This is a complete video series detailing exactly how to build a shed from beginning to end. It is presented so that even someone with little to no experience can tackle this project. The instruction teaches the IBC (International Building Code) rules that almost every jurisdiction in the United States follows, so you will be prepared if you need a permit. But in many cases a permit isn’t required for a shed under a certain size.
This project takes only basic tools to accomplish. If you have a circular saw, a drill, a level & a hammer, along with some basic hand tools, you can do this.
There are things that will make it quicker of course, such as a nailgun & compressor. But you can decide what level of tools are needed.
I’ve broken the video into digestible parts. This makes it easier to refer back to a specific section. Or, if you only happen to need instruction in one area, this will save you time, since you can just watch what you need.

When you calculated the rafter length (hypotenuse), you used 60” as the B side dimension of the triangle (half the span). When you assembled the trusses, you added an extra 1/2” piece on each side to simulate the siding thickness, making the total span 10’-1”, not 10’. Unless your shed deck width is 9’-11” and not 10’, the B side dimension used in your rafter length calculation should have been 60-1/2”, not 60”.
I'm building a backyard office/guest house and the explanation in this video on how to build rafters/trusses with the necessary math is the best I have seen on CZcams. Bravo!!!!

KFW Great video but you said that C is 69.5 but then once you measured you made a mark at 69.75. I know it’s just a quarter of an inch but I was wondering the reasoning for that?
This was great, I have been researching "how to build rafters for a 12x12 shed" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Beybigail Nonpareil Breakthrough - (search on google ) ? It is a great one of a kind product for discovering how to create better sheds and improve your woodworking minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my colleague got excellent success with it.

I taught carpentry at a vocational school and the algebra would have scared them to death. I taught every method from stepping off a foot of run at a time stepped off five times on your example shed.
Second method was the unit length method from the framing square and finally Pythagorean method. We made it fun and they were amazed when I could give them the length of the rafter in a few seconds. Strong motivation for the more advanced but always a simpler method for the less educated in math.
The most simple method of all would be to lay out the rafters directly on the floor and make allowances for the ridge and siding thickness
I am so grateful for you posting these videos. I have built my walls on my shed and now have come to the point where it's time to build my trusses. I was looking for a way to build my trusses to give me maximum headroom but still be strong enough to handle a significant snow load as I can't access my shed during the winter months. In my part of the world I can expect about 4 feet of snow. I decided I would install a tin roof so that the snow might slide off the roof in the spring. I originally planned a 4/12 pitch but having seen your 7/12 pitch I can see the advantage which hopefully will cause the snow to slide off. Even if the snow doesn't slide off I am more confident that the runoff in the spring will keep the extra weight from the water to minimize the extra weight
Pitch is simply a slope defined as number of inches of rise for every 12 inches of run. As in 3/12 pitch is 3 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run. Slope and pitch are one and the same just expressed in different units.

Your rafter layout explanation is the best I've ever seen!
Outstanding! When I built my shed, & made birdmouths, I winged it, (basically measured a 22° slope for it)tested it on my base floor, & then marked a center line on my shed floor, used that as my mark for the stud rafter cut (used a sliding angle for the ends)& measured down for the birdsmouth cut & then added 6” for the eave.

This vid saved my bacon! I bought a set of plans for my 4x6 generator shed and the dimensions for the rafters were wrong! I'm a total nube at this stuff so of course, I didn't discover that until I had cut and notched all the rafters, so that was eight 2x4s down the drain. Turns out I could have got all the rafter bits out of four 2x4s. Thanks for the vid. I learned a lot!

I just made some rafters for my 4/12 roof but I added a 2X4 for a ridge member but I wish I would have seen this before as now I need to add a filter for the 1 1/2" thickness of the ridge member so that the plywood will come to a peak. Your daughters do great work too.

Thanks for the math to determine the pitch and slope. I have often seen it done the way you created the form on the floor base and the measurements done right there to determine length and birdsmouth. 45 degree cut where they two thrusts meet. It's good to get the math behind it. Thanks for the share.

And, I notice that you teach at the university, as well. Another similarity here. I began my teaching career as a junior high Industrial Arts teacher. After 8 years, I was recruited to become Principal of a 6th-7th grade middle school. Then, I was recruited to join the faculty at Mississippi State University where I led the Instructional Technology program and developed the graduate program in Instructional Tech. I really miss my years in the classroom. Been retired for 19 years, but working as much as ever--writing books, public speaking, consulting, and the main job of just "fiddling around" in my garage shop. :-) Oh, and watching CZcams videos!

Best explanation for how to make a rafter that I have found on the internet. Only think I would add is if you're using a ridge board you need to subtract the ridge board thickness from the length of the rafter.
Fascinating stuff. Really enjoyed this episode. Thank goodness for speed squares :) The Rocks made me smile. I was part of a crew that built a 26Km road, At the end of the day, the 'Pet' would be brought to the end of the road. We could see how much dirt we had moved on that day :)

Very Good explanation of Pythagorean theorem, and using a speed square (probably the best I've seen). I however, cut my rafters using degrees on my 12" miter saw, it would be 30.5 degrees for a 7/12 pitch.
I’m actually building a 10 x 9 she’s as we speak and my walls are already up with floor and top plates. This video is clutch. I think I’ll use the exact same technique to build my trusses. Thank you for the effort and for aharing
