    Cool I just bought and painted my first mini ever the other day watching your other building+paint videos, I made a mess with the white details but overall it was okay, i'm now gonna replicate your first color scheme of this video on my next intercessor (sadly just priming with abad. black with brush) but this time with a new set of brushes and a mini handle.

I realize that I normally pause, rewind etc many painting tutorial videos I watch to get a better understanding of the painters process and techniques but yours is presented in a unique way and I enjoy it. 👍and a subscription from me sir.

      A little late I know but just a heads up for anyone thinking about doing this, keep in mind the shoulder pad has a Ultramarines emblem molded into it (thank you this video for pointing that out to me almost made this same mistake)
      Not a huge deal but will disqualify the model from being any other chapter for serious events, just a though to keep in mind.
      If you’re just gonna mess around with friends, or you don’t care if your first 3 models can’t play in a serious event for your army then go for it.
      But just remember you’ll have to work around that emblem.

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety +2

      Something like a decent art store nylon brush like Taklon Golds are a good place to start. They are reasonably priced and serviceable.
      Other than the starter brush and the drybrushes from Citadel I don't have much experience with GW's brushes, so cannot say if they are good or bad. They are kinda available everywhere and I know a lot of people use them, but I have never heard people singing their praises.
      Reaper Miniatures makes a solid well priced line of both nylon and sable brushes that I definitely would recommend. They are what I started with.
      My goto currently are Rosemary & Co Series 33 brushes which are good quality but affordable sable brushes. Their major issue is that they are based in the UK so depending on where you are they may take a long time to ship.

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety

      This kit is the for the current edition, 9th. Are you referring to this style of marine, www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Space-Marine-Tactical-Squad-2020? Those are the older traditional pre-Primaris marines. They are still playable, but are significantly older sculpts and GW has been pushing the new Primaris marines via updated rules, etc.

  • @Numen06
    @Numen06 Před 3 lety +1

    Sorry for the noob question, but what is the purpose of basecoating with black, couldn't you just paint over the grey primer? Thanks!

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety +1

      The reason that we undercoat black is so that if there's any small crevices or things like that that we don't fully fill in with other base colors the black just appears as a dark shadow as opposed to a bright point in the shadow. Also a black undercoat means that as we build up our base colors we can be selective about where we put down a second layer to create some shadowing. Normally I would have just primed these black when painting this style, but the kit doesn't actually come with a primer of any sort so I wanted to show putting the black paint on something that looks like the model plastic like a gray primer instead of magically having a black model.

    What paint kit did you use? And did you just use the same paint brush the whole time?

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety

      I restricted my self to the paints from this kit, www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Space-Marines-Paint-Set-CA-2020, and I only used the starter brush from that kit. I highly recommend using a better brush if you have one, since the Citadel Starter brush doesn't hold a point well and generally isn't a good brush.

    Sorry if this is a stupid question but do you need to prime them ??

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety

      If you are planning on playing with them yes, otherwise the paint will tend to rub off from handling. I primed light grey and then painted the undercoat blackt, but something like GW's Chaos Black or another black primer would save you a step.

    How much time is necessary to Paint the second Cape of black ?

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety +1

      I am sort of unsure of what you are asking. I think you are asking about time between coats of black. Often by the time I have completed a coat I can start applying the second coat where I started the first coat, i.e. if I start at the head and work down to the feet, I can immediately start again at the head. If I have thinned my paint a bit more then normal or it is humid, I may have to wait a few minutes. You are wanting the first layer to be dry to the touch, I.e. when you apply more paint the initial layer isn't being moved by brush strokes.

  • @MutsuKazuma
    @MutsuKazuma Před 3 lety

    seems kinda useless to paint the whole model black if you didn't prime it in black, just paint the joints in black and save yourself some paint, the rest is not gonna be black anyway

    • @SleepyWhatsIt
      @SleepyWhatsIt  Před 3 lety +1

      In this case I primed light and undercoated black for slightly misguided pedalogical reasons, to show using two thinned coats for getting coverage. The final cut of the video didn't really make that point well and it probably just confuses people.
      For a project like this, like I said in the video, I would recommend priming black.
      Beyond that though I think there is a potential reason someone might paint this way. Specifically if they only have one colour of primer, that is not black. Given the overall dark tone of this paint scheme, I would probably still recommend undercoating black. Since this paint scheme is relative dark a black undercoat will hide minor mistakes in the base layers, where you didn't get complete coverage into the nooks and crannies. Dark over light primer can be particularly unforgiving in this regard, since any coverage issues will be bright white spots, often in areas that should be shadows.
