This works because of the properties of ellipses. They are defined by choosing two points, called the foci, and drawing the outer edge so that the sum of the distances from any point on the outer edge to the two foci is constant. That is, if you pick a point on the ellipse, the sum of the distances to the two foci is the same number. Due to this design, any projectile launched from one foci will bounce perfectly to arrive at the other foci. This is used in other applications also, such as lithotripsy (kidney stone breaking procedure) using the 3-dimensional version of this property.

For those of you not in the know, let me explain how it works. The secret is that the pool table is not a circle; it’s an ellipse (basically an oval). Ellipses have two foci with the unique property that the distance between them is the same as the sum of the distances between them and any singular point on the ellipse. What this guy did is he positioned the hole at one focus, and marked the location of the other with the little white dot.

A pool ball velocity vector doesn’t reflect strictly with respect to the normal of the impact point. There is always some spin involved, some loss, and the trajectory when it leaves the rail is a bit curved because it takes some time for the spin to actually match the motion of the ball, there is some complex friction play when it leaves the rail
