"Comfortably Numb" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd from their eleventh album, The Wall (1979). It was released as a single in 1980, with "Hey You" as the B-side. The music was composed by guitarist David Gilmour. The lyrics were written by bassist Roger Waters.
"Comfortably Numb" is one of Pink Floyd's most well-known songs, notable for its two guitar solos. In 2004, it was ranked number 314 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It was re-ranked number 321 in 2010, and re-ranked number 179 in 2021. In 2005, it became the last song ever performed by Waters, Gilmour, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason together. An early version was included on the 2012 Wall "Immersion Box Set". The song was covered by Scissor Sisters with a radically different arrangement, which was a UK top ten hit.
Pink Floyd are an English rock band formed in London in 1965. Gaining an early following as one of the first British psychedelic groups, they were distinguished by their extended compositions, sonic experimentation, philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows. They became a leading band of the progressive rock genre, cited by some as the greatest progressive rock band of all time.

[Intro]
[Verse 1: Roger Waters]
Hello? (Hello, hello, hello)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone home?
Come on (Come on, come on), now
I hear you're feeling down
Well, I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax (Relax, relax, relax)
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?
[Pre-Chorus 1: David Gilmour]
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
[Chorus: David Gilmour]
I have become comfortably numb
[Guitar Solo 1]
[Chorus: David Gilmour]
I have become comfortably numb
[Verse 2: Roger Waters]
Okay (Okay, okay, okay)
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up? (Stand up, stand up)
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on, it's time to go
[Pre-Chorus 2: David Gilmour]
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look, but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, the dream is gone
[Chorus: David Gilmour]
I have become comfortably numb
[Guitar Solo 2]

I had a kidney transplant last year and my Dad died 6 months later. I played Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here at his funeral. Comfortably Numb is my coping song for everything
Same. My dad died in 2018 and everytime Wish you were here comes on the radio I ball. This is my coping song as well. Pink Flloyd is my go to.
❤
I’m so sorry
@@jessicayong4146 Thank you
My cousin was in a coma in a military hospital with a bullet in his head. I sang this and every Pink Floyd song to him until he came back from the coma. He said he followed my voice through fog until he found me. The power of music.
❤❤
I was comatose for three days when I was a teenager from a truck accident. My mom said on the third day I barely woke up and asked her “if she wanted me to be with her or them.” I don’t remember that, but this song always made me think of that. It came out several years after my accident. One night on a drive home I repeated this song about a dozen times and cried profusely.
❤️❤️❤️
Semper Fi homie, 1st Gulf War vet here. 🖤✊🏻
God bless you
The depth of this song depends on where you’re on your journey in life and never misses a beat to meet you right there. This song changes with you……ages with you……….grows with you.
❤❤
W🖤W‼️👌❣️👍
You got that right, I’m coming full circle, this song describes effect immediately …
It sure does
Well said
After a major brain operation I started to listen to this music again, took me back to my early years and made me think about life in a new way.
Now I am 70 I have overcome some difficult times and their music always helps me get me through. So powerful and thought provoking.
So many awful things going on in the world, we all need to slow down and think more.
❤️
My daughter went missing four years ago, and that is exactly how I feel. I had to become numb to the world to continue living.
Im so so sorry for you 😢
my heart bleeds for you.
Wow 😮😢 I have no words, I have 2 daughters myself and I could only imagine how you feel, I'm so sorry
Hugs.
I'm so sorry mate, i need to be stronger in fighting the sick in this world. I'm so sorry, I couldn't imagine your pain. I have two daughters and a son raise them like tough little buggers. What your going through is my greatest fear.
One of Pink Floyds most underrated songs
Comfortably Numb is hardly underrated.
One word. Masterpiece.
True 🖤
🖤🖤
This song has always been bittersweet to me. It was the song on the radio as my dad brought out last dog to be put down. It was also the song on the radio during one of the peak moments of my life. It's tough to describe how it makes me feel @alley9
This Song has a Different application at 61 than when I was 17. Man at the time gone.
I hear you, I feel like I'm 20. But I'm 60 now. This song has different meaning depending on where you are in life!
I'm might be young but I'm right there with you. Well younger
Literally just had that exact same thought. My dad always played this and drilled it into my head that this was the song he wanted at his funeral. Well, thirty something odd years later, no funeral and it’s a whole new meaning than, dad’s death march🙄 this and silent lucidity. Ruined them for years for me.
At age 65, I have become comfortably numb to many things in life.
One of The Most Calming Songs I Ever,Ever Heard, and One of The Greatest Guitar Solos Ever, by One of The Greatest Bands Ever The Mighty Pink Floyd!!👍👍👍
Hell yes, my friend! GIlmour has the biggest, balls-iest tone out of any guitar player on the planet. PERIOD.
Ayos!
One of the most beautiful guitar solos of all time is in this unforgettable classic, this song is also very beautiful.
I believed that if Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Paganini, et al. were somehow given a preview of this future of music, and other Pink Floyd masterpieces, they would wholeheartedly approve.
No they would have thought this was crap
No, they would have been blown away
Epic!!!
Et …. Would have thought it was normal. The more numb you are makes it that much easier for ET’s to manipulate your mind
Also believe Meatloaf embraced all of that. Nothing but great music! Be safe!
This song was introduced by my big brother.... Bt nw he is gone... Everytime I listn this song... It fel so... Deeply lov u brother
Rest in peace ❤
My older brother introduced me to this song as well. He’s still here though . I love him . God bless
Pink Floyd songs are open for personal interpretation, meaning, feeling, and emotion. So very powerful
Well said and it always means everything for everyone.
My interpretation is this...think of an EMT/paramedic singing this to a patient on an ambulance, those in the trade...once you hear it you'll know
Well, that's just not true. It is not free floating random words. They have intention. In this instance, it tells a specific story with character, plot, conflict.
@@johnpatmos1722 I challenge you to turn your brain off and just feel it. No need to diagnose. Subliminal everything with Pink Floyd ✌️🤟🎶
@@JohnFriedel-ex2xb Man, you are just too cool! I've never tried that!
I lost a cousin today, a wonderful person, a good loving dad; he fought a long anguish battle against his own body, until the last breath he held his wife's hand. I could only come to this song, only Pink Floyd could ease my feelings.
Fuck cancer
Rest in peace ❤❤
fuck cancer
I am so very sorry for your loss. I agree. Fuck cancer. I lost my mom to cancer not long ago, as well as many other loved ones and I am damned tired of it. Pink Floyd's music soothes my soul, although I can't really explain why. This song is also my go to when I am feeling blue and out of sorts. May your cousin rest in peace.
@@judi9665 thank you for your message, it was so very kind. I hope your mommy is resting in heaven, at peace; the thought that consoles me the most is that at least my cousin is not in pain anymore. There's something about Pink Floyd, i sent this link to my cousin's son and he replied with a link to High Hopes, only Pink Floyd can make you feel less alone in the despair
Hope your pain eases soon♡
I’m sorry for your loss….I lost my mama to cancer 6 months ago yesterday….I turned 48 exactly 48 hours later…..like u said FUCK CANCER!!!!!
I lost my mom .😢 fuck cancer
One of THE, if not THE best guitar solos of all time ! David Gilmour is DEFINITELY on my Mt. Rushmore of guitarists 🎸
@user-sg6ot3sc7e this is an amazing solo, but there are a few i think beat it
- Bohemian Rhapsody guitar solo
- Sweet Child O' Mine intro
And the elephant in the room:
- f r e e b i r d
Best rock band ever!

Absolut richtig !
Led zeppelin
I have been a Pink Floyd fan since 1975
This song was on the radio as my dad took his last dog to be put down.
It still makes him tear up.
This is nearly 25 years later.
Rest in peace ❤❤
I was a ludapata for 3 years in my life, whenever I came home alone, depressed and immersed in misery I listened to that song and cried non-stop, now I listen to this song and I remember that stage of my life that was difficult but I have already overcome it and remains in memories with this song
To me, this song is about heroin. I was an addict for 10 years. 10 years clean now.
For anybody going through anything that seems impossible in life right now, you are stronger than what you think. Don't give up.
🙌🏼
Congratulations bro! Thanks for sharing ❤
Congrats. Thats what I think of when hearing this song. I'm almost 10 years off heroin too. Started at 14. There were times I thought I was done, but of course I was kidding myself. One day I woke up and knew I was done. When you know you're done, you're done. Not many addicts or even recovering addicts understand me when I talk about that "done" feeling.
@@-dfh-866 Yep. If you know, you know. Congratulations 👌🏼. Keep up the good work. You know as well as I do it's worth it!
@@alley9 TY👋🏼
Well done . Long road isn't it . Stay strong, stay humble xx

I’m with u
With you
I'm joining ya too ❤
U are not alone ❤
This music helped me to survive it gave me and I suppose many people hope to go on in life.
❤❤
Fits my mood today but I’m not quite numb enough yet. I still feel.
❤❤
I know we all have different perspectives of life and mostly depending on how our current experiences are treating us.
With that being said.
I sit here outside, it's 2:30 am.
I leaned back in my chair after I feel it travel down my neck and I think to myself "comfortably numb"
Then I look up this song and pay attention to the lyrics which, I never really cared to analyze and even tho I'm numb. I can still feel. & I don't want to keep feeling this way.
It's been a cycle if 3 years and idk if I'll win. But I want too.
Life is complex and music is the best thing I have.
I love life and everyone around me. I just don't love myself and my accomplishments. But I want too, one day.
Sorry for the inconvenience of reading this downer even tho the guidelines told me not to be one. Lol
I just had to vent this out.
Long live Rock 🤟
Don't worry bro, I hear you. Take care!
Some lyrics hit you differently. 🙏❤
Just pure genius
I long to become comfortably numb Damn long hard road this has been.
Same here. My best days are comfortably numb without drugs
My most favourite of Pink Floyd,!!!!!!!
good taste! ❤❤
The beauty of this song is that eventhough I know what is it about BUT each one of us connect with it differently ! For me it was always my refuge and place to be when i am feeling down and depressed and wanna be away from everyone. I am a fan of Pink Floyd since 1986!
I would put my headphones on and play this everynight to fall asleep in afghan
❤❤
This is something you feel, not listen to. Pink Floyd was my dads favourite band. In later live I know you used to this song so much. RIP dad I miss you so much
Rest in peace ❤
I have loved this song since I first heard it many years ago but these past few years…this is the theme song! I went through so much with my health and I just detached from reality, myself, everything was like this odd dream I couldn’t wake up from! And even now there’s times I feel like I’m in a fog and I’m just numb and I don’t know how to find my way back to myself. I can’t even explain it! It’s very lonely even in a crowd! I have become comfortably numb!
I'm there now... so many of us and we can't even find each other...
We're two bro, I understand that perfectly, still trying to feel like myself. I think the way is to connect with our true selves. One day we “wake up” and felt the emptiness, like a big "that’s not it”. Go for it, find yourself.
I guess you just put into words exactly how I feel, and didn't know how to say it, I thank you SO much. It's far better to be comfortably numb than to go through all of the pain and agony that has sucked the life out of me for most of my life. It shouldn't be too much longer, and all of it will finally fade away......
First time actually listening carefully to this song. Now I get why Al loved this Pink Floyd album.
When I'm happy and sad I just think of pink floyd.. especially this song
Being the happiest you can possibly be is what matters. The dominoe effect sucks. Full stop just being thankful for everything good in your life and everyday is a blessing not everyone gets the chance and it hurts. Cherish everything and everyone good in your life as tomorrows not promised. Be grateful
730 prayers to ya all ...big word have faith in god..
2024 good luck humanity
Exactly
Not a lot of faith in humanity... but... best to you May 2024 ... Peace
We need more than luck...
When I was young, before I heard this song, I had dreams that my hands were like balloons. Really made me like the lyrics...
Sometimes We Are Expericized And After Repeated Abuse We Become Comfortably Numb We Lose Our Composer Respect Thoughts Feelings Hopes Dreams Desires And Wishes We Are Comfortable Numb A society Of lost Soles And Have No Hope To recover
Listened to this song while falling asleep for surgery I was 12. The staff enjoyed it .
Still here in 2024
❤
Just laid my husband to rest to this song, it was one of his favourites 😢

Happy birthday David. Know that people love you. Xxxxxxxx
I recently have gotten in to Pink Floyd. I knew about them growing up but never really paid much attention to their music. Then just recently i had an eye appt. and decided to listen to them on the drive there and have been lostening almost every day since. I like the calmnes of their music.
Best song everrr!
Обожаю тебя, старина Роджер, за музыку и жизненную позицию! Здоровья и музыки! ❤
I had an ectopic pregnancy, was rushed into emergency surgery in the middle of the night, I nearly bled to death internally. I woke up hours later in the ICU. There was a nurse pushing morphine into my IV. This song describes exactly how I felt. It was the closest I ever came to death.
Happy you are alive ❤

@@patriciamays8244 sorry to hear that. My experience was different than yours.

Unless you are listening to it on repeat on hard times you are a real pink floyd fun
His fender Strat fuzz and delay sounds huge on this solo
This is one of the most calmest and amazing songs I've ever heard, why didn't my family play this song growing up, I heard Another Brick In the Wall, and Learning To Fly, the singing the guitar playing, it is incredible, I want to try to pick up a guitar and try to play this it's just incredible. I was a huge fan as a kid of Another Brick In the Wall because I hated school , and Learning To Fly was another gem just like this wonderful song to me.
THANK YOU FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG! I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN! HAVE A GOOD NIGHT!
