I always wondered why the military saw these as obsolete and took in bolt action rifles, as much as i love bolt actions, leverguns contain more rounds and have a quick action
To me, lever actions aren't as accurate as a bolt action. I even tried putting a scope on one, and the group still wasn't as tight as my bolt action rifles. Could just be me IDK.
Lever action guns were unable to handle cartridges as powerful as single shot or bolt action rifles, additionally lever guns are difficult to fire prone. Look at the 1873 Winchester vs the Springfield Trapdoor: even though the Springfield is single shot it handles the big .45-70 round, compared to the handgun-grade .44-40 that the Winchester handled by default. By the time the lever guns were able to handle .45-70 with the Winchester 1886 there were already bolt action rifles like the 1871/84 Mausers that had more capacity accuracy, and could be fired from prone.
love lever action guns. but i can see here why bolt action rifles replaced them in the end. would tilting the rifle while reloading solve the problem? i cant test it myself since im german and, you know, strict gun laws blablabla...
Can't believe the light recoil from those 44-40 rounds, esp. in the carbine! Haven't fired one of these in years, thanks for reviving some good memories! Enjoy that "Yellowboy"!
Would love to know some spec’s on the weapons you use. Like distance and how many rounds the weapons can take, etc. Thanks for a great channel. ❤ your work.
The Winchester 1873 has a lid in place that disposes of bullets, it's like the lid on the m4 when you start shooting it opens and you can close it manually
The well-kept elegance and profound beauty of this firearm is utterly stunning, what with the craftsmanship of the varnish and brass-bronze plating that separated this firearm from the rest of them when it was originally designed. The plating was, as previously mentioned, a brass-bronze alloy that would not easily rust unlike the iron plated counterparts of its day. This is a piece of art and, as Sun Tsu would say, an art of war.
People always think they have a Technological Advantage, until the other side gets it too. Here is the deadliest weapon of it's time. The Winchester Repeating Rifle. Bad Mojo, or Perfect.
Close. The predecessor of the Winchester ‘66, the 1860 Henry rifle. Had no fore stock and a totally different way of loading. But mechanically identical. And same big slab sided brass (actually “gunmetal”) receiver.
An elegant weapon, for a more uncivilized time.
I'd say a more civilized time, unfortunately...

I always wondered why the military saw these as obsolete and took in bolt action rifles, as much as i love bolt actions, leverguns contain more rounds and have a quick action
Because lever are more complex and expensive and bolt are more reliable
Its difficult to fire lever action from a prone position.
Bc bolt is more cheap and reliable

The original 1866 winchesters were all chambered in .44 rimfire.
