I use 20 width divisions with 4 heavy/superheavies and rest(6) mountaineers.
They are such a meme division, break through everything.
Also, I also put maintenance companies on them always.(fill all five support slots)
As a result, not only do they breakdown less, they also take SO MUCH equipment from the enemy they TRAMPLE, that my stock FILLS UP with guns from the enemy and the ones sent to the enemy via lend lease.
They seem really good then

@@salter1630 I don't make them any bigger cause:

If your country is poor and has tons of chromium (e.g. Turkey), it might be a good idea to build heavy tank + cavalry divisions
The speed won't be much slower than using motorized with heavy tanks, and they use less supply than a full tank division

@Aegean Harrier Luchs isn't a AA tank in real life ,HOI4 is wrong.
Lmao i can imagine a luchs with a giant AA gun strapped to it
The Luchs has the same gun as some of the flaks
berit bohn-hempel
HOI also uses the SturmgeschĂŒtz as a Tank Destroyer, even though it was actually SP-Art. I guess theyâre partially justified because in practice the StuG really was great at killing tanks, much better than most of the actual Tank Destroyers Germany came up with except the really late ones (Jagdpanther, Jagdtiger). But fundamentally, the StuG was still and artillery piece on a tank chassis. Just goes to show that practice is a lot more complicated than a game.
So correction, the Luchs is a light scouting tanks made for reconnaissance and spotting. It use a Flak most likely to easily combat against infanrty and light armor, it could not aim that high in the air.
For the previous person the commented, the StuG is classified as an Assault Gun, it's not really artillery nor is it anti tank. It is part of the artillery branch in the wehrmacht and the artillery branch had full control over it, it has good HE to devastate infantryand solid AP to wreck armor.
It's not "Artillery" as it doesn't have a high degree of turret elevation like other self propelled artillery pieces, it was useful in many roles which helped aid it in destroying enemy tanks.
I love how you just ignored my favourite, amphibious. đą
Sowwy. Planning on a seprate video
Iam trying to find a video about them but cant find any may i ask how exactly they work? Are they just somehow better for naval invasions and thats all or theres more to know.
@@janbenedikt7249 It's pretty much a meme tank. There is almost no situation where you should use this unless you're playing america and your landing naval invasions non-stop because of it's production cost.
@@googane7755 oh ok thank you pretty good to know
Regarding the production cost per tank: the heavier the tank, the less tanks are required to fill a regiment, softening the difference in cost. As far as I am concerned, light tank regiments need 100 tanks, medium about 40 (can't confirm that one) and super heavy tanks only 15 (still expensive tho).
The relative diffenrence between the total cost of a regiment of tanks for all the kinds of tanks is significantly lower than the relative difference of production per tank.
I find that heavy tanks are only good in MP since AI isn't good with tanks. Light tanks are only useful in motorized divisions due to their speed after medium tanks are researched; they simply are too bad in combat compared to medium tanks.
Good point
Heavys are useful as walking armor. for exp if you use cavalry with tanks it gives you much armor and hardness.
My understanding was that penetration and armor is an average, so 18 width infantry with one support anti tank will have way less pen than three infantry and three mainline anti tank. Agree that light start to suffer but I don't think it's as simple as good anti tank tech making them worthless. I like to faze out my lights by chewing up the surplus and replacing with mediums in template as necassary, allows for good armor and economy, just do it a few divisions at a time for speed
I use LT destroyers with motorized infantry and anti-tank for emergency tank breaches in the front line and destroying other tanks as well, it works pretty well for me
Today we played MP.I was playing German Reich and i had 40 cw 8 medium tank 2 ,also 40 cw 6 heavy tank 2 ,in Barbarossa ,we pushed soviet to Stalin line (long river line) I had 13 k fighter 2 with full variant(soviets had 6 k ) allies send tons of planes and guns and tank then soviet pushed back me and also allies did D-Day (i had 120 infantry 20 cw ) then game is over :((. It was glorious

These videos are really helpful. Keep up the good work Dustin.
Thx đ
Hey Dustin, you've mentioned that you would like some new ideas for videos. Well, I think I have a good one.
Seeing as it's near impossible for your average gameplayer to micromanage every single nook and cranny of this vast and intricate game, perhaps you could do a video on what the most important aspects of the game one needs to focus on, and what things can afford to be postponed, or even outright ignored.
I've noticed different channels have different philosophies as to what is important and what is not, such as ignoring your navy when playing as Germany, or the 7-2 ratio of infantry to artillery when creating an infantry division and so on.
Maybe you could do a series of videos on each major aspect of the game and rank what you think is crucial and what isn't.
I realise that unless I dedicate some serious hours to this game it's never going to be a fun experience for me and thats what gaming is supposed to be about essentially isn't it?
This game has me so stressed when playing it I actually have to re-enter reality each time I spend 6 hours building up my nation only to stomped on by the allies in a few minutes.
Any and all helpful advice appreciated.
'Correction does much, but encouragement does more'. Goethe.
Huh, that's really interesting. Thanks man! I was thinking the opposite of the variants that destroyers were for infantry and artillery was for tanks xD my reasoning was like "tanks cant match other tanks" youd need an "elephant gun" (artillery). This was super helpful though!! Hopefully with some division fiddling I can prevent stupid naval invasion stalemate...ugh. this one invasion (I was brit raj) lasted for an entire year despite me bringing 5 stacks and having air super with like 1000 fighters and 1000 tacs. ::eyeroll::
Field Marshal engineer, fortress buster* + general engineer fortress buster +maus superheavy tank=75% bonus attack on forts, meaning that every fort has to be at least lvl 6 to def lmfao
Depends on the nation. But I always build light tanks and if my industry can handle it, some mediums/heavies. I usually don't bother with TDs, SPGs or SPAA since they added the motorized variants and though they are technically worse than the tank ones, they don't require additional research and they're still pretty decent.
Most of the time its preferance and whats easy honestly
Eh tank varients don't require much time to research, and SPGs are better than regular tanks when it comes to attaching to infantry (or in general!) Russia has KVs? Eat my STUG and FLAKs (SPAAs actually have decent penetration)
I will confess that I have never used SPAA or any other AA in my divisions! Just the normal LT+SPArt+TD with MOT/Mech and then use the same template for Mediums...Heavy tanks come to late in-game for me, I usually have most of the world before I can produce them in any numbers. I sometimes have just LT+SPArt+TD with no MOT and with upgraded engines only for fast encirclement's.
I think I have never done a 40 width....not sure.
I like to place heavy tanks with my infantry to grind down enemy tanks and overcome forts. Where there aren't enemy tanks engaged with my infantry line I use CAS/Air superiority and rush my light tank with motorized high soft attack for quick encirclements and overruns. Disengage when tanks show up and replace with infantry embedded with heavy tanks or tank destroyers (whichever is available). I dont use a lot of heavy tanks due to the cost but the overall is offset by the light tanks. Especially as Germany who can crank out iron like crazy. That also allows you to spend more on air superiority which imo is more important.
Thank you for these instruction sir, Iâm an old hoi3 player and hoi4 is so much more complicated
Glad to help đ
hoi3 feels mega complex.. but to be fair i've never played it
Wow this is one of the few useful HOI4 guides
And still no mention of those lovely schwimmpanzers to the left :D or difference between SPG and rocket motorized which both are pretty much anti-infantry and if you already use tanks you can just bail out on SPGs
Basically rocket motorized have a lot less soft attack but higher breakthrough to defend your org
Excellent video. Though, I would add that light tanks are more than enough for single-player from my experience. A 5 light/2 SPG/2 Mot template is enough to deal with the AI regardless if they can pierce it as these things are so cheap that you can spam a crap-ton before the war starts.
Yeah I'm doing a Germany playthrough right now and honestly it's not going so well trying to do light tank Germany LOL. If you choose to check out my videos
I normally always go for heavy tanks even if i play for a smaller nation and use them for everything except for exploitation where i instead send motorized divisions.
I love watching this guide series

Duno why but I like to put Infanty in my Tank Division (Heavy Tank + SPG) and a Cav division following the tank to push through the gap the tank made. I don't Play meta.
In multiplayer I usually do heavy tank 15 5s as Spain

Then when the war starts send them as volunteers to Germany as watch as the soveits get yeeted off the Stalin Line
The piercing gun value of any non-light tank is 1 more than that tanks' armor. That's why I always choose a tank design that gives armor bonuses. Even a 5% increase means your Medium II is basically immune to the enemy's Medium II. (assuming no other bonuses)

In MP Russia should go heavy tanks. You have plenty of steel and chromium. If you just build civs till danzig or war you have the production to keep your production off heavy tanks going. You canât compete against the axis in the air so you donât need to build airplanes you can easily build more than 8x40w heavies giving you a huge edge over Germany. A tank getting pierced does not mean big damage unless division HP is low. If you have breakthrough > combined enemy attacks you're still not going to get shredded.
Also with armor upgrades it is very challenging to beak the armor of 15/5 heavy tank divisions. Basically impossible for line anti-tank and medium TD, only heavy TD are adequate vs such a setup. Downside is that 15/5 heavy tank divisions are extremely expensive, not very fast, and since CAS completely ignores armor they still have that vulnerability.
solid upload. can you tell us which tanks and anti tank weapons the ai prefers? is there something like sovjets allways building medium tanks for example?
Ai sometimes perfers lvl 1 or 2 at and med 1
Dustin you are wrong that Lights always will be in shreds. We just need to combine them with Mechanized, and we will get armor and piericng like if it was MEDs division.
And production cost of that division will be lower.
Only one con- you gonna need much rubber.
Amazing!
Ty!
I do 12 heavy tank battalions + 8 motorised/mechanised (if I can) + support companies. Youâll only get a few but a few is all you need. They. Crush. Everything. With just 2 I managed to break 20 British divisions. Heavy tanks are costly but because theyâre so armoured you wonât lost many compared to light tanks - which you will lose loads of.
Light tanks are cheap and fast, medium is jack of all trades, heavy can "tank" a hit can keep going.
Thxâ€
Tank you very much!
Ha!
I am pretty bad at the game, but I noticed Super-Heavy Tanks also take upgrades really well for their role. If you take their upgrades evenly, their speed stays at 4 kph (the same as infantry) and their reliability stays the same. This means you don't really have to sacrifice on anything as you upgrade them. A 5-5-5-5 upgrade doesn't slouch on any important factors.
Maybe this is also the case with other tanks? I dunno, like I said, I am bad.
There's some situationals in your video. You said "if the enemy doesn't have AT". Now, what are the chances of that? Is it the same for all AI or does different AI have different likeliness?
He meant multiplayer
If you have good intelligence, view what composition the enemy is using in their template. Match their average AT value with a higher average Armor value.
It does work for quite a while but around 1942 a bug happens we're half a templates can still be seen in the other half cannot and then shortly after all the templates become hidden
Who needs Tanks when you can send people until the tanks run out of ammo
-Papa Stalin
-Also Papa Stalin
Except our tanks are arguably better, and we have the worldâs second largest economy. Letâs beat the Germans with their own doctrine and arguably the best artillery and CAS in the whole war!
*Soviet encirclement begins*
You should also have mentioned that even basic support AA, and/or converted light SPAA, has a tendency to give basic bitch templates enough piercing to wreck light tanks, and sometimes even mediums, and converting old shitty lights, mediums, and heavies to specialty tanks (SPG/AA/AT) can be done fairly quickly/cheaply if you need something specific. I like to convert old lights to SPAA and scatter them in my line for a quick cheap piercing bonus as they get replaced with new models, plus then it helps with air superiority debuffs in case I forget about air. God, I wish I could just set air wings to automatically redeploy to cover zones similar to how the navy works. Actually, that makes me wonder, I've never tried it, but what if you assigned airwings to garrison troops? Will they deploy to cover vulnerable airspace?
I had no idea bout the heavy tanks with fort busting. Good to know. Is that bonus scaled based on number of brigades in the division or percentage, or is it raw?
I wonder if there should be more tank tiers

or are they considered too expensive to make reliably for those divisions?

how the hell do you use anfib tanks? I've been using them with a 50 50 mix with amtracs and mostly using them to fight in swamps marshes, and river crossing but do know if I'm using them right. they have such weak armor so even if the other team has weak anti tank guns they can't get the armor bonus, so is it even worth it to try and up the armor through varients or is their main benifit just from the bonuses in wet area's. Other thing I used them to replace all my marines is that... smart? or no? Do I still need marines if I have a 20 width 50% tank 50% amtrac division? Should I add more tanks? Meme aside. Mediums are best imho. Nice balance between ic cost and firepower.
Make a vid on the best general tank templates
If you look at my playlist I have several template guides for each country and in them are several tank templates but mostly for Germany
So basically research medium destroyers ahead of time, and you pierce everything, have decent speed, and decent soft attack...
I know this video is pretty old, but what level of said tank do I really need? Can I get away with medium/heavy ones until the penalty goes away? I would assume so, but none of the guides and stuff ever use medium/heavy ones and just skip and go on to the next one even really early on.
I use medium tank 2, tank destroyer and ,sp artillery with motorized only need 6/8 divisions just push into anywhere like nothing, only problem is they just push into russia fast overstretching the frontline.
What do you think about HT divisions?
You should only ever try to get a couple out but mostly you should work on light and medium tank divisions
Im always switching my armor template to medium tank, and then im left with 3k light tanks with nothing to do. How to do the transition? Make another template with light tanks? Or mix?
Neither, form a variant template and keep the speed demon light tanks as the 2nd thrust after a victory break through with your mediums. The 12+ speed can push deep and if cut off probably only by strat-redeployed units which they can beat.
You never have too many tanks, you lack motorized infantry to fill out new divisions. Try not to swap as you lose your XP and dull the point.
If i were you with all those extra tanks make a duplicate template and replace the light with meds and keep the light tanks in reserve
Has anyone ever wondered and wish they somehow manage to feature in something like Schwerer Gustav?

Division templates for amphibious tanks and amtracks
Basically you should only use them in templates by adding one tank since they technically count as special forces
You didn't mention that the heavier tanks need less tanks per battalion than their smaller variants, bringing down the overall cost of them.
