You mean before the 1990s. In the 1980s there was still some industrial activity left. In any case I object to the characterisation of Bilbao as a "black and dirty" hole. Us bilbainos used to be proud of that black dust that covered our magnificent 19th century architecture, as a result of all the economic activity that made the city so prosperous, and the region an immigration hub for people from poorer, more rural parts of Spain. That dark patina it was the symbol of our industrial prowess.
Bilbao may look much prettier now, but I won't have dissing my old Bilbao either. 😊

En Bilbao hay un ambiente nocturno espectacular,no es nada dificil salir el viernes y no aparecer en casa hasta el domingo a la tarde.
Prueba a hacer una gaupasa por la zona de marcha, por ejemplo Pozas, Urquijo.. y luego nos dices si es una ciudad sin vida
