Therapist reacts to Vicarious by Tool

  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics to Vicarious by Tool to discuss the ways in which people often find enjoyment from the pain and suffering of others. The song discusses the reality that hostility toward others and toward ourselves often rises up within us and it's important to be cognizant of the ways we direct that hostility. We can direct it toward things that actually need to be destroyed.

If you “bop” to the tempo or “speed of the song” instead of the time signature the polyrhythms and how they fit together makes more sense, it’s the only way I’ve been able to play it properly and still know where the f I am in the song.

    Interesting personal experience and observation:
    Relating to this song:
When my second husband and I were happily married, we actually lost friends. However, when I was going through a terrible first marriage, I had way more “friends”.
I just couldn’t believe that these so called friends couldn’t be happy for us and maybe come away with a positive outlook that perhaps they would find happiness as well.
I lost my husband to cancer. I lost him way too soon. But I’m grateful that I got to have the short 11 years that we had. I learned so much from him.
    ❤❤

      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE Před 4 měsíci +3

This might be wrong, but maybe you lost friends because you two were happy... Happy to be with each other all the time. Happy to do everything together. You lost friends because you, in a sense, didn't need them... Your husband filled the role that certain friends filled, individually.
As I see it, that made him all the more spectacular of a person... and for that, I'm extremely sorry for your loss. 😔

It's everything she said, but in simpler terms its about how society literally gets off on other people's misery and tragedy, and now that social media and viral videos have taken the place of the very limited nightly news show or newspaper, that disconnection with reality and humanity has gone exponential.

He actually explained this during the Salival tour (if you will). The difference in hate and anger. Destructive and constructive behaviors. Anger is constructive because instead of fighting someone, he’s gonna create a song and sing his anger out. Hate would have him doing physical damage to himself and others. It’s also why he doesn’t scream much anymore. When he does, it’s extremely selective and has major purpose. What good does it do someone to continue to scream about the same things over and over? There is no growth. I digress. Your reaction video had me in tears. Thank you for that. The more people begin to hear the depth of Tool, the more free we become… I know that sounds weird, but some of us cannot afford therapy lol. Tool is exactly that. I like your breakdown. I would just add to what you said about the pain making us separate ourselves from others. The opposite of that instead would be feeling empathy or sadness with them. It should hurt us to see others suffering if we’re empathetic and in reality that it could also BE us in that same situation. It comes from the dark parts of us or maybe otherwise refers to one’s ego which is just that a “self” identity. Consciousness is universal. We are all connected expressions living personal experiences. Tool is very powerful music and deeply profound. He’s definitely influenced a lot from psychedelics. Most of the artworks for Tool are made by Alex Grey. It gets deeply spiritual into that idea of oneness and collective consciousness

Glad I found your channel, you add so much to the songs you listen to. Specially to those of substance like Tool has to offer. I also enjoyed your video with the lady that worked with Disturbed.
I look forward to more of your content (specially anything Maynard related hehe)

The song is about the nature of humanity. We feed the algorithm. We feed by tuning in to what the media is showing us. And it's inate. We are an animal that has always fed on tragedy. Overtaking each other. Fighting for the land. Money. Power. Etc...

I’ve received so much joy from watching you listen to Tool. It seems silly to say but they’ve pulled me from some of the darkest places I’ve been. That being said I’ll throw my two cents in. H. , jimmy, the Patient, and the wings for Marie 10,000 days (wings part 2) consistently have tears streaming down my face

My feeling about this song is that it describes the reaction to the numbing/enervating effect of alienation. The disconnection of modern life, living to work, leaves us starved for some form of emotional experience that we take from the most extreme source that is constantly presented to us (the unfolding human tragedy brought to you 24/7 by the news). Watching the pain of others to remind us what it is to be human.
I find myself doing it with reaction channels. Anyone watching Band of Brothers, you watch them react to Why We Fight, and you share an emotive response.

Her profession is basically understanding the mind and giving good advice on how to handle it without becoming depressed/homicidal/suicidal. Some people have seen some things, in person, that some of us have seen pictures of that we all know would be traumatic to see. Results of accidents, war, gangs, natural disasters, etc. that a person can't unsee. Our intelligence is both a curse and a gift.

This song has always meant to me, that there is a part in EVERYBODY that takes joy from others pain and suffering because it makes people feel better about themselves and their lives. I love Maynard for that because he'll pick at these topics and these mannerisms that people don't want to admit about themselves and act like they walk such a high road. Great pick on this one, I LOVE this song!

I've played in bands for like 20 years. Now it's just for fun, but I remember when I was in my 20's and we were an aspiring band along with other aspiring bands. When one of them would get a better gig than us, I would get very jealous because I thought we were better. It was almost like it was just one day out of the blue, but I was like, I like those guys and I refuse to be jealous of the success of someone I like. I decided I'll get my chance when the time is right and it made me much happier.

Wasn’t following at the beginning but you really took this in an interesting direction, good analysis, I think those things that ‘deserve’ to be destroyed are precisely those tendencies that are driving the divide between us deeper and isolating us from our own sense of being humane and caring because it can be scary and painful

Exactly why I spam 🎉 or some claps whenever someone has shared a positive thing on social media. Need to build it up over the negativity. And when someone is struggling, letting them know an internet stranger is sending good vibes, or keeping them in thought hopefully also raises positivity (if there isn't some direct help that can be provided, that's always the first check lol).

you have helped me view tool much differently than I used to. I used to think tool was just music that you'd listen to while tripping on acid but I've come to realize that its much deeper than that. the acid trip is just the journey that tool takes you on while you're tripping. what they're really trying to teach you is very deep emotional processing. I think coupling this way of thinking with the trip would be very eye opening.

Loved it. I will definitely say with Tool, the music video has its own meaning alongside some parallels with the lyrics but not always. Adam Jones, the guitarist usually has done the videos. From what I remember from an old interview, it's that he wants the music video to go alongside the music but not necessarily lyrically. It's why it all seems abstract when trying to tie it to Maynard's lyrics.

There's no joy. It feeds. And we never actually "care"...it doesn't press us, because we are entirely desensitized. It's a song about human nature and loneliness combined by the effect of mass media.

I think Maynard/Tool are asking us to examine these feelings within us and accepting them. Just because we accept them doesn't mean we have to act on them. But there is light and dark in all of us. Knowing that dark and acknowledging it is accepting where you are. Then you can examine where the feelings come from and know where there is work to do.
