  • The RoK produces some of the best rations in the world. In terms of palatability, utility, and overall toughness in the field, they are right up there with the leading countries in pre-packaged shelf stable food. In this review we first check out the new version of their retort pouch field ration, with it's advanced pull string activated FRH and it's own tray. Then we move over to the old freeze dried version, which was built to last. Both are a real food adventure, so have your snacks ready because otherwise you'll likely to get pretty hungry while watching.
Huge thanks to Matt & Elizabeth stationed out in South Korea for making the 2015 one happen. And to John who serves in the Army - he sent me a second one and it made this review much easier in terms of studying and understanding the ration.

Hi Steve! I am a RoK army Corporal Stationed at South Sudan, Africa as a part of UN mission. We still eat exact same ration you just ate. They never fixed the cardboard tray issue. Probably cuz to lowering down the production coast? But the cardboard tray isn't a big of a problem. Real problem is it gets old really quickly cuz we only have 2or 3 menus unlike US MREs. That is a real problem when we have a long period drill or operation.

Glad to see that Steve now shares the same (hopefully) experience with me and my fellow soldiers from back then. It really has nostalgic value for me. Long gone are the days we were young. I served from 2002-06. I am a US Marine.
I went to Iraq 3 times.
Some of the MREs I ate would have Skittles or M&Ms candy in them that were advertising for the Olympic Games.....in Barcelona.......in 1988.
We were "encouraged" to eat only the main meal pouches.
Good thing was is that we could eat as many as we wanted. We had so many boxes of MREs that we could use them as sandbags or shielding from IEDs in transport vehicles.
A box of MREs makes a nice field expedient seat.
This abundance gave birth to the practice and term called "rat fucking".
For instance I would take a case of MREs and open the ones I wanted to make different larger meals and get the better accessories.
Take the spaghetti and mix it with chicken cavatelli, jalapeno cheese. Take chicken noodle stew and mix it with chicken vegetable tetrazzini and crushed crackers with tabasco over rice.
You could just take all the case A menu number 9s you wanted and eat a pile of beef stew.
      That one was my favorite.

The way nations feed their soldiers is always so overlooked, when it's such a key part of gaining insight to understanding in part how the men are treated overall, amenities, morale, funding, combat readiness, etc. It's such a basic thing that many don't pay attention to, like a little vertical slice into military life.

Treatment, including meals, of Korean soldiers still have a lot to improve on, but it did improve a lot. But yet another trainee accident happened just last month :( At least, the public is adamantly aware and caring about the treatment of soldiers here. Kinda happens when every family usually has someone serving or still has to serve. Just finished my reserve two years ago.

I had the same 1993 MRE in 2003 when I was serving Korean army, I believe it still produces. We have 2 types of MREs
Immediate eating ones and freeze-drying Bibimbaps, just like MREs that Steve ate on this video. Each types have 3 menues. The only difference is the freeze one included tofu, egg or bean paste soup. Korean army does not paying much money for that. Because they are not gonna send their troops off shore and they have very limitted warzone. So if war starts again with NK and all their troops are go into field, they make filed kitchens on specific locations with its troops field camp by operation plan 5027 and supply hot meals for their soldiers.

    • @moblepolice
      @moblepolice Před 2 lety +16

Oh, it is questionable whether the Korean Army, where I am currently serving, will properly implement the field cooking that I pointed out during the war. Personally, I am a Company Supply Officer. Field catering vehicle? They still don't replace the old stuff from the early 90's. I have requested replacement 3 times. When I was first assigned to the position, I was bewildered because there was no data related to the plan to supply drinking water for one company in case of an operational situation. So I remember it was very difficult to make a new plan. Not all Korean military units are like this, but from my experience, I'm worried about whether the supply of drinking water will be properly implemented right away rather than food or ammunition if a war breaks out.

Steve is a good dude and leads by example. That's all that's required for most people to behave and not act a fool. For the person running the show to set a good example. You'll generally find CZcams comment sections follow this rule with very few exceptions. Almost makes you wonder what the world would look like if we could stop electing the biggest weirdos on earth to political office. 😂

For the older type 2 mre, you brought up a good point. During the winter, when we had those in training, sometimes it would get cold or even freeze if left unattended, so we would put it in our clothing or put bunch of it together and wrap it up with something so that it can cook (rehydrate) and stay warm.
Also, we used to put spam, ham, cheese, or whatever else we had in it to make it taste better

South Korea makes high quality goods. The weight to calorie ratio of the newer one is a bit heavy but probably has loads of protein, with all the meat products. It appears that it doesn't need to be as calorie dense as a US mre, because the soldier will eat all of it. American MREs need to be calorie dense because unless you get one of the really good ones, your probably not going to eat everything. I know a lot of guys would bust into a few and make a MRE 'repack' of the best stuff to eat with the best parts of a standard mre. This was especially true when you knew you were going to be out for a couple of days.
