Welcome to the world of Pentatonix (or PTX for short).
They cover pretty much every music style there is: pop, rock, r&b, electro, hip hop, rap, dubstep, country, classical etc.
The group is coming up on their 10th anniversary and have so far won 3 Grammys, had 2 #1 albums on the Billboard chart, multiplatinum selling albums, several world tours and much more.
You were mostly right about the members...
    Left to right:
    - Matt: bass singer, but will sometimes take the lead vocal (only member that wasn't part of the original lineup - the original bass singer Avi left in 2017 - on good terms)
    - Kirstin: mezzo-soprano, lead singer and backing vocals
    - Scott: baritone, but has a wide range, takes over the bass line when Matt/Avi sings lead (as seen in this video), lead singer and backing vocals
    - MItch: counter tenor (very high range for a male singer), lead singer and backing vocals
    - Kevin: beatboxer and tenor, he doesn't sing as often as the others because he's needed on percussion, so it's always a nice surprise when we get to hear his great voice
Most of the time they're 100% acapella, but there are a few tracks where they use instruments - you wll always see it in the music video though. (so if you don't see any instruments - there aren't any being used on the track)
A few recommendations: Daft Punk (medley that won them their first Grammy), Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Mad World, Coffee in Bed, Sing!, Can't Hold Us

  • @dangdang4334
    @dangdang4334 Před 3 lety +61

Here's a long info dump about Pentatonix since you're new to them
Scott, the tall blonde guy, Mitch, the shorter guy with darker hair, and Kirstin, the only woman, have been best friends since high school, where they did musical theatre and choir together.
In 2011, they joined a televised competition called "The Sing Off" and realized to have a real chance at winning, they needed to be more than a trio, in particular, they needed a bass singer and a beatboxer.
That's when they met Avi (not in this video) and Kevin, the Beatboxer on the right, Avi through a friend of a friend and Kevin through his own CZcams channel, on which he was already pretty famous for his "cello boxing" where he beat boxes and plays his cello, named Beyoncé at the same time,
Long story short they won the competition and got a record label deal with Sony, though Sony dropped them almost immediately afterwards because they thought acapella wouldn't sell well.
So then PTX began their journey on CZcams, racking up millions of views by covering many well known songs, as well as making their own awesome original music.
Their compilation/cover called Daft Punk, was one of their best songs ever as it won them their first Grammy! They've since won two more and have redefined the a cappella genre!
Things went like this all the way until 2017, when sadly, their bass singer Avi Kaplan, as mentioned earlier, had to leave the group because their fast paced touring lifestyle was too much for him and he wanted to spend more time with his family. So he left the group with no bad feelings and has since started an incredible solo music career. He also helped find the man that would take his place, Matt Sallee, who has been with this group ever since, the other 4 members have been together since the beginning.
Quick recap of each member and their role in the songs
Scott Hoying- tall blonde man, baritone, can sing high enough to match Mitch and Kirstin, but also can go low enough to cover the bass lines when Matt is singing a solo. He often appears to be the "lead singer" of the group because of his great versatility, though PTX constantly shifts the leaders of their songs according to which songs best fit which voices.
Mitch Grassi- short haired white guy, High Tenor. Mitch's voice is simply angelic, there's no other way to put it, many times he will have you thinking there has to be more than one woman singing, but it's actually his gorgeously high and light voice.
Kirstin Maldonado- the one woman, Soprano. Kirstin is a gourgeous woman who sings in an amazing high register and also sings well in songs that have her singing lower.
    Kevin Olusola- Beatboxer, Cellist, tenor.
Kevin is undoubtedly the most talented member of the group, in most of there songs, such as this one, he takes care of the rhythm/percussion section with his insane beatboxing talent, though he does have a gorgeous tenor voice that he has on occasion during songs with 5 part vocal harmonies and no beatboxing needed. Not only that, but he's also prolific at "cello boxing" a type of music he created by playing his cello (which he calls Beyoncé) and beatboxing simultaneously, he's done this in a handful of PTX songs too.
In addition the insane musical talent he shows with PTX, he also graduated from Yale with a pre-med degree and can speak at least 3 languages, one of which is Mandarin Chinese, fluently.
Avi Kaplan- bearded white guy, not in this video. Basso Profundo.
Avi was with the group from 2011-2017, and his bass was simple incredible, his rich, warm tones making your very soul seem to jump out of you when he sang, especially when he went waaaaaaay down into the subharmonic range of notes.
Matt Sallee- black guy in the white jacket with the epic bass drop with his voice, Lyric Bass.
Mat has been with the group since Avi's departure in 2017, the only member change, despite not hitting quite as low of notes as Avi could, he's quickly become beloved by PTX fans due to the energy and just total happiness he brings to all PTX performances, especially the live concerts, he seems like he's just there to have a good time while everyone else is just serious and focusing on performing lol.

One minor correction and a few additions. For The Sing Off they HAD to add the two newcomers. The show's rules mandated a minimum group size of 5. Kevin and Avi joined up with the other 3 for the first time the day before their audition. Also, Kevin can simulate brass instruments like the trumpet riffs he did on the TV show and Mitch simulated Brian May's guitar with just his voice. The megaphone he's holding in the Bohemian Rhapsody video is just a prop and wasn't even on. Plus one of their Grammy's is for doing a fully instrumental song a cappella, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Oh, and Mitch can both tenor and countertenor.

Thanks for doing this one!! I've always loved Simon & Garfunkel, and Disturbed slayed with their cover of this, so even as a Pentaholic I was nervous for them when this came out. I should have known to trust them - they always come through with something that honors the original but still puts their stamp on it.
PTX fans loooove watching reactors and getting to relive that awe of discovery vicariously :-) You did your job well, lol - thanks! I'll be looking forward to your next

Pentatonix and Home Free have rewritten the book on a cappela worldwide. Pentatonix has won 3 Grammys. They won one for the "Daft Punk Medely" (Daft Punk), Dance of the "Sugar Plum Fairy" (Tchaikovsky), and one for being Dolly Parton's backup band on "Jolene". You should also listen to "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen), "Imagine" (John Lennon), "Mad World" (Tears for Fears), and of course any of their Christmas music. For Home Free, you should listen to "Ring of Fire" (Johnny Cash), "Man of Constant Sorrow", "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills & Nash), "American Pie" (Don McLean), and of course any of their Christmas Music.

Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix. Glad that you enjoyed their cover song/video. They have hundreds of videos and songs of covers and original music. First singer is Scott. He is baritone and does bass when the bass is singing; Mitch is tenor, counter-tenor; Matt is bass; Kirstin is mezzo soprano; Kevin is beatboxer, tenor, cello player.

The three in the middle all met each other as kids so, yes, they had experience singing together. They recruited the original bass (not seen here) and beatboxer so they could go on the TV show, The Sing Off. (like Americas Got Talent but a cappella groups only).
The five of them met for the first time the day before the audition for the show. They had scheduling conflicts. They needed to complete their final exams in school. (One was graduating high school; another was graduating from Yale.)
They practiced as a group a few months until the show itself started. They were the season 3 winners.

It's fun watching pentatonix newbies react.
    When facing them
    Kevin - far right, beatboxer
Mitch - next to Kevin, tenor
Scott - center, natural baritone but he has a huge range
    Kirsten - mezzo soprano
Matt - far left, Bass but when he sings Scott handles the Bass line

  • @wilkvanburen
    @wilkvanburen Před 3 lety +5

So, the guy who sang first is Scott. He sings low baritone up to tenor and often sings lead on their songs. The 2nd guy is Mitch and he sings high tenor but can sing down to upper baritone. Kirstin is the female singer and the guy on the far left is Matt, their bass (though, as is the norm in this group, he has a crazy range and can sing bass up to low tenor). The beat-boxer is Kevin Olusola and though he doesn't sing solos very often with the group, he does occasionally sing a solo chord on backing vocals. He has a phenomenal voice as well and if you look at his looping videos under his name, he plays cello, keyboards, drums, beat-boxes, and sings all in the same video. Watch his cover of 'Down' by Marion Hill or 'Sign of the Times' by Harry Styles. As far as something out of this world, watch their cover of 'Amazing Grace - My Chains are Gone.'

Left to right: Matt Sallee, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, and Kevin Olusola. As you guessed it, one of Kevin’s many, many talents is beatboxing (he also plays the cello, saxophone, and piano, amongst other things). You pegged it pretty well. The three in the middle are often called "the Trio" and they sing the main harmonies in all the songs. They grew up together in Arlington, Texas and have known each other forever. They sang together in choir and musical theater for years before becoming professional. The end guys are bass (Matt, left) and beatboxing (Kevin, right). The trio added the bass (Avi, at the time) and beatboxer just before competing on the reality show "The Sing-Off". They won their season and launched their professional career. Avi bowed out of the group some years later and Matt came aboard, but that's been the only group change in the ten years or so they've been singing.

They have more than one person who can do the beat box stuff (it's one person's specialty, but at least one other person can also do it), just as they have more than one person who can hit bass notes, more than one person who can hit E above high C, and so on. They all five have a larger range of vocal capabilities than the average professional singer, let alone the average person on the street, and there are five of them, so there's enough overlap to create flexibility. Which is how they're able to trade the lead part all around: there's nobody who can't take the lead part because it would leave whatever they normally do completely uncovered. There's always somebody else who can slide into that slot for a minute.

  • @juliestevens6931

The 3 in the middle are "The Trio" who have been together since elementary/high school (Kirstie-sounds like thirsty, Scott-tall dude, and Mitch-mullet in one; changes look almost every video), the dude in the white jacket is their "new" bass Matt - he was the one humming the underlying bass support and Kevin was the guy on the right doing the amazing beat boxing. They all can sing AMAZINGLY well - even the beatboxer. Kevin also plays the cello AND beatboxes at the same time (celloboxing) in a few of their videos. They have been known to write their own music (Sing!, Run to You are my favorites). If you want to know more about their origins, check out The Sing-Off Season 3 (2011) which they won and it launched their career. They also have solo/side projects. Scott and Mitch have a channel call Superfruit which is quite different. :o)

Be aware. Several members have changed their look over the ten years. Mitch (high tenor) and Kirstin (Kirstie)are basically chameleons. Especially Mitch. The only personnel change was when original bass, Avi Kaplan, left in late 2017. He was replaced by Matt Sallee (white jacket here). The guy on the far right is Kevin Olusola. He’s a champion beat boxer. AND you’ll notice him singing on a few songs. He’s also a master cellist AND he speaks fluent Chinese. (Mandarin). Scott (tall blonde, first singer here) and Mitch (high counter tenor voice, [he DOES sing lower sometimes, showcasing his incredible range]) met when they were 10 years old. They met Kirstin (Kirstie, rhymes with “thirsty”) in high school (in Texas). The group formed to compete on NBC’s “The Sing-Off” (talent show for acapella groups). They WON that season, and the prize was a recording contract. They lost that contract quickly (the label said “acapella doesn’t sell”), so Pentatonix (aka PTX) hustled. They started a CZcams channel, won a Grammy for “Daft Punk Medley”- got another recording contract, and were off and running. You’re right. The sheer amount of TIME it takes for a group like PTX to arrange-rehearse-record-tour etc... is crazy insane. Kirstie said in a comment they have many many many 12 hour days. When they were looking for a new bass after Avi left, they wanted to make sure it was someone who could handle the enormous amount of work and time it takes to perfect their sound. They were choosy when they picked Matt--and three years later, they have no regrets with their choice. Also, they have no lead singer per se. each member is good enough that they can (and have!} taken the lead. Matt was great on “ You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch”! They do a lot of covers, and released an album of original songs on February 12, called “The Lucky Ones”. The lead song is an homage to how far they’ve come in ten years!
