  • This Star Citizen issue has been plaguing the game for the last two years. I just hope someone at CIG is listening and has some answers, or could set some expectations about when we can expect this issue to be resolved.

    Probably my most rushed edit to date, apologies for the lack of quality and probably some rambling. I'm renovating my studio this weekend and didn't have time to round this one off, but i hope it gets the point across.
    Few notes: Invisible players, in some form, have actually been around three years, since 3.8. I said two in the video. 3.8 dropped in Dec 2019, though it was less frequent back then and has gradually gotten worse through the years/patches.
    I wanted to open up discussion surrounding this issue, raise awareness for the player base (this is not an isolated PTU issue, its pretty common in LIVE), and perhaps some acknowledgement from CIG that this is being looked, they are aware of it, or know why it's even happening. I could be way off. Let me know what you think, has this issue impacted your SC experience? Were you aware of it before seeing this video?

      It's what we call a "client" sync issue.
      The players "client" doesn't sync accurately with other clients causing the problem.
      This EXACT same bug literally just occurred in Escape From Tarkov as well, which made some players invisible to other players.
      So that's exactly what it is, client desync issues.

      Isn't it a bug related to the whole desync stuff we have ? Maybe the holy server meshing will fix that ?

    From my experience, more often then not, a same symptom (say "invisible player") can be triggered by a variety of different bugs, in various different particular conditions. So it is very possible that CIG actually DID fix bugs triggering "invisible player". Just not all of them.
    Certainly doesn't mean this issue isn't frustrating, or even game breaking indeed.

      yep if the problem is the used tech and the raise of fixed bugs coming back its fair.. maybe something need to be looked at to resync affected players its been 2 years, a simple rejoin does fix it. so what process is done during the rejoin that fixes this and could be actioned during gameplay without leaving.. think the goal is looking for dev feedback...

      Exactly this! Players or items going invisible for some players but not others (in particular not the invisible player themselves, but sometimes other players as well) would be the effect of any time when different game clients and/or the server have a different idea of what exists or where it is. The client that doesn't know that the entity exists or that believes the entity is 20 000km away will of course not render it. The number of ways that different clients might end up with different ideas of what things exist or where they are is huge. These all fall under the general heading of "desync", as in not all clients and/or the server are synchronized about what is there or where it is. All of these issues need to be fixed, but new reasons arise all the time (I am sure we will see far more of these with PES). There is no fix-all for this problem, because it is a single symptom that can arise from a huge number of causes.

      @@sc_cintara I fully agree and assume this will only get fixed with server meshing or at least be a much rarer, this tech was designed with server meshing and large player counts in mind and even something like a slightly bad ping can cause it. I will also argue that the relog option is not necessarily the only fix as a couple of org mates and me have run into this before as well. I will add that we tend to do a lot of service beacons and we tend to take our own ships and have noticed that 2 out of the three times this has happened to us we simply had to quantum to a new station in our own ships. This seems to fix the problem for us. (sometimes)
      I will say that this may be a problem with no real solution since almost anything can cause it in an environment of this size nut server meshing may be the thing that fixes the problem as it would diversify the load between servers so the overhead (resources required) per player will be less per server. From my current understanding is that every single entity with a volume, inventory or enclosed entity is viewed as a container. Moving this container is highly dependent on the server tick rate, client connection and volume (number of items within the container) if any of this goes wrong or bad during transfer it may damage or need to regenerate that container. With cargo being added to the game there will be more containers to move which will cause this problem more often. This may be one of the biggest reasons of 100 player servers just being a test and considering that we are still stable at this number is a large feat within itself.
      I have iterated a lot of what Cintara said above and tried to simplify it even more for somebody that may not have any coding background and have stated when this may be "better". The Valkyrie has many problems and the fact that this happens may explain why you can't change the guns on those turrets as well, the containers on the Valkyrie may just be broken.
      Think of containers being like Russian dols and they rely on data traffic to fit into each other correctly if something happens to the data wile fitting them together from the client or server side the doll inside breaks.

    I am a developer (not on star citizen) and had this error in 3.17.5 last time when someone tried to enter my ship. This happens at grid change, as you say. you can still see e.g. items appear if the other person puts them out, so it only affects existing objects. Most likely it is an error that happens at the point where the player object is handed over in the data tree, which tells me that the remove event is sent without properly introducing the new object in the other grid on the client, which could even be some exception only clientside that only affects the visual part, who knows. So, technically this is desync, but it is a logical desync, so it can be avoided, if one finds the logic error, or introduces e.g. a dedicated hand-over protocol for changing grids. This could be as so simple as e.g. having a dedicated packet for reparenting, instead of sending remove and add, but now I am just fishing for fixes for possible logic errors, it could be anything really, race conditions, dropped packets, or something where the order of two commands matters more than meets the eye.
    CIG really needs to develop a more mature attitude for bugfixing, for sure. It's not like that grows over night, and suddenly in the future they are faster at fixing the game breaking bugs "when all is done

      this comment needs upvotes, i dick around with basic code for a hobby and i think you're kind of spot on with the idea that this is a logical error in which the server is failing to update client side entities. i always found it strange that we could kick and invis guy and reinvite him to get him to show up or that gear they put on would show. super insightful dude.

    The invisibility bug has been so gamebreaking and disruptive that most of the people in the FPS platoon of our org have lost all motivation to play the game. It is the one major thing stopping a ton of people from enjoying the large scale combat that we all love. We started noticing it widespread for over a year now and it's gone unfixed and even unmentioned by CIG for way too long. It happens to our platoon almost EVERY single time they play the game. Having CIG at least mention the bug and getting it on their radar would be a huge win for the FPS community of SC.

    This happens all the time. I agree with your take. My fear is that this is a sign of fundamental issues with the underlying tech. The same tech we will be building on to get the game we want. Kudos!

    This happened to me and created one of the spookiest experiences ever. I was just a couple days into starting to play regularly. I hopped in my Cutter and in the hanger I noticed the interior doors just opening on their own. I chalked it up as buggy-ness. I hop in the pilot seat and take off into quantum. I continue to hear the doors opening and closing. I get out of the seat a search the little ship. No one onboard, no one in the bathroom. So I open up the key bindings menu to set some things and learn new keys while in flight. Next thing I know, I'm knocked out. I come to and my pistol (it was out of ammo) is gone! The hairs on my arm start to stand on end. I am in a damn haunted ship! I get knocked out again. When I come to I draw the Gallant rifle that I had and start shooting all over. Then the invisible player started screaming on mic and it scared the shit out of me. I immediately logged to menu. When I came back in, I now had two cutters at the ship selection screen. The original one can never be claimed and is constantly located at Grim Hex and that haunted ship can stay there forever. Truly one of the freakiest experiences playing a non-horror game. It legit gave me goosebumps and I felt like a ghost was present. But yeah they should for sure fix that bug.

    There is an easy workaround for this bug. We enccounter it often too. All you have to do is to kick the players from the party who is invisible for most ppl and re-invite them. This workes about 90% of the times for us.

      That solution works sometimes yes, but it doesn’t solve issues for massive org v org fps battles where you aren’t in the other teams party anyway.

    Ive dealt with this bug often. I remember somehow one of my friends was able to do a takedown and it fixed the issue. Knocking someone out seems to fix many bugs where you lose functionality, get stuck, etc

    It can happen quite often. I don't believe CIG is ignoring it, that would almost hint at some kind of malice on their part, considering how commonly it happens, it's certain they know it's occurring.
    It, like many long-standing bugs in Star Citizen, is most likely one of those very tricky bugs that, each time they think they've nailed it, it pops up again. I play from China, greatly increasing my desync, when compared to others. I think this makes it more likely to happen to me, often enough that when it does happen, I'm basically "Ah, I guess I'm invisible again because I'm right beside you."
    It's annoying, but like almost all bugs in Star Citizen, I take the attitude of "it happens" and just play through it.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. You are right in your approach, what more can you do? We've been doing the same. "It happens". But in the context of dynamic events, PVP, bounty hunting, etc. It's a bit of a game breaker personally. Hard to ignore, especially when it seems to be increasing in frequency.

    Extremely good video, extremely frustrating issue. It has almost grinded our FPS Operations to a halt because of people able to kill other players whilst being invisible, and its getting worse with vehicles. More and more people are getting to know how to reproduce this bug and doing it on purpose to ruin gameplay. SoO, JT, SPK.... they are all destroyed by this bug... CIG YOU HAVE TO PUBLICALLY recognise this and talk to us about it... I'm actually getting worried about the future if this type of thing keeps happening.

    I don't think I've ever "seen" this bug before, but I'm usually solo or with 4 or fewer other people in a party. Been off-and-on playing since 2015.

    As a 3-ppl squad me and friends encountered this bug quite often when we was learning how to do a prison break and dying in a process.

    I've run into it a few times when messing around with friends and self destructing ships on one another. Usually ending up spawning back in a hospital bed and unable to see one if not more of the party at a time until relogging or dying once again.

    this is more than likely a bug involved in the back end, much like desync. CIG isn't ignoring it, but it is merely a symptom of the main problem and once they can solve that this bug should hopefully be more fixable if it needs it.

      I think i would just like to see some broader acknowledgement about this issue. It crops up in so many different situations, but all somehow related, in my opinion, to culling and/or object containers. It's just pretty game breaking, unless you just pretend it doesn't exist.

    There seem to be different triggering mechanisms, I wonder if they're fixing what starts the invisible players, rather than looking for something to force resync.
    For example, in the initial release, it seemed like players often became invisible after experiencing damage that would incap them. They took damage, but magically revived on their end, and could continue to interact with the game world, while others would see their incapped corpse at where they were downed.
    Now it seems like invisible players come from players dying, reviving, and then not being properly streamed in when they leave the spawn area.

    Been seeing it a few times. In December on microtech, three people talking to each other via ingame voip got on the train and rode with me, but I never saw a soul.

    Great video. My org runs FPS training from time to time and we run into this. It can be demoralizing when you realize that all the work of a skirmish has been undone by one of the players being invisible to a subset of the other players. Deflating.

    I've seen it but not too many times. Oddly, we saw this the other night. We had a 3-player party created. One had a crash to desktop I believe and both his ship and himself were invisible. And he had an 890 jump!! He thought we were blind to not see it landed at a Ghost Hollow mission. Now, as a test I had him run me over in the Cyclone he had (also invisible). He knocked me to the ground and had to revive me. But....I could walk right thru his Cyclone when I tried afterwards. The only way we knew where he was was his party name marker. Otherwise he was not even there.

    I had heard about it, the first time I saw it I thought the player was shooting through a wall, turns out they were invisible and knew it. Spawn camping Security Post Kareia and shooting people.

    Invisible player bug has been a problem for a long time. Just about everyone I've ever played with knows about this bug and has experienced it. I personally have become invisible after waking up in prison on multiple occasions.

    2 days ago I decided to help someone that decided to get out of their pilot seat in QD, once I reach their, they were completely invis, I had to open my door and have them EVA into my ship, then we QD to their ships and their ship is also invis.

    This has been plaging our group for years. What's intresting is it use to be possible to very easily fix this by sitting down in a chair at a station or inside a ship seat to snap the characters to the local physics grid and basically immediately sync up again. However as time progressed and the more they patched the issue the more it got out of hand.

    Yep, can get the hollow man bug, fairly regularly:
    Just mix slower computer and poor network performance.
    As a developer, I agree It appears to be object loading, there seems to be a missing check for successful object loading before the game finishes loading.
    It is hard to nail down as the failure seems to be any one of a number of missing parts of an objects: texture, mesh, collision mesh, script etc.
    This is why it seems to be different for different people and different experiences for the same people.
    It is missing different bits each time.

    I had a holloman stowaway on my ship. Wait till I left the pilot seat, and the hijacked my ship with me aboard and rammed us into another craft, blowing us up.

    My friends and I once breached and boarded a fully crewed carrack. Had amazing firefights and eventually took over the ship and flew it out to space to loot the bodies. Sadly we ecountered this bug and it ended the up until then amazing experience. One or multiple of the other players respawned in the medbay and kept knocking us unconscious with their fists while we couldn't see them.

      Right! And these awesome experiences, the reasons most of us play, are quickly soured by an issue like this. Thanks for sharin'. We've had these kind of experiences soured plenty over the years. Again, would just like to hear some acknowledgement from CIG that there is hope, or some focus on this issue.

    As a software engineer, I would hate to have to work on that code-base. My org encounters the bug more often that we'd like.

      Same. What a headache. Im under no illusions this will "expedite" its fix, just looking for some enlightenment and acknowledgement on the issue and an understanding of how common this is among the community. Enjoying the replies and seeing just how many others are dealing with it.

    I think the re-use of objects is actually at fault there, because the generally happens after you die in the first place. These objects are then pooled when the entity they belong to is destroyed, so when it is re-used some properties like visibility might have been set wrong or were never set in the first place.

    Happens all the time to me and to my friends. It's frustrating because we usually don't recognize it until we're all stacked and met up, and it makes it hard for us to help (revive, trade items, etc) with the afflicted player.

    The invisible player bug has existed since at least 2.6.1. I know because I fell victim to it when a player snuck aboard my Avenger Titan and stole it after I landed at Port Olisar. They just magically appeared in the pilots seat after I left the ship.

    I had come across this a few times in previous patches but I never knew how often it happened. But it happened the other day at the new SPK and at grim with people inside and outside our group. I hope they figure it out soon. Thanks for making the video, hopefully a larger conversation will come of it.

    To me it never happened until this saturday in a community event, where 2-3 players where invisible to me and what to me where visible players, some where invisible to another players.

    Dude, they have no idea what they are doing. Many bugs like this will never be fixed because it would cause ten more bugs for every bug they fix.

    I think it might be part of the shard bleeding that they’ve been struggling with for a while. If you’re in one shard and are synched it’s going to place everything you do to that specific shard. Items, ships, ect, and you are on shard 1 and everything is fine and dandy until you the player cross a boundary and bring another shard into the equation. Now your ship is on shard 1 and the player is in shard 2. Running into someone who is in shard 2 is going to tell the game to pull up their stuff to display. Someone might have their ship on shard 7, their cargo on 4 while trying to cross into 2. However everything is currently using the same pipeline there’s nothing to guarantee that shard 4 isn’t currently overpopulated and running into bandwidth issues.

    CIG on one of their latest videos talked about the dozens of NPC in a space station in arena commander that real players can't even go into. There were so many NPC in there that it was taking up so much data that it was lowering the fps for anyone in arena commander

    I didn't know this.. but I know one thing
    Star Citizen will be in the top 10 most hacked games (hacks and bug abuses) after SQ42 release and the PU run at full speed.
    If peoples hacking or abusing can enjoy ruining a 20 minutes shooter game they will have orgasm ruining a complete night of grinding. Even more if bases can be raided in the future. Like Rust, ARK, DayZ.. name it...
    Hackers and anti-sports behaviors should be priority number 1 as soon as possible.
    The anti-cheat should be as revolutionary as Star Citizen will be. Or IT WILL slowly die like so many other games because of this cancer.
    Even if peoples don't know its an hacker or bug abuser ruining the fun, the fun is ruin.. It don't take much to loose 50% or more of your potential population. Ask Blizzard employee behind close doors what happened to OW. in 2021 this game should have 100 millions players.. they only had 10 millions. This could happen to SC too.
    PLEASE don't waste 20 years working with legacy tools to create the best game an entire era could produce just to let it die in shame and confusion to hackers and/or other nefarious entities.
    I don't give a fuck if Chris Roberts can personally look at my web browsing history..
    I give CIG "carte blanche", they can do literally anything they want with the game
    But loosing it to a bunch of bullies. This Wont Pass.
    I also believe theses hackers could be paid groups by the industry A-holes to make CIG fail. Unless C.R. sell the full game at least a 80$ before tax(for starter pack). The industry wont be able to put out triple A games at 100$ anymore.
    If you do the math... over another 10 years.. this is billions maybe trillions in lost revenue for a multitudes of reasons (Triple A worth less, cost more to make to be considered top tier, etc...) for other big names in the industry.
    They wont shy away to invest a couples millions to make sure this wont happen.
    CIG best fans are.. US .. we really need to step up and be able to lift our own weight in this new era of mass manipulations.

    I don't recall having encountered this one, but I'll take your word for it. I've lost markers for people and missions before which is likely a related issue.
    If it is linked to SSOCS, my guess is that they've put it on the back burner until getting PES in, as any fix would have to be redone and it isn't something that affects a large percentage of players. That's not to say that it's not serious or doesn't need to be addressed at all. Hopefully we'll see this one get addressed this year, and sooner rather than later.

    our org is very aware, we typically have our guys log out and back in after it happens to us, never knew about the invisible ship thing though

    Just happened to me on a breach and steal missions, we both got cs, and my buddy went down by a guard. I ran around the ship to try and find him and he was invisible. Went out the ship in Eva it said he is 400km away I went back into the ship he said I was running all over him and he just wasn't there for me

    Definitely knew this was a bug, just the other day saw multiple "hollows" requesting ships at the ship terminals, lool.

    You can also test this bug by sometimes changing to throw person view after dying.

    I don't feel like I've ever seen this bug. Rather, I may not know if I've ever experienced this bug since the other player would be invisible.

      It's very hard to know if you're on your own, as you can see, i only know because im in the party with the invisible players and their markers are still visible. Imagine how many players we're avoiding/not running into that we don't know about.

    Others just appear invisible.

    I've seen this happen while watching Star Citizen streams, though as an occasional solo player I have naturally not been aware of it personally. Generally when I've seen it, it's been a case of the streamer's ship ramming an invisible object such as a crashed ship or someone's invisible ship that is in their flight path. edit to add: I'm referring to them playing on the 3.18 PTU, of course.

    At 3.18 retake SPK mission. Could be a good example.
    Plenty of times our crew goes there to clear criminals and we dont find anyone.
    Maybe invisible to us and us invisible to them.

    I have seen it happen a few times while playing with a crew but we saw it as a typical star citizen moment. I find it less annoying than the "can't fire gun" bug in the middle of a bunker mission. Saying that, with the dangers of this bug it's kinda annoying especially when 3.18 will go live.

    It's possible that they never have the issue locally on their own servers, and just assume that it's a load problem on live servers. Their "fix" is just to wait for 4.0 with server meshing which allows them to pretty much customize how much load/how many servers to allocate per area, to have better performances server side for things like NPCs and other things (maybe this specific issue ? who knows)
    Either that, or it's a very hard bug to fix, but I don't thing they're blind. Most people know about this bug, we just work around it.

    Yep, I've experienced it multiple times both myself being invisible to others and others & their ships being invisible to me. I've contributed to several Issue Council reports on it as well. I agree that CIG really needs to fix it before they're through the Beta phase, better yet before they're through Alpha. Fortunately(?) that will be a very long time from now.

    this does need to be fixed for sure. one work around I found that fixes it is to have 2 players that can't see each, sit at a seat close to each other. it works best a station or planet landing zone. you need to sit in a seat or bench. it does work sometimes on the Carrack in the crew quarters. if the first 2 players can't see each other switch out the player that can see the most people. just a suggestion, again and you know this, bug work arounds very from group to group and player to player.

      What do you mean by "Switch out the player that can see the most people." ? Also, I like the idea of having two "you're invisible to me" players sitting down on seats or chairs near each other. That sounds like a great "let's see if we can figure this out" solution to the issue, something I actually love about the game. (testing what works in an alpha sandbox is extremely fun for me)

    Honestly having been playing pretty solidly for the last few years (3.14 got be locked in more than any time before that), and I have not seen this issue before. Very Strange indeed.

    i guess it's a bug so common everyone's just accepted it and assumed CIG can't fix it with out major updates as it's often associated with server stability. It would be nice for CIG to talk about it futher why they think it's happening and what needs to be done to fix it... or just fix it properly.

    I've encountered some similar as of January, with invisible characters and city props/vehicles. My encounters have been at MicroTech with the transit system, where the monorail, the tube & doors are missing and I usually wait for it to load.

    I play with a larger org, and some smaller ones, and I have seen this issue many times. For the longest time the fix was for the invisible player to sit in any seat and get back up. but in the last few patches it works less and less. When the new service beacon missions came out recently, we would see a lot of untargetable/invisible ships in those missions. The only fix was to power cycle the ship...not good to do when you just jumped into a combat zone. While we are at it...can we please get the cops to stop scanning us during fights?...lol

    You have a good take on it. I am wondering if desync is having an effect on ssocs. Maybe the magic tech to fix this will be the matching system CIG is working on. Just guessing of course. I do not have eyes on the code so that is the best I can offer. But as a developer I can say that intermittent bugs are hard to track down. The turret bug might offer incite or may be just another way to make one invisible.

    about a year ago this glitch was the bane of my existence since i mostly play multiplayer. however there are two thing that help a lot for when planning PvP events.
    1: no respawning in carracks or 890 jumps. this will help you avoid the glitch most of the time.
    2: if someone does become invisible they need to fly to an OM marker or another point of interest by themselves and fly back and it will reset their visibility for all of the others around them. if one of the players who can't see the invisible person flies out with them they will still be invisible to that person. to fix it the invisible player has to fly solo.

      Agreed these are good workarounds! However, invisibility csn be generated transitioning between grids... And there's no way for the invisible person to know they're invisible before the damage is done.

      @@DTOXTV interesting, i've only ever seen the invisibility come from respawning. i will say that avoiding ship respawning (and perhaps ship logging?) keeps you away from 95% of it.

      That's why in our battles nobody is allowed to come back after death. Everyone dies and we join a new server. That's the only way to avoid it.

      Unfortunately it has nothing to do with that. I always deleted my shaders. Since a few patches, however, a new shader folder is always created and the old ones are retained.

    I have been killed by an invisible dragonfly in a bounty hunting mission once. Definitely a good feature from CIG!
