Canto 5 Is A Story Everyone Needs To Hear | Limbus Company

  • Project Moon has shown in Canto 4 a story about getting over depression. They told such a beautiful story that really resonated with me. And in Canto 5 Project Moon tells a story of Hate, Obsession and Revenge… Yet it's also a story about one’s Dreams, Future, and Meaning in life. It's something that I believe everyone should hear, as what's covered within it is unfortunately very common to see. However, I believe this Canto has completely raised the bar for Limbus Companies story... How they will follow this up for Canto 6, I can't even begin to imagine. But I think Project Moon will probably make another masterpiece for that... yes, I'm officially glazing....

    I am fucking obsessed with the symbolism in this chapter. I gasped when I saw Ahab's silhouette before the fight-- it looked like an anatomical heart, and her shoulder was the aorta. The first major arteries that branch off the aorta are the brachiocephalic, the largest one that represents Queequeg, the left carotid, where Starbuck sits, and the left subclavian, where Pip sits. I was fucking SHOOK.

    I've said this in DMs but a detail what I've noticed with this Canto is how Pilot actually tied into the story. His role wasn't 100% throwaway as his relationship with the LCCB parallels Ahab's relationship with The Pequod Crew. He is literally trained by the LCCB that scouting out the golden boughs is a job and mission that is worth dying for, and they should take pride on the sacrifices made to recover it.
    Pilot being the last alive member of his team and victim to the Whale perfectly mirrors Ishmael's situation as well. It's such a clever detail and writing how Pilot literally lays the foundation for the plot and themes of Canto 5

    • @cayoticsgaming2328
      @cayoticsgaming2328 Před 5 měsíci +60

      That makes me wonder what if Pilot returns but with Ishmaels old personality after finding out fully that yea his team is gone, there is no hope for him to see them again, would be interesting though I do also like the idea of pilot staying the same and instead finding his own different meaning either sticking with he whole club motto on sacrifice or finding his own meaning in life and growing in the background like I am sure Saude will sow back up different after finding out she is alive

    This is my favorite chapter, not just for ishmeal, not just for dante, but also for heathcliff, it's subtle, but if you look, you'll see he fully cares about the sinners, when dante gets stabbed by ishmael, he asks dante if he's OK, then when dante says the clocks fine he specifies he ment him, and he helps ishmael out of the palid, even if he fights with her a lot, it shows he's not just a violent person, but someone a bit sharp around the edges, and he actually has a hidden love for some of the people around him, how they managed to fill a chapter with so much growth is pretty crazy

    one of the things I like the most about this Canto, is how unlike Roland's story of revenge ended in letting go and forgiving, here Ish actually fulfilled her revenge, but in her own terms, instead of following Ahab's command of killing her, Ish's whale, she killed Ahab's whale, voiding the Captain's entire purpose of living
    even in Compass, the lyrics kinda reflect that decision, going from "I cursed this relationship between you and me" to "I pierced trough the rope that strangled you and me", this with the context given by Queequeg about that time Ishmael was reborn and how she views their relationship in the present "the rope snaped, I buried you". Ishmael this time cut the rope on her own volition and with that she took her revenge in a way more powerful than giving in to Ahab's madness, becoming Ahab 2.0 in the process

    • @mightaswell
      @mightaswell Před 5 měsíci +31

      Although in a way I do find it to be revenge, I do think Ishmael mainly did it because she learned to move on, it wasn’t entirely to spite Ahab, as the lyrics say, she merely pierced the rope that strangled them, and while she has a compass, ahab has none. Despite being the ultimate victory over Ahab, Ahab still has a chance to find her own compass and give this up, as Ishmael let her live(we all know Ahab won’t be able to do this, but still). Either way it is still somewhat of a revenge but Ishmael does it because she lets her obsession go, as its whats best for her, rather than doing it just because its a form of revenge on her own terms, wether Ahab finds her own compass or continues further down her obsession and eventually dies for it is something that doesn’t concern Ishmael

  • @malleuslimbus
    @malleuslimbus Před 5 měsíci +145

    I absolutely love how Ahab at first didn't care at all during the final fight that Ishmael was going to be the one to kill the whale after the fight was over, because if Ishy did get her revenge at the end she'd be no different from Ahab, so "Captain Ahab" would still have killed the whale
    She only freaks out when Ishmael lets go of her revenge and frees both of them from their obsession, because they were no longer one and the same. God, the symbolism behind GasHarpoon is so perfect

    • @MalganisLefay
      @MalganisLefay Před 4 měsíci +7

      I would say it goes even a step deeper with Ahabs ramblings afterwards. In a sense with her act of defiance trying to free them both, Ish avoided becoming the new Aheb, but doing so, she took everything from Ahab, just like the whale did before and thus, effectively claiming the role/title of the pale whale for herself instead in this story.

    I think what helps solidify the Canto's symbolism even more is the rope you get at the beginning of the dungeon

    Honestly, Ishma's obsession growing disturbingly similar to Ahab is entirely true, but one particular detail is the one that unnerves me the most.
    So we know that each Sinner has a room in the Bus based around them like an E.G.O. type deal, even if we have yet to see them, well I always had this head cannon that their rooms are exactly like their art depicted from their E.G.O. (as in their personal ones, not the Abno ones they can use), but part of me always had reservations about that head cannon, mostly 'cause at least half of the sinners looked haunted, disturbed and/or uncomfortable in the art so I thought "surely at least their rooms would allow them to sleep well, right?" And the most glaring one for me (aside from others) was Ishma's, mostly 'cause if my head cannon was in effect then that'd mean she was constantly drowning in her own room, no amount of sleep/rest to be had.
    I thought that no other detail could unnerve me like that one, and the Ahab did the same but somehow *Worse*, and seeing those paralels made understand just how long and deep this obsesion had been driving Ishma, and how much it'd change her if she managed to see it through the end.

    There is one more piece to Ishmael's agony: realization. Even if somewhere along the way she noticed how she's being controlled by Ahab, who is able to bear the pain of cutting off a part of their life so gargantuan it became integral with your own identity? Who is ready to do whats not unlike slicing off your own hand or leg?
    To face it is terrifying, too terrifying to bear. Obe would rather see the decay to the end.
    Also, i think ishmaels issues were visible before, but until 4.5 we only saw symptomes: her NEEDING dante to be someone to know where he's going.
    Im also convinced ishy wanted to put out going to U corp for two reasons, both subconscious. A) in her heart she is a compassionate person, shielding others from harm, albeit wont admit it, and B) when quest for her "whale" will be over, so will be the last thing she looks forward in her life.

      I personally think we're going to get a lighthearted story for 5.5 about Christmas and allude to something sinister but then it doesn’t actually happen.
      Then have it flipped and be depressing for 6 since Heathcliff has been poor for most of his life and see christmas as some snobby holiday. We’re going to learn more about how he grew up poor and was exploited and it's going to be sort of a calm sad drama where he’s the wildness that contrasts it and end with a bittersweet ending for Heathcliff where he realizes that much hasn't changed with how the city works.
      But he’ll be more relaxed to the unfortunate circumstance and maybe even become a kinder person to help others combat the unfairness of the city.
      And then Don's chapter will come and somehow be crazier and more messed up than lovetown, we saw how crazy Ishmael got because of Ahab. Don will double down and be a scarred survivor of something incomprehensibly horrible. Heathcliff might try to help her along with the rest but I imagine her whole hero thing is a cope to not accept how true evil can be allowed to exist.

    (LoR spoilers below)
    Their stories are pretty similar. They both lost all of their friends and obsessed over their desire to get revenge. However, someone (Miris and Dante) stopped them from acting on their impulse, and guided them to let go of their obsession and find a new path.
    In Xiao’s case, she decided to fight not for revenge, but so that her coworkers deaths would not be vain.
    And for Ishmael, she chose to let Ahab live, not just to prove that Ishmael wasn’t Ahab but also to take away Ahab’s only purpose, the whale, which broke Ahab.

    The real question now is how will they top this? Really the themed resonated soo deeply with me (double pun intended) I can't imagine how any other sinner's story (beside maybe Salt's) will be able to go beyond my enjoyment of that chapter. To top it all the irony of letting Ahab live was delightful. One one hand Ishmael made her suffer a fate worse than death but by killing the whale she also killed "Ahab" as her obsession was her whole being.

    Canto V was definetly a new Limbus high in terms of consistent quality. Maybe it's thanks to the pattern recognition letting Ishmael know that her turn it up before the Canto event started, but the story definetly benefits from her arc already being in full drive way before they make it to the dungeon.
    Granted, Ishmael's story didn't resonate quite as much with me as some of the previous stuff, but she still hits hard. Girl really knows how to pierce a heart.
    On a less relevant note, given how much interaction Ishmael and Outis had this arc, to the point of Outis joining her in the front of the credit CG, I wonder if it'll turn out the two have actually bonded. Like, both Yi Sang and Ishmael have started viewing the Sinners as their friend group, but someone pointing at Outis in particular and calling her a friend on an individual level would just be wild to me.

    Whales are portrayed in canto 5 as creatures that use their oil to make others lose their sense of self and purpose and assimilate them.
    We can see this with Ishmael falling into the oil and was slowly losing her sense of self, Queequeg gave her a new purpose and pulled her up.
    We also see this with Ahab's crew whose identity was slowly eroded over the years by the whale oil and they were able to resist it by Ahab becoming a "whale", giving the crew the purpose of killing the whale. Ahab in that way is the whale in Ishmael's story.
    When Ishmael killed the heart at the end, I feel as though it represented her heart of obsession to kill Ahab, her heart for Queequeg and her crewmates and Ahab's goal to slay the pallid whale.
    Chapter 5 is peak..

    Been hyped for this chapter since 4.5, and it's the best chapter, no contest. Every setup from it, and before, was masterfully paid off, to the point where I have no idea what you even do for her other Cantos. It was clear to me since 4.5 that her obsession was born out of hate but also sadness, needing to believe that her crew is still alive. She constantly reiterated that everyone is just there for the contract, because she's utterly terrified of becoming attached to the Limbus crew and losing them, again. Forcing herself to be isolated so that it doesn't hurt when they get lost, but also unable to NOT get attached, which is why she is so utterly terrified of the concept of being up next. And that's not even talking about all the other amazingly executed parts in the Canto

Two people weighted down by having nothing to look forward to; building a shy, desperate dream of there being 'something' afterwards the sail ends. Not even any particular goal - but just idea of tying yourself to another in order to weather the journey. There isnt particular thing she planned to do in future, but focused her vision on something - someone - "tangible" to make this dream more real, more "graspable".

So in the end of the canto i just cried as well i was kinda hoping in a future to find a purpose for life in anyway, cuz right now the only reason i'm here is cuz my only wish is hunt my own Ahab, but i know thats not what i should want, but right now, thats what it is and i don't want to reach at that point, i want to find another alternative to live. However, despite all that, my favorite thing from this Canto is the further showcasing of Gigachad Himcliff. I swear, this dude has received the most shadow character development out of anyone else, going from just being an obnoxious asshole to someone who respects and supports his fellow sinners and Dante. One of the points in favor of Project Moon's writing that is not talked about that much is, how it can completely change someones opinion of a character. Tsu's first impressions of Ishmael and Yi Sang was that they were bland and an annoying emo but after their respective canto's he likes them. First impressions count for a lot and it is difficult to change someones view of a character, especially if the first impression was really bad. When was the last time anyone here made a near or even full 180 degree turn on their opinion of a character? To not just tolerate someone you hated but actually loving them now?

    Moby the whale is a metaphor, representing whatever depending on interpretation (God, satan, nature or something)
    Limbus's Moby, at least to me, represents the cycle of revenge and being trapped in wandering what your life means. The Pallid Whale's existence is nonsensical, it devours, but excretes a lot of its prey out anyway, what it does has no purpose, only causing suffering around it. Ahab has a revenge-fueled hate towards the Whale, and has dedicated a mission that, once again serves no meaningful purpose other than to simply satisfy her vengeance, and has caused suffering to the people around her as a result. Then came Ishmael, who is heading to that same path too this time targeting Ahab. It's a cycle of revenge and meaningless purposes/goals, and in this Canto, Ishmael must break free from this cycle once and for all.
    By choosing to literally kill steal the whale from Ahab, Ishmael not only took revenge on Ahab in a way that doesn't conform to Ahab's madness, it's also her freeing away from this purposeless cycle once and for all. Ahab? She can rot in this prison of revenge that she herself not only built, but utterly refuses to free herself from.

    If she killed ahab she would just given ahab what she wanted.She would be just been manipulated by ahab to doing what she wants.She'll be just the same as she was in the past blindly following orders from ahab without questioning it or thinking for hersel.I mean ahab ordered Ishmael to kill her.

I loved the unique challenges of Canto 5 (well maybe except the Big Brother fight where you get ZERO indication that Ishmael is immortal as long as someone else is alive. I had so much trouble that I had to ask my buddy to put his Nclair up just to beat it. Also I ended up bringing Sloshmael to the dungeon which was... a very bad idea.)
    As a stupid fucking idiot, I actually wish that the dungeon got to be longer, with more of the dialogue fleshing out Ishmael's story like Yi Sang got in Canto 4 (like seriously the dungeon is basically a play by play of his entire timeline up to him joining LCB), because I didn't feel like I had much time to really think and appreciate things like Ahab's constant gaslighting, the stories of the other members of The Pequod, Ishmael's struggle with purpose, and stuff like that. All of that pretty much got one or two cutscenes each, and like, I'm fucking stupid, so I need that shit split up a little with some short battles in between to let things cook in my head

    I want to love it, I really do, but I have 3 problems I can't overlook.
    1. Her story (in the present) was WAY to close to Roland's story. I love a good revenge plot but there just wasn't many differences to his story to sit right with me.
    2. Her reason for joining Ahab in the first place was brain dead. I get being bored and doing something risky to fix that. People would rather electrocute themselves then be bored. But everyone knows how BAD the waves and whales are. It's come knowledge to the people of U corp.
    3. This one is more skeptic then the last 2 but I don't see how she'll change in the coming updates. With Yi Sang and Sinclar they GREW from they're experiences. To me Ishmael didn't grow, just looks at life differently now. I guess it's not a bad thing but if we compare Ishmael to THE BOY Yi Sang and want he became, I still think canto 4 is better.
    All my problems are with part 3 of the chapter. Part 1 and 2 beat of canto 5 is better then 4s, but the ending makes the journey with it for me at least.

    • @KnakuanaRka
      @KnakuanaRka Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah, I sort of agree with 3, but in my own way. With Sinclair and Yi Sang, it’s obvious there’s something up with them from the start; after their chapters, we get to see Sinclair become more assertive and Yi Sang have more initiative compared to before. For Ishmael, she was initially more or less the most sensible one of the crew; we didn’t see what was up with her until around 4.5, so the end of 5 seems to have put her right back where she was before.

      Roland's revenge played out very differently Ish didn't rampage nor did she intend to betray people along her way nor did she really cause any collateral.
      Ish's revenge was an obsession a much more personal focus, Roland's was a wave of destruction that harmed all involved it was a much wider scale story that reflected the nature of the city itself.
      The only real similarities I see are just the basic's of a revenge story their entire substance is otherwise different to me.
      2.
      This is rather consistent long recurring point of the city though, not an isolated incident, well established throughout the games. The lifestyle of the wings breaks the feathers inside to the point many of them go to these lengths (such as joining an office or syndicate or fingers) to find some meaning even if it is that dangerous.

      Bruh shut up. Limbus Company was made so that Project Moon could get the funding needed to make future projects and games as they were only a small company

      @@mangocookie4790And how do you think limbus is getting new content? You seriously believe that none of the money they make is going into making new IDs' and server maintenance? You actually think that they will not ride the gacha gravy train until it runs dry? Companies, small or not, all have 1 goal: money. And if gacha is what makes them the most money, you can bet your ass their "future projects" will follow that direction. Stop simping for corporations, they don't care about you. Gacha is gambling without the regulations, it's immoral, and should be illegal.

      idk meropticon_1651, I think a company that makes games criticizing the topics you just said wouldn't be one

    Honestly I really love the variety in the tone of the chapters we have been getting yet you can still see how much thought and care goes into them and all of them carry the same core belief of finding one's own path and affirming who you truly are for the better. Canto IV was more of a low key, surreal tragedy between three friends in a world that hated them just for being who they were and how their inability to comprehend one another and fear of being separated from each other forever shattered their bond. And with Canto V now we have what initially starts as this intense epic about monsters larger than life, natural disasters, pirates, criminals and undefeatable odds yet ends as yet another very personal and poignant story, now about self discovery and letting your experiences empower you rather than weigh you down. Both chapters carry very similar themes of grief, loneliness and the meaning of life but express it very differently for two very different kinds of people while still carrying so much symbolism, weight and background to each and it's genuinely incredible to see.
    It's specially of note taking in count how the protagonist of The Wings didn't have a name and his story ends in a confusing scene that is most likely a suicide after having lost what was the center of his world and the only thing that gave him any sense of self being the bond he had with his wife who had kept him locked away from the world and slowly dying, while in Moby Dick the original Ishmael wasn't even the central protagonist and instead the bystanding narrator while Ahab who declared himself a hero and definer of the world compared to mythical supermen like Odysseus (Outis) or the original Faust as the true protagonist of the book, and Ishmael wasn't even granted his own ending being left to an ambigous fate despite being so much more human and openminded. So in both cases we start with the original stories of narrators without agency that get turned into characters that learn to reclaim their own identity after the end of their source books. Taking in count Canto VI is about Wuthering Heights that is all about love, grief, the pressure of society to be someone else and revenge like these previous two Cantos it makes me wonder how they will follow up for Heathcliff's arc since the previous stories tackled very similar territory, maybe that's the real reason Ishmael, Heathcliff and Yi Sang were Magic Hellbus' focus Sinners?
