven just for giggles.
That is way too much seasoning, but who has the balls to admit they added too much? .... I made some pancakes the other day, from scratch. They looked amazing. But, if i did not have my dogs, they would have ended up in the trash.
NOW>>>>>>>How many times have you made chicken shawarma???
Pickles on schwarma??🤦🏻♂️
Yeah...seems common....really common...
This looks like a lot of work but it looks worth every minute. I'm going to try this when it gets warmer.
