Another great well informative video by master craftsman Tom and among the things I like about his videos is that he gives you the insight of what he is trying to accomplish.
The sound was very low and had to put the volume way up to listen to what Tom was saying.
    Thank you
    AJ

Thanks AJ, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it, and it’s nice to know you enjoy my “style”. I guess I naturally present in the way I would like others to explain things to me. So we must be a lot alike in that way! 👍😎

Hey Tom, it’s me again😄. Just going through some older videos and am trying to refine my sharpening skills which are as dull as a few of my rusty old Stanley chisels! There’s a million options for stones and set ups especially on Amazon. Is there a particular “basic” kit or brand you’d recommend? So far I have in mind the flat diamond stone as well as a few of the white stones. No problem if your too busy and I know you get a ton of these kind of questions. Thanks for this helpful video. It’s the little details and tricks that set you apart from a lot of stuff out there.

Hey, That’s a complicated question to answer these days. It appears there’s been a glut of cheaply made imported sharpening stones recently posted to Amazon. You have to be careful with these as they may look good in the photos and have high star ratings (dubious I believe), but are poor stones. Many seem to be of such low quality the grit marked on them does not reflect the actual stone grit and they actually can dull rather than sharpen your tools.
Better to have a couple higher quality stones. King brand is at the lower end of nicer quality, while other brands like Norton, Suehero, Shapton, Ohishi are higher end.
Having a diamond plate is good for fast more course cuts, and also a combination water stone is my second choice. I have heard good things about the Shapton ceramic stones but have not tried them. Finish honing on a finer stone of 6 - 8000 grit is good. Hope that helps! 👍

@@EpicWoodworking Thank you Tom for the helpful response. I know what you mean about the quality. The most common question on Amazon is always “was it made in Ch**a?” They (and other countries) are good at making things appear better than they are. I always feel a little silly asking someone like you for this kind of advice as you have more important things to deal with. Really appreciate making yourself available to so many aspiring woodworkers! Still enjoying going through a number of your past videos. All are fun and super informative.

Tom i know this is a couple of years old, but I noticed that you do not use a secondary bevel on your plane iron. So does that mean you only do a 25 degree bevel and that is it?
