  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics to "The Pot" by Tool to discuss how we can use the song to recognize the hypocrisy of our inner critic (the negative voice in our own minds). Once we recognize that hypocrisy we can begin to discredit and fight against the voice.

    Maynard writes the lyrics after the music done. How incredible it must be for Danny, Justin, & Adam to compose a song sonically, only to be blown away by the time Maynard gives it a narrative?!?

    • @AtticsTV
      @AtticsTV Před 3 měsíci +9

      I know this has been a big thing shared on Tool reactions recently, and its awesome to see what Maynard does since his addition is always amazing... but this is actually an extremely common practice, especially in metal. You almost always have the vocalist write their parts after the song is done... then maybe the band does some tweaks after the vocal plans are made if they feel it would be an improvement.
      I DO think what is awesome about it is how seamless the Maynard parts fit the song to create an experimental experience that FEELS like it was written together. Definitely something mostly unique to Tool.

      is it something that unusual? i don't think musicians usually start composing a song, from an idea like "let's make a musical piece, and it will be about elephants and trains"
      i'd imagine it's usually about finding a catching melody, then building around that, and at the end writing some lyrics matching the vibe
      also add to the fact, that vocalists usually aren't main composers in the bands as far as i know

      He wrote this a out his manager and the fight they had in court to separate the band and it took ten years for them to finally win the music they wrote Maynard never put out his songs over the airwaves through Spotify and other others until he had the rights and the band holds the rights to all their music and they made their record company so they have full control of the music they create not only did Maynard fight but they won the battle ! During the ten year wait they created 10,000 days it came out the shows the growth of the band and it has growth written all over it 10,000 days was written about his mother Wings for Marie was a tribute to her battle she fought she lived 10,000 days after her stroke it's a beautiful to his mother.. After 10,000days was put out we waited 10years for them to put out Fear while they fought for the rights to their songs all the band holds the rights to every song they write its divided equally even though Maynard writes the lyrics after the music is done ... Genius.. my uncle was Tommy Tedesco he wrote and played guitar .. he wrote music that is legend in the industry look him up on you tube , anyway I'm rambling but to give insight to their songs you've got to be hardcore and dive into the meanings of their songs, Mayn ards other. Band is A Perfect Circle, they are genius in the industry , Maynard writes and sings this was his band he created to soothe his wait during the battle with the old manager , they fought for the rights to the songs they wrote , A perfect Circle was created ch😊eck them out sometime, you'll love the live album they did 13th step it's about the A A rule that's a un written rule you never date for the 2 years following your recovery after the 12 steps are done and unwritten rule is no dating another member of A A and have relationships while in recovery, the album is a tribute to the issues and the insight to people in recovery and their problems they fight .... He's genius Maynard is Genius .... Follow and research Tool they are essential in the industry and have created some awesome work ... 🙏😁💛💛💛💛❤️🧡😮❤️🍄🍄🍄To really get the right meaning of the songs you need to research them , then you'll understand Maynard min😅d a little more ..... Become a diehard fan like me and millions of others Tool is the blood that courses in my veins , it's amazing to 😮share this band the way you do , great work you've gotten the band down .... Try listening to the album Lateralis only then can you grasp the real genius Maynard is.... Remember the music was created with no words , Maynard listens to the music then writes the words... I'm hardcore Tool fan I fly to see them when their in Calif an😅d Nevada and Phoenix it's wild being a Toolie it's become a great part of my life it's my get away , when my head is full of the events of the days past it release s my neg energy a and thoughts , it's great therapy they twist and tug and they rise above them all , they even won Grammys for their work.. I'm rambling so I now will stop , you can see how I love them ... No words can I find to express the feeling they give you , that's the reason we love them so much they take your head and create energy and take you places you never thought you existed in them . Till Tool came out I was all over the board they cured me. They healed my head , itvwas a scary place I was in ,the n I heard Tool in 96 I've been a fan since ... They healed me ... The beautiful thing about Tool is that their songs can be interpreted at least a few different ways depending on the listener and where they are in their own personal growth. Tool, and Maynard James Keenan's other bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer have seen many of us through some very dark times in our lives. So, like others have already said, welcome to the rabbit hole.

    Love this woman's insight. How she can point certain things out and makes total sense. Think "Stinkfist" (desensitization, over stimulation) "The Grudge" name speaks for itself, consumed by holding grudges. "Pushit" (a abusive relationship) "Eulogy" (dealing with death) and "Prison Sex" ( becoming something that happened to you) would all be great listens for her and her analogy on it. Anything else I might have Missed or others have suggestions? Stay positive everyone, sending love your way ❤

I always heard the lyrics in amore literal 'hypocrisy of the judge, jury and prosecution to condemn someone for smoking pot when most likely all of them have done it too!' I was just going over dissonence in my DBT group. For some of us, we hold these thoughts in our mind that do not come from us, but are often values that were forced onto us at a young age, and as our own self awareness developed, we can often feel confused and not understand why.
    I hear the voice in my head, reminding me how little my own wants and desires matter, all while over-indulging in anything that makes me feel good; like, when you're in a group of friends, you're hungry, and the question gets asked what everyone wants, and where should we order from. I don't voice my opinion until no one else offers anything, then I INSIST that we order what I want. Feelings of guilt crop up and then I start to feel bad about myself for strongly expressing what I want.
    Also, I will feel strongly about how badly my friend is being treated by their spouse, and, after my friend cheated on her, my ethics tell me to insist they confess to her, or I will...but, then I don't, because I don't want to lose them as a friend.

      @Nick-hm2dm I have interpreted the song as MJK feeling that if put through the same condition as his mother went through he couldn't be as strong as she was. Also see it as a continuing second half to the song Jimmy.

    Please check out Bo Burnham "Can't handle this". He's a little different from your usual videos, but I think your take on it would be amazing.
    Bo uses musical comedy to express his MH struggles, but paradoxically his MH can be negatively affected by sharing the way he does. Can't handle this was a heart on sleeve goodbye to his fans before he took a 5 year break from performing live, to work on himself, and it lead to him having a panic attack while performing it. I don't think most people even realized he was having a panic attack, but for those of us who have experienced them, it could be considered one of the bravest performances of all time.

    yep, had something to do with legal dealings they had w/record label, lawyer, manager, entitlement, and judgements from a court. Basically, the suits were taking excessive amounts of money for art they didn't produce. As I understand it, "it" being the song and a rumor of an explanation.

      To expand on that line, cozen means to trick or deceive, especially to obtain through deceit, so “weeping shades of cozened indigo” means crying fake or “crocodile” tears. Using lemon juice was an old way, especially in older films, to make someone fake cry for a scene.

    “The song tells about the drug culture in the USA. Adam Jones (guitarist) confirmed it to be about hypocrisy and believing that someone is above others. The main targets of criticism are the church and the government.”
    I personally thought it was aimed at the church at first, but the lyric Gunja at the end usually refers to weed/pot/marijuana…
    All scenarios I agree with anyway… Tool is awesome 😊

  • @josephmay7233
    @josephmay7233 Před 4 měsíci +1

    What a great reaction, you really dive deep on the TOOL songs (the Schism reaction was awesome).I believe the song is more about the hypocrisy of our government and the people who create and uphold laws and Maynard uses the pre legalized marijuana laws dating from the 80's drug war in America where prisoners were (and still are) used for profit as his main topic. He is calling out lawyers, judges and politicians hypocrisy to sentence a man to years in prison while they themselves are some of the most corrupt people on the planet saying you must have been high to make/enforce these laws. The line at the end is why I think it's about marijuana, "Ganja...please... you must have been out your mind", I don't think Maynard smokes marijuana but it is obvious he doesn't like the hypocrisy of our government. You gave me a whole different view though with the inward hypocrite and now I have some reflecting to do tonight so thanks for that. Keep it up.

    Another Tool song with an incredibly positive message (or sort of a 'set' of songs - the first is the intro to the second) is Parabol / Parabola. The lyrics are simple in that one but really profound in terms of consciousness, the body, possibly Bardo, and how the three tie together. It's kind of similar to the lyrical theme of Pneuma but perhaps even more blunt.

    I think you might really like one of Maynard’s other bands called “A Perfect Circle”… I’d love to hear your thoughts on a song called Judith. It was named after his mother who suffered a cerebral aneurysm in 1976 which left her confined to a wheelchair. Her faith in a higher power never wavered, but this is his perspective being confounded by his mother’s persistence.
    Honestly I’d love to see how you take it. The band itself is amazing, but this song would be a good one for you to react to.

    Ænima
    From Salival: Pushit (live) and No Quarter (Led Zep cover)
    From Lateralus: The Grudge, The Patient, Parabol/Parabola and Ticks & Leeches
    From 10,000 Days: Jambi, Wings for Marie/10,000 Days, Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)/Rosetta Stoned and Right in Two
    From Fear Inoculum: Fear Inoculum, Pneuma, Invincible, Descending and 7empest.
