Thank you all so, so much for your incredibly kind response to my first music reaction video! I sincerely appreciate all of you being so welcoming and helpful, providing background information, tips to improve, and suggestions for what I should listen to in the future! I will absolutely be doing some more reaction videos to additional Pentatonix pieces (as well as some of the other bands/songs you all suggested) very soon. Likely, I'll have something new at the beginning of the work week. This weekend is a super busy one in the fighting games community, and I'll be a bit pre-occupied with tournament stuff until then. I just wanted to thank you all again!

You are jumping into an extremely deep rabbit hole now. Between Pentatonix, Home Free, Voiceplay, Voctave, Peter Hollens (don't sweat it for now, but you will be introduced to all these folks on your journey should you choose to continue), they have posted over 800 cover and original songs on CZcams. PTX fans are branded Pentaholics, Home Free fans are Home Frys. All of these folks competed on NBC's The Sing Off that aired after The Voice on Tuesday nights between Seasons 2 and 4 (although sometimes with a different group.) You can get bio.s on the people on Wikipedia or search to find their official websites.
Other noteworthy groups are Natural 7, The Filharmonic, and Julia Westlin. Julia does a mix of instrumental and a Capella covers and originals.

Counter-tenor would be a male voice in the same range as an alto. Kirstin is a mezzo-soprano, which is in a lower range than a sopranista or a soprano (but higher than an alto or a counter-tenor). Scott is a high-baritone, because he has a better lower register than an actual tenor would have. I am commenting again because I really want people to understand this. The best sports teams play together for years before they become magic. The best actors work with the same directors and supporting actors before they become a team. Kirstie, Mitch, and Scott singing together for years allows them to not only match each others abilities but also anticipate each others moves. If you listen close they match each others vibrato! I want to be clear PTX did not happen over night, it is not just talent, it is years of hard work and dedication to the craft of music and a mutual respect for each other. Many things set this group apart but 2 very big factors are this. Mixed group: not all boys or girls (love you Kirstie please marry me Jeremy was a fool, anyways not important) Also, no divas (Sorry Mitch) but the real magic here is lack of ego. They love, respect, and listen to each other which allows the music to win. Not some individual's stuck up personality. Each person gets a moment to shine and when they colab with someone else they do everything to let their guest take the spotlight. This is a God given group. Never discount them never underestimate their abilities. Much love again J.

I would add that they give each other the time & encouragement to follow their own creative pathways, too. Kirstin did solo work & a stint on Broadway! Super Fruit w/Mitch & Scott, as well as each one doing collabs & solo work. Scott started AcaPop Kids (worth reacting to, BTW) and Avi started his A Capella Academy & works with high school and college vocal groups (which he still does & can be found on CZcams). Kevin is world class sax, cello, beatboxing, & now vocal. He also helped Scott's beat boxers in AcaPop. Not sure what Matt is into yet. So the all have & allow each other to follow those ambitions w/out leaving the group.. As long as PTX comes first! Perhaps the secret of over a decade of staying together! 💖

    Welcome to the Pentaholics.
Whatever music you want to listen to, PTX has options, so it's really up to you where you want to go. Fans of react videos usually like you to start off with the most recognizable covers - this one, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Amazing Grace, Mad World... and their Daft Punk mashup. Something about the combo of well-known songs and evenly split solos make for a good jumping off point.
On the other hand, if you lean toward a genre (classical, pop, R&B, rap, country, EDM... anything in between... ) or a particular member singing a lead, then there are plenty of options for each. Also whether you prefer studio produced like this one, in concert or greenroom-type live performances or the midway point (their evolution videos are one-take "live" sitting in a studio) there are recs for all of those. Even this song has a "live on TV" version that is just as good as this studio recording.
Coming from classical, you'd probably love their Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairy, which won them their second Grammy, in 2016. In 2015 the particular Grammy was renamed to Best Arrangement, Instrumental *Or A Capella* specifically so they could get the nomination (and first win) with Daft Punk. Their third Grammy was Best Country Group or Duo with Dolly Parton on a reworked version of Jolene.
On top of those, I recommend New Rules x Are You That Somebody (Dua Lipa/Aaliya mashup with the Timbaland beat) to introduce you to Matt Sallee who replaced Avi as the bass in 2017... and Kiiara's Gold for amazing Mitch, Kevin and Avi (give the original a cursory listen so you know what Mitch is slaying). They also have 2+ albums worth of originals, a ton of Christmas music and solo side projects. If you want to check out Mitch's high notes, he and Scott used to have a vlog called Superfruit and they did Defying Gravity from Wicked. Add in Kirstin and some drinking and you also have their Frozen medley on that channel. Serious craft, nothing near serious presentations.

Wow, thank you so much for all of this! I definitely would like to check out some of the more commonly known songs they've covered but I'd also be very curious to hear Dance of The Sugarplum Fairy! I think I'll need to listen to that one soon! And... confession... I've never seen Frozen, even though my sister's been bugging me to watch it for years. I should watch it and then I can listen to the medley and appreciate it better! lol

    • @perfectkismet
      @perfectkismet Před 3 lety +5

@@MollyBeeReacts Honestly, I've never watched Frozen, either. But I knew enough about the storyline and main songs from... wherever I picked them up... that I wasn't lost at all. Anyway, I only suggested it for the variety - Superfruit is a whole 'nother wonderful tangent that I personally love for reactors to do but it's generally better to wait until you're a little deeper into PTX, itself, unless they hit on a particular interest.
The other purely "instrumental" work PTX have out and about is a Star Wars tribute they "sang" with an orchestra at... the GMAs? Some awards show. I believe they got asked to do it because of The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy arrangement. I'm not a huge Star Wars geek, but it's hard not to respect that one. Since Kevin's beatboxing wasn't really necessary he ended up doing sound effects like a lightsabre battle through it.
Oh, and at one point Mitch said the highest note he's recorded in a song was in Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy... but I think he might have beat that since. It's still noteworthy.

I've read all the comments to this point and see that you have gotten recommendations to do all of their most popular and well known songs so I'll not bother with those. For some lesser known and I feel underappreciated songs, I like "Sing" (an original - about 42 million views) and "Come Along" (a cover by Cosmo Sheldrake - about 10 million views). These are more up tempo and what I refer to as "happy" songs because they always raise my spirits and make me feel good. Here’s a quick PTX review-
They won season 3 of the Sing-Off
Members are (in order of appearance):
Scott- tall blonde guy with amazing range tenor to bass. Has a soulful tone
Avi- beard and beanie.tenor to bass, more like ultra bass. Has blown out speakers before. Amicably left the group in 2017 but assisted in finding his replacement (Matt)
Kirsten- Mezzo Soprano, has a beautiful clear tone especially when she belts out the high notes; and she really can.
Mitch (round brim hat) counter tenor- he has a very angelic tone to his voice and can sing in the very high soprano range as well. Your reaction to his solo is a common reaction that is called “being Mitch-slapped”
Kevin-Beat-boxer, body-percussionist, tenor. Also plays the cello. Uber-talented. Will add to background vocals when not beat boxing. In recent videos, he’s starting to sing solo parts.
Matt-joined in 2017. Tenor/bass. Replaced Avi. Very soulful tone to his voice. Perfect replacement for Avi.
Now to get you started down the PENTATONIX rabbit hole:
    Amazing Grace (have tissues)
Daft Punk- they won a Grammy for this
    The sound of Silence

A brief introduction to Pentatonix (aka PTX):
A five member acapella (no instrument) group.
They sing covers of pop songs and have several Christmas albums in their catalog.
They've also put out two albums of original material, one just released February 12, 2021 (The Lucky Ones).
The original five band members were Scott, Kirstin (aka Kirstie), Mitch, Kevin and Avi.
Scott, Kirstin and Mitch knew each other from high school in Texas, USA. They formed the group in 2011, adding Avi (bass) and Kevin (beatboxer).
They auditioned, competed and won season 3 of the television show The Sing-Off.
They've also won multiple awards over the years including three Grammys.
While viewing PTX videos spanning a decade, it may appear that there has been several personel changes due to their ever-changing appearances, Kirstin and Mitch in particular. The fact is; only one member has changed.
Of the five original members, four are still in the group. Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced with Matt.
While performing as an acappella group since they formed, they occasionally introduce instruments such as piano (played by Scott) and cello (played by Kevin). They've also included vocals and instrumentals played by featured guests.
Most of their 'instrumental' sounds however, are created by Kevin, their very talented beatboxer along with baselines performed by Avi, Matt and Scott.
While performing together as a five-member group, they also have individual works worth investigating.
There's so much more information 'Penta-holics' can add to this list. Just ask and they will respond. Enjoy!

There are two ways to avoid copyright blocking on music video reactions. Either pause and give your thoughts as was suggested to you, OR putting some kind of effect on the video, like a blur, a color wash, light leak effects, or superimposing your channel logo over the top of it. You obviously did the right thing because the video didn't get blocked. And yes, if you do the pause, you should always go back 5 to 10 seconds to make sure you don't miss anything. And congratulations, you are the latest of many to get what we Pentaholics call "Mitch slapped" (aka The Mitch Effect) when you heard him sing the first time. This song was also my introduction to Pentatonix, and I've been hooked ever since. They've been together for ten years now and have changed the entire world of a cappella music. They have a mix of covers (some of us refer to their covers as UPGRADES), amazing originals and MANY Christmas songs (they do a new Christmas album every year). We Pentaholics love new reactors - especially when this is their first exposure and they hear Mitch for the first time. He is a high tenor (some call it counter tenor) and the look reactors get is sometimes called being "Mitch slapped". WE LOVE IT. Hope you do more Pentatonix. If you do (they have a catalog from 2011 to present), There has only been one change in the line up. The guy with the beanie and beard - Avi Kaplan, Bass - left in 2018. He was replaced full time by Matt Sallee, Bass, in 2018. Mitch Grasse, High Tenor and Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, Mezzo-soprano, both love to change their looks A LOT. Especially Mitch. So if you think there are more new members, it's just Mitch and Kirstie. The beatboxer is Kevin Olusola. He also plays the cello and sings tenor. He is AMAZING!! The last member is Scott Hoying, Baritone. He will cover the bass part when the bass has the solo line. All of them have HUGE vocal ranges so there are never any holes in the harmonies. That is part of their incredible sound. I believe all of them are also songwriters, so they have a pretty good collection of original music, both as the group and as individuals.

My second comment. PTX never does a song that They cannot reproduce live what was put out in the studio. I would now watch hallelujah live from a Christmas special Just so you can hear and compare the 2. Pentatonix isThe pinnacle of all acapella groups In my opinion. The gentleman in the beanie who's an original member left in 2017 on good terms for personal reasons and he helped find his replacement matt. Everyone else is the same. The gentleman in the hat Mitch frequently changes his look as does Kirstie, The pronunciation rhymes with thirsty. They Put out a Christmas album every year. They will upon occasion use instruments. The beat boxer Kevin u is a world class cello player. He even performed at Carnegie hall. Keep doing The reactions to Pentatonix and then once you're settled in with Then you can go with the individual groups and people who have solo careers.

They are truly amazing world class vocalists and all can sing. Mitch face!! it always happens when 1st hearing Mitch. Other songs??? Hundreds!! 3 Grammy's + 5 BILLION views..they are the KINGS of A Capella. I would suggest "Can you fell the Love tonight", then "Bohemian Rhapsody" or for Christmas music start "Mary Did You Know" and their unique spin on "Oh Come all Ye Faithful" these people are treasures. Pentaholics will come to watch and we understand the pausing, it's part of reaction vids. loved your response

I would also like to suggest their cover of "Shallow". You get to see Kevin's impressive talent as a cellist.

Loved your reaction! You're about to fall down the Pentatonix rabbit hole and you will not regret it. They've just celebrated their 10th Anniversary and I've been a Pentaholic since day one.
They've won 3 Grammys that you should definitely react to. 1) Daft Punk Medley. 2) Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. 3) Jolene with Dolly Parton.
I won't overwhelm you with the mega Playlist that PTX has. You'll be flooded pretty soon by the other Pentaholics. 😉

Glad you liked this so much!! You're awesome and I enjoyed this review a lot. The counter-tenor is named Mitch, and the first time people hear his voice they always have that reaction--some called it "Mitch-slapped." Subscribing!!!

Utterly brilliant reaction, I'm subscribing to see more PTX reactions. Welcome down the rabbit hole my friend. They haven't done a single bad song so I suspect you'll love them all - and you have 10 years of back catalogue to go through... with a large selection of Christmas albums! They do both covers and originals. You will very soon find a large amount of support from Pentaholics for your great Pentatonix reactions! I love the amount of detail you pay and how expressive you are! Your pauses are great and it's good to go back 10 seconds (press 'j' on a keyboard to do it automatically) after a pause so you don't miss anything.
You may think the members change - but the only change is the base, Avi (Ah-vee) left on good terms in 2017 and helped them find his replacement Matt - who is also truly awesome. Scott takes over the base line when either Avi or Matt are singing. There's a great beginner's guide to PTX video I recommend czcams.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/video.html
Please recommend to The Sound of Silence, Coffee in Bed, Amazing Grace, Radioactive, Daft Punk, Imagine, and Bohemian Rhapsody as great starting places for Pentatonix. I see that you've done a few reactions already since this was posted, I'm off to watch them now. Thank you! One last thing - headphones! Please, please use them, you will hear the difference straight away, thank you! :D

I must say for the 1st music reaction video, not only did you pick the perfect song, but your reaction to it was A++. As far as a recommendation, I would highly recommend the John LENNON cover of Imagine. Again, great reaction.
