Those skinny enough challenges are tragic to look at... those poor girls. Vice News did a piece on that same girl a few months ago, it's so sad because she feels pressured by Chinese society to be so skinny. Also Bom is ALWAYS beautiful, she should feel that way all the time, I know sometimes it's very hard to see yourself positively but even when you don't see it, it's still there and you're still beautiful. ❤️❤️

I'm glad they brought up that there are different standards for those in entertainment vs ordinary people. There's a problem when people hold themselves to the standards of models and idols, because those people work out and diet diligently for work. A normal person does not need to do all that to achieve success.
And yes it is a problem that celebrities go to extreme measures for their appearances, but I'm just saying it's even more absurd when you aren't on camera.

    • @allenk6373
      @allenk6373 Před rokem

      To be honest
Looking at any idol and I never see anything really impressive
Ok girls idols are skinny but I know personally girls that are personal trainers that look way better
Guys idols are only little bit muscular
To be honest if we consider Korean genetics and metabolism
You don’t need to do much to maintain that
      If you Korean or Asian
So I believe that when idols talking about their
“Brutal” regime ( like navy seals don’t train that hard 😹😹) they are just lying a lot

    • @hanjis5894
      @hanjis5894 Před rokem +1

@@allenk6373 i think the trouble with idols is that close to debut they are expected to lose weight really fast. Idols have said that they’d be weighed weekly and expected to show a certain amount of change- but that’s not easy for everyone’s body. So thats where the extreme dieting comes in. Even if Asian people are generally slimmer than others, not everyone can lose large amounts on a strict timetable. For some the expectations are so unreasonable they have to just starve themselves to reach goals. Being Korean does not automatically mean you’re gonna be skinny.

@@evaristedudas7250True. But the US does have it's fair share of anorexia problems. Especially seen that in college with some of the girls I knew who'd complain and say they were feeling fat, and so they'd stop eating all together for days just surviving on snacks. No real meals, no meats, maybe some small amounts of fruit.
      That's not healthy either.

Health officials like Doctors know how the human body should work. Listen to their recommendations on how to eat healthy. Self control is a good practice. Exercise and activity can be helpful. Don't let societies beauty standards be your standards or you will be controlled by others. Have your own standards that align more with a Doctor/Health official's stance on what a healthy human body weight to height is versus what people might consider attractive in one society but not another. Modeling is a very tough career because they have a skewed view of what "beauty" is compared to the average person in society. They make normal healthy looking women seem overweight when in reality they are far from overweight.

As someone that has had an ED (and doesn't feel triggered anymore) it's sad to know that people still think they need to be skinny to be accepted. Everyone's probably heard this a million times already, but your bodies are perfect the way they are. Your body is what keeps you alive and it needs fuel (food) to keep it going. I know that every person that skips meals and days of eating is extremely tired and barely has enough energy to get up in the morning. They are not happy and can't enjoy the things they love because they do have that energy that is needed.
Love yourself, you deserve it xoxo Cleo

Are you Happy and/or Comfortable? without hesitation ALWAYS say yes. so you mentally know and feel that way. so what if you gain like 1lb/0.4kg its would called happy weight just make sure you do daily exercises if you do become anxious. Which in my case, I can't be lower than 130lbs because of all the medication I take everyday. So I have to keep my weight up even if I want to lose weight. Which I should keep in mind since I gained too much weight.

You have to be so so careful, as long as you are healthy no problem but you should get at least a body fat test every so often and weighed too. If its too stressful to get weighed then let some one do it while you keep your eyes closed and let them keep a record. Someone you can trust. And be VERY careful especially of other girls who may try to mess with you by saying "oh did you gain a little weight? You look a little heavier today" because they are jealous of you. I worry a little about "Twig Queen" with a nic name like that you kind of back yourself into a corner. Also I've seen you before in another video and I'm just a little nervous. You need a good friend who can look at you and tell you if you are going too far, you can't do it yourself. If you look in a mirror you will always look the same. Honestly if I could talk you out of all this I would, but I know I can't so PLEASE be careful and get a good friend to keep an eye on you.

This societal pressure to be very thin is not prevalent or the majority. If you ask many Korean people about those girls, they would say that they have to add weight. However, the girls themselves can't hear those voices but only hear the rare voices that tell them to lose weight. Hence, the view of people that Korea has such a toxic body issue problem. Tbh, taesang's thought process is more common in Korea regarding body weight.

    These beauty standards are insane!
When Bom said she felt like she looked fat on camera I was surprised, she is beautiful the way she looks and I thought she was very skinny already but she still looks healthy. mabey she has an eating disorder or she compare herself with those are even skinnier who look like they are sick 😯
I have watched alot of kdrama and listened to kpop for over 10 years and I have always noticed how skinny they all are.
And during the last years I have learned alot more about the modeling/ acting and music industry and to be able to get a job they have to have "perfect" bodies.
The surgeries they do to change their face and their bodies because of the high expectations are crazy. People who already are skinny wants to get even more skinnier and take away as much fat as possible from example their legs, And the eating habits must be bad when they are able to be that skinny or they work out alot and eat healthy.
But the industry is so unhealthy, and I don't understand why they still have these beauty standards in South Korea. It's damaging and will give people eating disorders just to keep a job. 🥺

Trying to look good on camera is kind of a trap
You actually need to be skinnier than you are to look the same way on camera
That's why most idols actually weight less than what you would think by looking at their pictures
The trap is that a lot of people (especially girls) tend to think they need to weight as much as the idol in order to have the same looking body. On camera yes you probably will but that's not the case in real life, you actually need to weight more than them to look the same

Not eating is all in your head and is a serious condition. Bom and Twig queen also knows that, they could even eat above 2000 callories for the whole week and not gain any weight they will just think they did.

That's why i went to the doctor to scan my whole body. Fat, muscle and other things proportion. There was I suprised when my doctor said that my body already have 75kg of pure muscle. So I started to build up more and more muscle to have something what can burn the remaining fat away. I hope that will work. I want to feel good in my shape and be healthy.

Who came up with these challenges? We men do like women to be skinny but not skinny like a mummy.

I feel really sad that this industry has compelled people to be "skinny enough" to hide their waist behind A4 paper...

Everyone needs some fat. If you have 0% fat, you are probably dead.
Body fat percentage is a more accurate measure of "fatness" for health than a visual inspection. Just eyeballing it can be misleading, since everyone has different skeletal structure and muscles through lifestyle, training, and personal health considerations. But even body fat % is not a perfect measure, either. As they said, being healthy in mind and body is more important than forcing yourself to look like someone else (even if social pressure to conform can be very stressful).
For body fat percentage we all have a different sweet spot of mental, physical, and emotional health. Media tends to shoot several points below what is natural or healthy, which distorts our cognitive bias through frequency.
The best thing you can do, as they all said in the video, is to find your own (healthy) standards. Different sources will vary in numbers, but approximately 25-30% is normal for women, 20-25% is a fairly fit level (and VERY approximately where many people think women look attractive, but remember this still varies a lot, so do not follow this number rigidly!), and 15-20% is considered athletic, slim, or even skinny for women. Health and functions start to break down in the low % range.
Importantly, this has NOTHING to do with the person's weight. Someone could be 42 kg yet unhealthy-fat, or 70 kg and athletic-skinny. Understand your body first, and don't try to force a 70 kg body into an unrealistic 45 kg ideal.
Even professional bodybuilders still keep fat on. Health studies say that men should never go below 2% (which is an insanely low level for any human), and women should not go below 10%, to stay healthy. In competition season, bodybuilders will drop to about 7-10% body fat. This is not sustainable for any long period, so most of the year they will maintain a healthy fat level at 9-13%. (these numbers are for men -- women should probably add 3-8%, to align with the general fitness approximate values from above)
One of my students is a professional body builder, and he says that he can feel himself becoming stupid from lack of energy, water, and nutrition when he prepares for a contest or show. He only has the mental energy to barely keep up his gym workout, go home, and stare at the TV. It's easy to get irritable and yell at anything that bothers him. At that point, he usually measures his body fat around 6-8%. But he says that it is a constant, hard uphill fight. 12-15% would be much easier to sustain and at that level he feels much more active and able to do other sports like wrestling and martial arts that require dynamic physical and mental effort. (again, probably need to add several % points for women)
Asians tend to have less of a cultural reflex for exercise (as the girls often joke in these videos), but just a tiny bit of muscle tone can 1) help burn off unwanted fat (higher basal metabolic rate as well as more muscle to consume energy from fat) and 2) create definition that enhances aesthetic lines and curves so that you don't NEED to starve yourself out of that extra 1% fat. I think younger Asians (at least Asian-Americans I know) value exercise more than older Asians, but there's still a lot of misconception and lack of priority for even basic fitness. Even in the US, a lot of women think that ANY exercise will suddenly make them puff up like a bodybuilder, so they never pick up weights heavier than 1-2 kg. That's a whole different topic, but TLDR is no, you won't if you don't have testosterone. It's totally fine to work with light weights (2-5 kg or even more for larger muscle groups like legs), or just do bodyweight calisthenics. This is another big topic to not get into in this comment alone, so don't take any part of this comment as being 100% accurate.
All that said, I'm a guy, and I know that I don't have to live every day with the kind of social pressures that women face from EVERYONE -- even other women -- for unrealistic beauty standards. I'm not saying it's easy, or just don't succumb to it. I just hope that this gives a context to understand what is healthy or reasonable, so that if you do pursue some beauty standard, you will learn what is a healthy target for your own body that you can be happy with.

While this is a problem, the bigger problem is that many overweight people don't think they are overweight and tell others who are at a healthy weight that they are too skinny. That's why obesity has become a global epidemic and is the number one cause of health related problems and death.
