How to Repair a Polyethylene Agricultural Sprayer Tank

  • Polyethylene spray tanks are prone to crack either from getting dropped or from freezing temperatures. This tank is one that mounts to the back of an ATV. The tank was dropped and developed a crack. It also developed a crack that the owner tried to repair unsuccessfully with an adhesive. This will be an easy repair.
    Most agricultural spray tanks (and those made for ATVs) are made from polyethylene. This is because nothing will react with polyethylene; it is very stable. Solvents don't affect it.
    Polyethylene tanks have low surface energy so liquids (and adhesives) have a difficult time "wetting out" on the surface. Putting an adhesive on polyethylene is like putting water on a freshly waxed car. The adhesive wants to "bead up" on the surface. The only way to permanently repair the polyethylene chemical spray tanks is to weld the plastic as shown here.

      Thanks, Paul! Welding rod can be purchased from our website, and the type you get depends on the type of plastic you are working with. This video features a tank made of polyethylene, so you'd need polyethylene welding rod.

    How would you recommend repairing stripped threads on a poly tank? The 1" hole is nearly smooth on the inside (threads are basically gone) and I'd like to install a spigot.

    • @scottb7600
      @scottb7600 Před 6 lety +2

      It may be possible to weld a new layer of plastic inside the 1" hole and then drill and tap the hole. If there is enough meat on the outside of the hole you could always drill to the next size larger and tap that and install a bushing. There may also be oversized fittings available or possibly a helicoil.

    I have one leaking from the square bolt hold down nuts on the bottom of the tank, how would fix that?

    • @scottb7600
      @scottb7600 Před 3 lety

      It would depend on the accessibility of the bolts. If they are through bolts and you have access to the inside of the tank, you could weld over the heads of the bolts with plastic filler rod, or you may just need a rubber seal replaced. If they slip into a bracket on the bottom of the tank, you'll have to roll the tank on its side, remove the bolt and then weld the crack. Contact polyvance on their website and send a picture. With a picture or two, surely a good solution can be found.

    Was that HDPE ? Show and discuss the tool !

      It is polyethylene, most likely HDPE. We usually recommend repairing HDPE using LDPE welding rod because it is easier to work with. In this video, we used a hot air plastic welder to melt the rod and an airless plastic welder to smooth the weld. You can see our hot air plastic welders here: www.polyvance.com/Hot-Air-Welders-1/
