  • My engine is getting more noisy when it is cold. Is your 2021 MT-09 also noisy when it is cold?

    The latest generation 09 has a completely new camshaft. To reduce fuel consumption, the overlap (when both valves on the intake side and the exhaust side are open at the same time) is reduced by 30%. The cams on the camshaft now have a much steeper design to achieve this, which has resulted in some changes to the drive of the cam chain.
    A big difference is that the cam chain tensioner is now hydraulic and tightens when the oil pressure increases. This means that the engine at low revs (low oil pressure) feels a little muddier. Cold engine (sluggish oil) makes it hiss even more. The advantage is that the timing chain has good tension at high revs and low friction at low revs.
    The bottom line is that the new generation has a little more mechanical noise at low revs, but nothing to worry about.

    The same noise in my Tracer 9 2021 (on a cold engine of 45-80 degrees Celsius), first appeared at 200 km, before the oil change. After the oil change at 1000 km, the noise did not disappear. Greetings from Russia

  • @MT09Mike
    @MT09Mike Před 6 měsíci +2

    I bought a brand new MT09SP May 2023. From the first ride it made that noise, took it back next day, they said it was normal and being an unbalanced engine they all do that. I think the extent differs from bike to bike but not heard anyone with the issue say it’s goes on to blow up. It’s a pain as the actual triple engine sounds lovely, people say just enjoy it but does take away from the engine sound when you’re sat right on top of it.
    Anyway, I’ve learned to live with it, after market pipe helps drown it out somewhat.

    Cam chain tensioner. Much OK. Not a worry unless the ticking proceeds after warmup, in which case it has gone bad and you need a new one. My 2014 does the same thing for about the first 30 seconds. And I put 5k hard miles on its and it's just fine. I did replace my chain tensioner with a manual one from APE after learning about this issue. The stock tensioners have been known to go bad on the older models

    • @henrikhh
      @henrikhh  Před 3 lety

      The cam chain tensioner on the new model is using oilpressure, so the clicking goes away when reving it a little. The older models only has a spring tensioner. My previous 2019 still sounds great after 8000km :-)

  • @jackle3002
    @jackle3002 Před měsícem

    Ive got a 22 xsr900 with the exact same noises and can say that it’s absolutely not the timing chain. I’ve put a manual CCT in mine and the noise does not go away. My non-Yamaha mechanic says it’s actually transmission related and yes he’s well aware of the clutch basket noises (which fyi you can fix). He thinks my particular problem might be a bad bearing in the transmission. I have also been tracking an issue with Yamaha delivering them super lean for regulatory reasons.. they run them lean at idle and up to 3k range for the emissions tests. A good mechanic can get in and adjust the CO (carbon monoxide) settings and raise it to 10-14 which adds more fuel, reducing engine temps and improving low rpm performance. So many problems with this engine that need fixing!!

    Clicking noisy clutch on the right and rattling round the water pump on the left. Had mine a month and it started about 400 miles.
    Been back twice and Yamaha said it’s fine.

      I cam from a 2019 with no ticking, so the sound was a surprise, but after talking with Yamaha it is nothing to be worried about. The new model has a wider cam chain and another tensioner, who is activated by a spring and oilpressure, so as soone the engine revs a little, the clicking goes away :-)
      Hope you will get it soon - It is really a great bike!

    2016 xsr900, my tick started at roughly 25,000 miles. It doesn't always do it, but it seems to happen more often if it's a cooler day (I live in South Florida so that's still pretty warm). It ONLY does it for maybe a minute and seems to start when the engine coolant is around 120 degrees Fahrenheit. After about a minute it goes away. Scared the shit out of me the first time as I've had this bike ever since about 2000 miles and it never once did it, or if it did I couldn't hear it. About 50% of the time I have earplugs in and music going so it would be easy to miss. Bike seems perfectly fine otherwise, I guess I'll just keep riding it like it's normal until something happens. Oh I have full Arrow exhaust, but I can clearly hear the tick over the exhaust when it does happen. It's been happening for over 2000 miles now and it seems fine. I run Motul 7100 4t 10w-40 and a Mobile 1 oil filter since about 14,000mi and all seems well otherwise. Oil change interval is 5000mi.

    Mine is doing the same noise during warmup. It started after 1st oil change at about 920km. I did not rev it over 5k from 0 to 1000 and till 1600 not over 6k. I have 3700km on odo so I gues its normal. Maybe new oil is more viscous to withstand high revs and temperatures. It can get very hot when I abuse it.
    Another note is that during warmup on neutral when I rev it a bit till about 3k clicking noise disappears on idling. I guess it is engine feature. It will be hard to explain on resale though.

  • @frostflarez
    @frostflarez Před 3 lety +1

    i think its all down to oil type.
    I have done many rebuilds on all kinds of motorcycles, and with this bike i took a HARD break in, really pushing it to the limits.
    Did a oil change after first ride home from dealer (200km), note: this was done in one go, no stopping to let the engine cool down, pushed it hard and treated it as i had owned it for years for 200km till i got home. Oil was quite dirty, even after such a short milage. Put in new oil and filter, but this time it was mineral (conventional). Bike never had this ticking sound with that oil in it during warmups.
    When i went in for first service (1000km), it was excactly 0 Celcius (32F), grass had frost on it and no ticking during warmup so it isnt because of ambient temps. Delivered the bike with 1200km, got it back with new oil, filter, etc. Today i warmed it up for the first time after oil change (19C/66F) and it had this tick, nothing to worry about though. I guess they add synthethic oil which is thinner than mineral (conventional) oil, so maybe the thinner oil makes a difference on clearances in the engine.
    if it bothers you i would maybe try change to mineral, but i honestly dont think it matters if it ticks a little or not. Your engine wont explode, thats for sure. just engine parts heating up till clearences/oil is right tempereatures.

    • @JamesWilson-lg7bx

      @frostflarez Před 2 lety +1

      @@JamesWilson-lg7bx Here in Norway you wont get anything EXCEPT synthethic oils wheng going to workshop, unless you tell them to fill conventional.
      But yamaha dealer will fill the oil that yamaha recomends for the engine, which will be some yamalube synthethic. They will fill this, because its their own lube and they make more money using, than buying some other oil.

      The gen3 model use same camshaft tensioner as the R1, so oilpressure has to build up before enough tension makes the clicking goes away.

    The day i got my bike 2 weeks ago, i noticed (knocking sound) came from right side of my engine... I guese it got something to do with the clutch system, the sound will disappear when i pull clutch lever, is that normal?

    • @henrikhh
      @henrikhh  Před 2 lety

      I had a 2018 model before who had a noisy clutch, but the new model is using cam tensioner who works with the oil pressure, so they are a bit clicking when engine is cold.

      yamaha synonyms with tensioner issue most of their bike sooner or later will face this kine of problem, even my MT07 started to making noise @ 10k mileage, my new 2021MT09(v3) suspected to have clutch issue and need to send back to factory for futher action.

    • @henrikhh

      The cam shaft tensioner uses oilpressure in the 2021 model, so revving the engine builds up the pressure, and the clicking goes away. So nothing to worry about..
