- The past simple tense - English grammar lesson.
In this English lesson we learn how to create sentences in the past tense in English. We look at affirmative sentences, negatives sentences and questions in the past simple tense.
🌿 Affirmative Sentences - Past Simple Tense 🌿
First we compare present simple vs. past simple affirmative sentences
Then we look: How to make a past tense verb?
We give examples of adding -ED to the end of regular verbs and what to do when a verb already ends in E (like live, smile and dance)
Next we give an introduction to the pronunciation of ED at the end of regular past tense verbs and how there are three main sounds /d/, /t/ and /id/.
🌿 Negative Sentences - Past Simple Tense 🌿
We compare present simple vs. past simple negative sentences and the difference between don't / doesn't vs. didn't
Then there is a simple exercise to practice making negative sentences in the past tense.
🌿 Questions - Past Simple Tense 🌿
We compare present simple vs. past simple questions and the difference between do / does vs. did.
Then there is a simple exercise to practice making questions in the past tense.
🌿 Short Answers - Past Simple Tense 🌿
We quickly show how to give short answers in response to past tense questions.
🌿 More Question - Past Simple Tense 🌿
Next we look at using “question words” such as when, where, why, what, who, which etc. before DID.
🌿 Irregular Verbs - Past Simple Tense 🌿
We show you how to make affirmative and negatives sentences as well as questions in the past tense using IRREGULAR verbs. We use the verb TO GO (past tense = WENT) to give examples of how easy it is to create past tense sentences and question with irregular verbs.

Hello teacher Rob,
thanks for sharing this lesson 😊
I was looking for the lesson about
the DIFFERENCE between SIMPLE PAST and PRESENT PERFECT,
but I didn't find the lesson on your official website.
Is it available or doesn't exist yet?
Thanks in advance and have an awesome day.
Hi JJ,
At the moment I don't have a lesson/video/chart about the perfect tense, just these notes: www.grammar.cl/Present/Perfect_Tense.htm
It is on my looooooong TO DO list though. :)
Sir / ma'am I have a doubt in past simple tense :
Why Sometimes we use BE verbs ( are, was , were ) & sometimes we don't use it?
The PAST TENSE is normally divided into two main parts.
TO BE and ALL THE OTHER VERBS.
They both have their own rules.
thnks you sir
You're welcome.
Can i get the new video everyday please sir? Your voice is essential to study english. Thank you
I don't have time to upload a new video every day. It usually take me TWO whole days just for one. I recommend watching ALL of the videos I already have for now.
Super
Thanks
SIR BOB WOODARD is the teacher we all want.

Sir what is the difference between was & did in past simple tense
DID is used with questions for all verbs except for TO BE and MODAL VERBS.
i want to know the past simple i need to know the specific time when i talk about the past simple

Good job teacher
😊
Thank you! 😃
Thank you so much - 1000 thanks! But your AUDIO...very low...
Interesting, seems fine at this end. (Note: I didn't add the music at the beginning this time.)
😮
Do you have to draw all this out on paper?
I have to create everything. It is not an app.
I type my notes in WORD then have to design everything with Adobe CC.
From india
Hi
Did you go to the concert today? Is it correct?
Yes
@@WoodwardEnglish But it is a past tense I mean could we just use adverb of time with past tense like ( I saw him at the shopping mall today.) Or (I have seen him at the shopping mall today ) I have a little confusion here which tense should we use in such a situation
I wondered...... What Was and Were used for???
The past tense of TO BE. It is an irregular verb that follows its own rules.
In this lesson I talk about WAS and WERE.

T u.
Sir you are teach the usa English
BOTH "British" and "American" English!
This is GENERAL English that will be useful around the world.
I wouldn't worry so much about trying to learn a certain type of English. What is MORE important is being able to express yourself and communicate.
Also, the reality is that there is not much difference between the two apart from accents.
Another thing is that even inside each country, there are many different accents (e.g. between states or even cities) so it is best to learn general English to communicate.
By the way, I am a native English speaker from New Zealand.
