Lyrics:
You should've been there
Should've burst through the door
With that ‘baby, I'm right here’ smile
And it would've felt like
A million little shining stars had just aligned
And I would've been so happy
Christmas lights glisten
I've got my eye on the door
Just waiting for you to walk in
But the time is ticking
People ask me how I've been
As I comb back through my memory
How you said you'd be here
You said you'd be here
And it was like slow motion
Standing there in my party dress
In red lipstick
With no one to impress
And they're all laughing
As I'm looking around the room
But there was one thing missing
And that was the moment I knew
And the hours pass by
Now I just wanna be alone
But your close friends always seem to know
When there's something really wrong
So they follow me down the hall
And there in the bathroom
I try not to fall apart
And the sinking feeling starts
As I say hopelessly
“He said he'd be here…”
And it was like slow motion
Standing there in my party dress
In red lipstick
With no one to impress
And they're all laughing
And asking me about you
But there was one thing missing
And that was the moment I knew
What do you say when tears are streaming down your face
in front of everyone you know?
And what do you do when the one who means the most to you
is the one who didn't show…?
You should've been here
And I would've been so happy
And it was like slow motion
Standing there in my party dress
In red lipstick
With no one to impress
And they're all standing around me, singing
Happy birthday to you
But there was one thing missing
And that was the moment I knew
Oh, I knew
You called me later
And said, “I'm sorry I didn't make it”
And I said, “I'm sorry, too”
And that was the moment I knew

Unpopular Opinion: This song has same level of pain just like All too well because we all know it tackled the same man who hurt her that turned out to be one of the inspiration of her RED album 😭
Yep… came here right after the 10 minute version.
YES! Everyone is like “it’s just a birthday party it’s not that deep” but this was the last straw. Like everything else was going down and this was the final time it really sunk in that it was over and this is what CAUSED the feelings and everything in all too well. This was a birthday party but it really represents the MOMENT she realized everything
Trueeee. After all too well 10 min, i came here after
Ikr??? 😭
Exactly
This song would be so aesthetically cinematic for a music video
Manifesting a music video!!!!
RIGHT‼️
It was already shown in the “All Too Well Short film” The birthday scene. This is just an elaboration of that specific scene.
manifesting!!!
Since the first time I heard this song, I could always see how the music video would like. Like in the 10 minute version of All too well when she says she’s crying in a bathroom, that’s how I pictured it
Being treated as an Option instead of a Priority is one of the worst realizations one can go through. Having to have this reveal itself on a birthday, let alone a milestone birthday, has got to be so incredibly gut wrenching.
@espie OFFICIAL CZcams Channel in the name of being honest
And her 21st birthday that guy deserves the worst
1k th likeee, I have been there, i cried so hard😭
Same thing happened to me on my 21st birthday actually
realizing people you knew over a decade and considered "friends" never really learned your birthday, man
The lyrics of “The Moment I Knew” and the 10 minute version of “All Too Well” is super connected. I just really have goosebumps now from realizing it. Taylor Swift is really a genius. Glad I stanned the right person ❤️
Yep! They talk about the same birthday
And then listening to 22 afterwards 😭
even in the film where FL is in a party wearing black dress & red lipstick and kinda looking around but didn't see ML
Omg- you're right-time to cry- T_T
They said it’s suppose to be fun turning 21
2:55 THE BRIDGE GETS ME EVERY TIME
“what do you do when the one who means the most to you is the one who didn’t show”😭😭
Goosebumps every time
Heartbreaking
True
Happens to me but just in school.
Also the line “with no one to impress” hit different
Definitely one of the most heartbreaking songs she has ever written
Exactly
this along with champagne problems
@@444m1ahh Hoax too
@@shivanih8918 I love those two songs so much, also one of the other saddest songs she's written is my tears ricochet
And Last Kiss
Funny how so many people just ignore the fact that All Too Well (the 10 min version), 22 and The Moment I Knew together narrate an incident so precisely. In ATW, she says that her Lover never showed up to her 21st birthday, and could be a sequel to this song. Taylor probably was feeling under the weather during the party, because we have the line "You who charmed my dad with self effacing jokes, sipping coffee like you're on a late night show, then he watched me watch the front door all night willing you to come, and he said it's supposed to be fun, turning 21." In TMIK, Taylor sings about how everyone turned up at her party, but her lover, and basically how she felt that day. She even explained this song in interview about how her lover didn't turn show up at her party and that they broke up after that night. This is where she inserts Begin Again, which is all about healing from a heartbreak and finding love. She describes how happy the new person made her feel, unlike the previous one. 22 comes into the story, how she felt the need to make it up for her previous birthday. It is about her not depending on anyone else for her satisfaction and is about getting ready for the next chapter of her life. HER MIND.
Thank you! Love detective swfties love u :3
Then 'I Bet You Think About Me' would be the final chapter as taylor already forget him and move on with her life became much happier and she knew that her ex still think about her and regretting
QUEEN for a reason yk
@@cefrinaldi8060umm she never moved on😂 she really loved jake.
I’m 25, married and happy and Taylor is the only one who can take me back to when I was 13 and dreaming to have a boyfriend, make me realize how naive I was at 15, make me cry some more and almost give up on love at 20 and now at 25 imagining a character in my head that keeps breaking my heart while my loving husband is next to me cracking up about how dramatic I am because Taylor’s songs digs through my heart and soul like no other
Same here!
Glad u found love tho

Years later, and this song still hits like a brick to the face, THIS SONG IS SO UNDERRATED
I can feel you.
SOOOOOO UNDERRATED
Yes!!! I did not expect all the feelings that came rushing back after all this time 😭😭
"Like a brick to the face" yes that's the feel.
EXACLTY!!!!
What hurts the most is that This horrible experience could have been avoided if he didn’t lack communication skills. A simple phone call or text would have alleviated some of the disappointment but nooo he didn’t even attempt to give her a heads up which highlights how little he was thinking of her happiness… this hurts
I know after the film why it hurt more cause they were already breaking down and she thought atleast he'll show up here on her birthday but he just called later to say oh sorry lol
And I think that's the moment she knew.
And the fact that they have years of age differences.. He really could've been a better man.
I love the song references in these replies
Precisely.
@That Nerdy girl Tarini chemistry and compatibility are the exact same thing
"But your close friends always seem to know when there's something really wrong, so they follow me down the hall". Those lyrics are so underrated, and they always get me, like even HIS FRIENDS showed up for her birthday, yet he didn't. So sad. 😢
I think she meant her close friends
@@friendlyneigborhoodbean she deffo says ‘But your close friends’ which is why it’s so devastating 😢
She is actually specifically talking about Anne Hathaway who had done a film with him. She followed Taylor to the bathroom because she could tell she was upset. She comforted Taylor. Even though she was there as his friend
i think thats not during her birthday. thats the party shes singing about in atwtmv@@Alslilgirl
And it’s connected to the crying in the bathroom “some actress asking me what happened… you… that’s what happened. You.” From all too well. This song is so connected it’s amazing
this song just feels like “ you’re gonna cry while youre dancing”
“And they’re all laughing as I’m looking around the room. But there was one thing missing, and that’s the moment I knew” hits me hard. It’s exactly how I felt when my parents didn’t show up to my high school graduation back in 2018. I kept looking around the room watching people laugh, take pictures with families, hoping mine would show up. But they never did. This line has just always hit me the hardest since then because it’s just exactly what I felt. They should’ve been there. I haven’t seen my parents in 4 years.
I am so sorry love sending hugs❤❤❤
Sending lots of love to you
I think about my dad too when I listened to this song. Everytime. It broke my heart.
That's tough...hugs for you.
this is so sad im so sorry if we were friends in high school i woulda walked up and took some selfies with you and my parents probably would have joined in thier just like that lol
sending love
What makes Taylor's songs so relatable is her amazing storytelling ability. Each song is a story that people are drawn to.
Exactly.
I loved the way she sings the chorus in this version with the words "motion", "lipstick", "laughing" for so long. It feels like it's in slow motion
This song is extremely underrated and I’d like to make petition to have a music video for this song.
Where do I sign?
I have the full script in my mind ahahah
I’ve been saying this for years!!
consider this my signature
I mean I'd love to see it but when Red first came out, she said this was a really hard song for her and her friends and family because they were all there that day... I'd love to have a music video but I wouldn't want her to spend any more time on this one in particular
Okay, but when I heard that line “”…it’s supposed to be fun… Turning 21”” in the All Too Well 10 min. version MY HEART SHATTERED and it brought me here.
Yes!!!! Same!!! Can't wait to watch the shirt film. What a roller coaster ride. I get it now!!!
That was the line that made me understand The Moment I Knew fully!
SAME SAME SAMEEE
SAAAAAME it hit like a punch in my stomach
I was also reminded by this song after hearing it. Ahahha
All too well: "He watched me watch the front door all night willing you to come, and he said it's supposed to be fun turning 21."
The moment I knew: "They're all standing around me signing happy birthday to you, but there was one thing missing."
In both songs she's talking about her ex who couldn't show up on her birthday
@@alejandrafuentes1316 *Wouldn't
The way Jake Gyllehaal behaved with his lover in Love & other drugs and now this..😫
Not you bringing in Anne Hathaway 😂😂
Taylor going 'I'm sorry too and that was the moment I knew' breaks me every time because it's her realizing that this relationship is toxic as she's apologizing for something that's not even her fault.
It breaks me because it’s her being sorry that reality and fate couldn’t be different. That this one thing couldn’t happen. That she would have to run away from him because he couldn’t be a “better man”
No I cried because it feels like she's sorry because she known better what is supposed to happen that time but she still trust him that he will come. And she's sorry that she's in pain because she already knew that he is not a better man. As what she said in All Too Well, she remember everything all too well.
She feels guilty for letting her fall in such a toxic relationship. That’s why she wrote I knew you were trouble
I agree with all of you😭😭😭😭😭

She is *the one* the world has been waiting for (it’s been waiting for you) for billions of years - it finally came on a Wednesday, 13th of December, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania
this song with taylor's matured vocals is ten times more beautiful and heartbreaking
LITERALLY
Cheese matures, you didn't need the d at the end.
@@DaviniaHill grammatically, "matured" is fine due to the comment implying a comparison to the original version. That being said, her voice has matured greatly since 2011.
*In that one birthday scene of the All too well short film “and it’s suppose to be fun turning 21”* 🎂💔
*i love that she referenced this song (not explicitly) iykyk*
This song isn't just about your significant other who didn't show up on your special day. It's about someone special who promised but wasn't there for you in your hard times.
The fact that she added "But when he watched me watch the front door all night willing you to come", just makes this song feel so much like story-telling, because it's a direct continuation from that night.
We've all had that moment of realising "oh, it's over over". This song hits me like a million darts to the heart, and I love it.
The way this was not just about his mere absence in her birthday party--this was her last straw. Everything was falling apart. She was willing him to come like, "Tell me you're coming, that this isn't the end." But he didn't come, and in that moment she knew.
This song broke my heart. I miss my dad so much. This song painted the perfect picture of everything I felt. Like waiting for him to walk through the door, drive my family and I around during Christmas to look at houses decorated with Christmas lights, wishing he was there for my graduations and final prom where I finally looked like the princess he'd always call me, and through the biggest hardship I'd ever faced. I miss him so much
I love how people can have different interpretations of this song
the way she refrenced this in all too well omg
This song is one of her most gutwrenching songs and it's painfully stunning and for that it will always be a favorite
Knowing that this was about her birthday and Jake didn't show up just makes it more painful especially this line: *"what do you do when the one who means the most to you is the one who didn't show?"* 🥲😭
dang didnt know that. my grade for being a swiftie is 80% only. lol But I felt the pain when I first heard this song
Or in "All Too Well" when the lyrics are "Its supposed to be fun turning twenty-one"
I used to have a friend this happened to. It hurt to see.
"I've got my eye on the door just waiting for you to walk in but the time is ticking. People ask me how I've been
As I comb back through my memory,
how you said you'd be here" this part really hits me because it reminds me of my 16th birthday when not one person out of the 30 I invited came to my birthday and I was left alone with a birthday cake and a venue my parents helped me rent. Anyway they took me back home and I had my cake with my parents while I saw on snapchat stories that my 'friends' met up on my birthday without telling me to party somewhere else. Later they all messaged me they are sorry that something came up last minute and I erased them from my life after that and completely shut them all out. And that was the moment I knew.
This reminds me of my high school “friends” because they would always plan birthday parties for me but never followed through. Or something similar to you as well where I planned a friend outing to a nearby restaurant to celebrate my birthday after school since we had the week off (my birthday is on thanksgiving week) and somehow no one showed up because during the break they all “forgot” to ask permission. Took me years to realize how wrong I was with thinking they were real friends
I am so sorry you experienced that. You deserved better.
I don’t understand how people can be so cruel and selfish. It’s crazy. Imagine prioritising your image in the group over your friend who’s booked a venue and a whole party. It’s awful. I’m so sorry that anything like that ever happened to you or to anyone. It’s the kind of thing that makes me sickeningly angry at/ disappointed in people
I am so sorry. this feeling of something missing , maybe a friend, or even parents, tear our heart apart . But with the same time where we count anxietly the minutes waiting for them to come around, we can heal our hearts and sew it, with pacience
I pray you found yourself some real friends!! You deserve much better than them! ❤️🙏🏻
Despite the context of this song, how sad and scary is that most relationships have a specific point where everything just stops and ends, and even worse, you’re aware of it.
“what do you say when tears are streaming down your face, in front of everyone you know? and what do you do when the one who means the most to you is the one who didn’t show?” the music industry, everyone 😭🥂
I’ve been relating to this song recently so I’m glad I can listen to it on repeat and give the money to the artist who created it.
The amount of heartbreak that this song gives me is beyond reason, but we have our own moment we knew.
“what do you say when tears are streaming down your face in front of everyone you know?” is somehow one of her saddest lyrics of all time but everyone can relate to that in a way. that’s why this song is an underrated masterpiece.
Based on the 10 minute version of All Too Well, this was also the moment Taylor's dad knew Jake was a d*uche

It’s incredible how Taylor Swift makes almost songs like stories

this is criminally underrated. definitely needs more recognition.
I will say I really liked the beat on this song, I can't pinpoint what instrument comes in it is very deep and has base. I was picturing a cello but I honestly don't know what a cello sounds like maybe it's deepest cord. But the song has this weight and when that base comes in so heavy also it is almost enough to overwhelm you. I mean if the lyrics still sting I have been year and years since feeling like I wouldn't get over my ex for years.

First time hearing this song and All To Well. Didn't know the back story because I don't care about celebrity gossip. That aside, the lyrics to both are very sad, honest, & relatable. They didn't make me so much think about her & Jake, but about my own similar situations I've been through in life & how deep that pain can be, but also how that pain can manifest into powerful ways of expression. She really is a great artist.
Que afortunado eres, de que esta sea la primer versión que escuches 🥺
100% agree
That's what she wants as an artist. She doesn't want other people targeting who they think the song is about, she just hopes other people can enjoy what she's trying to convey and can apply it to their own situations.
Same here and it's my First time hearing this song and All Too Well
Yes, she is! Taylor is the music industry! She pours all the emotion into her songs! It's her outlet and everyone relate to every lyrics of it.

This was once underrated but now with Taylor's matured voice, it brings a whole different level of pain and meaning
If All Too Well was a television series, then The Moment I Knew is one of its episodes.
This clicks a lot better in my head weirdly now that I'm older and listen to her music more. My husband shares a birthday with Taylor Swift and this just... hits different. I'm glad I could be the woman who held birthday parties for him and creating our own lil traditions. I'm glad I can be the someone who he can cuddle with on his birthday, on our couch, next to the Christmas tree and just... breathe steady. The someone who showed up, no matter what. December 13th
I love how you unknowingly referenced one of her new songs
this song was always so underrated & with Taylor's version, I hope it'll get the hype it deserves!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The emotion of this song is heart-wrenching but at the same time I am overwhelmed with the happiness of knowing Liz Huett returned to do the backing vocals for this one.

It's shattering.

This song is criminally underrated.
That last chorus just had me feeling so many indescribable feelings. It's such a powerful and beautiful song.
Just when I thought I couldn't love this song any more. And her background vocal at 2:20 is such a beautiful addition!
It's really difficult to keep a listener's attention for even the length of a full song and here goes Taylor making millions of people show up for her with every release. Even re-releases!! A real boss move.
Technically it is but it isn't, she is now singing these albums to own the rights to her music, and also she is now singing them with a more mature voice plus the songs from the vault that didn't get to be on her original. So they are not quite an original re-release, they need to find a different word for it.
Why have you copy pasted this on all her songs
IM SHAKING. CRYING AND THROWING UP. MISS TAYLOR SWIFT FINALLY OWNS RED.
i was a TMIK stan ever since like forever and it still amazes me even now how she incorporated the phrase 'happy birthday to you' in a devastating context with this gut wrenching feeling. i really loved that she placed this big reveal at the last chorus like it just stabs you right into your heart for a thousand times and you can feel nothing but sorry for her even though this happenstance was years ago.
What I really, really love about this song, but particularly this version, is how inevitable the heartbreak feels. Every element of the song feels bent toward that end and it displays a mastery of the craft that I feel is beyond words.

@@emogoesboom She's sorry he didn't make it. Him not going was the last straw, the final thread of the relationship broke. She's saying sorry not in an apologetic way more in a "Yeah, I'm sorry you didn't come too because now I know I'm not a priority to you"
@@friendlyneigborhoodbean omg thank you!!
@@emogoesboom No problem. Taylor uses sorry in different ways a lot. It's a southern thing. They don't just use sorry in one way
