Ahmad Bilal more higher then arceus
Madilyn Fairbairn I’ll add ratatta to the list of Pokémon who are surprisingly worshipped (bidoof, furret, snom)
As pokemon crystal enthusiast, both totodile and cyndaquil have other advantages. In the goldenrod super mart, they sell fire, thunder and ice punch, quitava and typhlosion can learn thunder and fire punch (which is huge against water/flying types for him) and totodile, croconaw and feraligr can all learn learn ice punch which is huge against Claire and lance. He runs through those with surf/ice punch easily.
Mine didn't last time I tried. All water and ice moves are special in Gen 2 and Feraligatr has mediocre special attack and speed at best. There are better water types like Lapras who is stronger on the special side, significantly bulkier to compensate for its mediocre speed and has STAB Ice Beam while Typhlosion's only real fire competition is Magmar.
@@yorecf9641 Bro you just don't understand that although fire type isn't that wide in the earlier gens that doesn't mean Feraligatr isn't good and that Typhlosion is way better. And bro he actually has a decent special and speed considering that HE IS INVESTED INTO BULK if that isn't clear to you, you are very dumb. Also, the ice type is not good for gen 2 considering the overwhelming about of firebreathers in this gen 2 and the overwhelming number of trainers with rock types. Just because Lapras is stronger on the special side doesn't mean he is better. Feraligatr especially with the water stab with his decent special attack stat surf hits hard and ice punch and bite can hit way harder. Also Lapras is bad for the steel and fighting gym and he might have a good ice coverage but really anything physical and its outta there. It has no good defense no good special defense they are pretty mediocre and the only thing that is good for it is its health. That doesn't mean it is better than Feraligatr. Also it isn't even worth it because it is such a specific location. You have to go to the Union Cave on Friday and a specific part? You could beat the game before you are able to get Lapras.
I've traditionally been a fire starter fan, since they were often both fast and hard-hitting compared to the other starters, which made breezing through trainer battles all the less stressful, and they could often continue to pull their weight later in the game, either because their fire-type moves were effective against rarer types like steel and ice, or because they had some viable secondary types like fighting or psychic type. That, and I could often find some viable water and grass type Pokémon in the early game, such as Gyarados for Pokémon Red/Blue.
ngl I have also been a fire starter fan
Same
Having two water pokemon is huge advantage after clearing erika
I once tried to use bulbasaur because everybody says is the best starter. worst choice ever, bulbasaur is weak/resisted against almost everything in the early game, every bug catcher, lass or whatever are full of pidgeys, bug-poison, plant-poison, poison-flying or psichic pokemon. in top of that rocket grunts alway have zubats, drowsies, grimers or koffings. first offesive stab attack bulbasaur is vine whip which only has 10 PP so every 2 or 3 battles bulbasaur has to relay again on tackle, and if yo try to make a balanced team poison typing of bulbasaur always mess up that balance. having adventage on the first two gyms does not make up for all the cons of bubasaur

Fire tends to be great for a starter too because Water and Grass types tend to be more readily available early. It usually takes 2-3 badges before you can catch any Fire types, much less a useful one
While it’s true that fire is rarer, the main issue with Fire in Gen 1 is that you really don’t benefit much from the Fire type at all. Teams usually have to have a flying type anyway (for Fly), which are really common, and Flying covers bug and grass types already. Ice types in this game are almost all water types, so Fire doesn’t help against them, and Steel didn’t exist then. The type unfortunately got obsoleted almost instantly in Gen 1.
That's so true and I don't pick water starters anymore because I feel I'm missing out of all the other water types out there
Plus, I so wanna hug a Vulpix!

@Joji i chose grookey because monke and it turned out to be a major asset, i also thought the games were a little too easy other than leon
My all time favorite pokemon is mudkip (and it's evolution) but i do admit that picking mudkip is like playing on easy mode, it can learn almost anything i needs, be it through leveling, tm or breeding, it's good enough to solo the whole game, or DUO without overleveling

Recently replayed omega ruby and have to agree. It was one of the first times that I felt i didnt need anything but my starter as swampert's only real weakness was almost never encountered and since most grass types are also poison it was as simple as using a STAB ground move. More often than not the hardest part of playing with a swampert starter is running out of PP

Me: *to my Chikorita* This is a dangerous game we've entered into, Basil.
Me to mine too: “Rosemarie this will be a Treacherous fight,’
Yeah Chikorita isn't great in it's own gen games, but I still like it the most personally. Oddly enough the game that made me love Chikorita was the first Mystery Dungeon games, where she was my partner in my first playthrough, and honestly I haven't had the heart to pick any other Pokemon as it lol. I feel like she fits the partners personality so well.
I accidentally chose Chikorita, and dont regret getting my precious baby, Leafy
*carefully pets Typhlosion*
"Every starter stinks against Claire"... Ummm... Most of her dragons are water type.. *points to Meganium*
In FR/LG there is a important change that makes squirtle much better. Bite is dark type. It makes squirtle capable of dealing with Mysty single by herself.
i played blue version a few months ago, and let me tell ya, wartortle can easily deal with misty with bite. her attacks deal almost no damage, even when she uses starmie, but bite can deal with everything she can throw.
you can even teach him mega punch, which i find unecessary, but hey, its an option. hell, it can even deal with surge because it can learn tm dig. which in gen 1 is basically a pocket earthquake.
I only ever really picked Charmander over the 2 in Gen 1 not because of charizard (I was younger and not as introduced to love charizard as much as I do now)
It was just that it felt more fun having a challenge and having to hunt as a kid I loved a good challenge in games (I still do to this day) I loved having to find a super rare Pikachu and having that as my raichu for the entire play through and it’s when I got emotionally attached to the forgotten Pokémon Mankey and Primeape (they beat Brock for me and half a misty for me which to me back then was a huge accomplishment)
I have played through fire red twice and both times I picked charmander my first playthrough never made it past misty because I was playing on an emulator that could not save but I will say in gen 3 charmander gets metal claw at level 13 which just bodies Brock and this is reasonable to learn because I was just kind of running around and just got a charmeleon before Brock

I think you underestimated Rowlet utility. You have to remember that untill he evolves in Decidueye he is also a
Flying type and even after keeps the Flying coverage. So going he is neutral in the first trial, strong against the first Kahuna, then strong against Water, weak against Fire, strong against Grass with Flying moves, strong against Olivia, resist the eletric one, strong against Ghost with his stab (also weak but still), weak against Nanu and resisted by Dragon, although he can use the Flying coverage against Kommo-o(and also neutral against Fairy if you play USUM, the Ghost type meaning he doesn't have to much problems agIainst Ribombee ) and then strong against Hapi.
Incineroar meanwhile has no advantages in the Mele Mele trials, is weak against the Water trial that is the earliest of the Akala trials, neautral against the Fire one, strong against the Grass one, weak against Olivia, mostly neutral against the Electric one although i will admit is strong against both of the totems, strong against Ghost, neutral against Nanu, resisted by dragon, weak against fairy and Hapi.
I can still see you giving the edge to Popplio since being strong against all the Kahunas is a big deal, although i will still argue Rowlet being better in the early game due to him getting stab from the Flying coverage while Popplio doesn't with the Fairy coverage untill he evolve, and being strong against two of the Akala trials while Popplio is only strong against one. Popplio is slightly better against the Normal trial but only if you face Raticate so half of the games. However i strongly diasagree with Rowlet being the worst as you implied, i think is at the very least the second best.
While I do agreee that Rowlet is a bit underrated in Gen 7, its still the worse starter. Some of the advantages it has are iffy like the water one. In the ultra games, the totem pokemon has aurora beam which basically destroys any grass type. And while evolving into ghost can be helpful. It usually isnt too useful. Especially since ghosts types just arent great in Alola since so many important ( and non inportant ) trainer's have dark type moves ( seriously try playing Gen 7 with only ghost types and you will realize how many pokemon have dark coverage ). Overall while i will say that all three alolan starters are decent. Incineroar just has a more consistent typing ( and plus fire types are a bit scarce in alola ) and Primarina basically decimates the game.
The best starter for a scarlet and violet playthrough is skeledirge. It decimates the first 2 gyms being bug and grass. It aslo decimates the last 3 gyms being psychic, ghost and ice. It also good against larry since ghost is immune to normal. Skeledirge also decimates poppy's entire team and 5 of geeta's pokemon. It also decimates giacomo since he only uses a pawniard and eri since ghost is imune to fighting. Its also good against 4 of sada's pokemon. It has some coverage moves like disarming voice and earthquake
Game Freak really loves their Fire types huh? Well, can't blame 'em, most Fire starters are amazing.
@@BruhMoment-mn9kn It honestly seems like, after the fire type's disastrous debut in Gen 1/Kanto, GameFreak have done everything in their power to justify it's existence by shilling the hell out of it in every way possible.

Fun fact!!! Swampert has the most highest base state total then any starter!
Swampert is my favorite pokemon!!!
and to this day there still hasn't been a starter to break that 535 bench mark set by Swampert, the only 2 that came close after him was Infernape & Delphox at 534 which is the same for Charizard & Typhlosion
it's Unown why game freak is trying to avoid making a starter that goes above that bench mark to say 540 but, Arceus know's what they have going on

Whenever I rewatch this vid I think how they made Chikorita as a filler starter for grass because she just lost to 98% of the game content by default. It doesn't help that the animal group she was in didn't allow her to learn the elemental punches from golden rod, then her not having poison as a secondary meant you couldn't even free farm team rocket without care. I genuinely don't think there's been a worse starter for the game

iirc, the gen 1 starters were essentially pseudo-difficulty settings. Charizard had a harder beginning, but got higher stats and could evade the extremely prevalent ground type. Blastoise could crush the first gym, and didn't suck against the second. Venusaur gets to just steamroll, but they're weak to psychic and flying, meaning they're screwed when up against Blue at the end (Blue has 3 counters to Venusaur, and only 1 counter to Charizard/Blastoise)
Ultimately, the best option is still Bulbasaur. Since water types are just so common (you even have Mt.Moon Magikarp immediately after Brock) Blastoise is kind of pointless. Charizard is especially worthless since its endgame "finally he's good" is offset by Moltres existing.
Venusaur is the suckiest Gen 1 starter final evolution. CHARIZARD BEATS ALL!!!

It's worth noting that Fire type starters are also preferred because it's usually difficult to get more fire types, especially on early routes. It's often trivial to get alternate Water or Grass pokemon if you didn't pick them: they also have a lot of overlap against ground & rock cave pokemon so you can often use either equally. Fire types are also super effective against early bugs (where grass are weak against early bugs & flying).
I think the only non-starter fire type you can get before a first "gym" is Growlithe: you can get it route 2 in Alola, or first route (201) in Sinnoh if you specifically do dual-slot with FireRed.
@@cameronlapp9306 you can also get Growlithe before Falkner in Crystal, Ponyta before Roark in Sinnoh, Simisear before Cilan if you pick Snivy in BW1 and Growlithe or Vulpix as soon as you enter the Wild Area in Galar. Also, I wouldn’t say that fire types are always the best just because they’re rarer: some regions like Kanto and Hoenn are incredibly unfriendly to them so you’re better off just not using a fire type period.
Route 1 bird can kill grass and bug, no need for fire
Kalos throws 3 at you before the first gym plus the Fennekin. Of course you only get another 3 or so plus the Charmander for the rest of the region, so it's still not many, just frontloaded.

For the Galar starters, I actually think that either Grookey is the best pick. It hangs on against the first two gyms while your team is still in development, and Corvisquire, a Pokemon that almost everyone uses, is enough to solo the grass gym by itself. Also, Marnie’s Morpeko which you have to battle before the fire gym takes quite some preparation to defeat, since you have little to no super effective coverage on it, so your starter (most likely your strongest Pokémon at that time) would be your best option, and Thwakey resists electric. As for the fire gym, you can catch a wild Drednaw in the mine after the water gym which crushes the fire gym. It’s already evolved, so you can use it temporarily for the gym and then box it without having to raise a Chewtle if you don’t plan on using it. Then from that point on, you’ll have a way stronger team and more options for team members.

If you do Sobble, in Pokémon sword, you may have an advantage due to kabu being the first road block the rock gym is easy to do with water types. The fight with Leon when you go up against a Charizard Sobbles final form can easily clear it
a good portion of these are starters i did/wanted to pick in games i don't have, so i guess i have good taste!
I’ll be honest I mainly picked grass types for some reason
I did as well but thats bc I don't really care for the fire-type starters besides Fennikin, that was the only time that I ever chose a fire-type starter. That and my favorite Fire-type is Growlithe, which is really good and can get in pretty much in every game.

Bulbasaur is actually the best starter against the first 3 gym, as Bulbasaur resisting Surge and being able to use Leech Seed to slowly defeat Surge is huge.
Good into 3 doesn't make it great, it'd walled by 5 gyms and that isn't made up by the first 2 gyms and you'd have to put significant resources into a team for pretty much everything. There's a reason why speedrunners use blastoise and never venasaur
@@Supertoddy96 Blastoise is definitely the best starter in game against gyms I won't disagree, just Bulbasaur has the edge in the 1st 3.

Feraligatr’s special attack is still lower than Kingdra’s HP and special defense. It’s actually doing less damage than Typhlosion’s Thunder Punch. Feraligatr does have a genuine advantage in HGSS with Dragon Claw though.
@@yorecf9641 true you right about the kingdra situation I was going more towards what he said about effectiveness and he never did state that tm taught moves didn't count but you are right about the kingdra issue although I always found that a pokemon that knows twister or dragon rage that has a defensive could always help out if I ever chose totidile as my stater
@@runthesehands4761 he didn’t, though he did put an emphasis on doing well in the beginning so you can find alternatives for the other starters. A big balancing issue, is that fire types are rare compared to grass and water. And there are as good water types. And grass strengths are covered by electric, fighting and again water. And you can find good electric and fighting types easily. They should add more stronger fire types earlier in the game to balance thus out.
in x and y i would take froakie and bulbasaur, since the fire type is good but the gym battles are easy and i think they're better against the actually challenging (not difficult) battles, such as diantha and team flare. also bulbasaur gets many useful status moves, so it's still better than charmander

Yep.
Ok-- Empoleon is NOT ugly. I love my giant penguin boi- He's so regal looking~
But, I gotta agree that he's not the strongest in the beginning of the game. Although, when it comes to later in the game, because he's not the best in the beginning, you actually end up being decently over leveled by the time you get to the Elite 4. Not to mention, Empoleon can learn the majority of HM's that are pretty strong combat wise, such as Surf and Rock Smash for a couple of examples. While, I believe, the other two can learn Rock Smash, Empoleon is the only one that can learn Surf.
Admittedly, I never played through Pearl with the other starters, as I had the stupid idea in my head that water wasn't as weak to grass as the others were to their opposing types. So, I picked it based on what I thought would be best against the rival. Got my ass kicked multiple times at that first grass gym, though.
I agree and when people say one starter is the "worst" I don't agree also even though it may not be good in game and when people hate on the design I definitely disagree and I still love the starter matter how its design and gameplay os and I also love Empoleon

In my opinion type advantage isn't the most important, but whether or not any Pokemon could replace that starter
Venusaur is one of plenty Grass type Pokemons, especially Grass/Poison
Infernape however is one of only two Fire type Pokemon in the entire Diamond/Pearl Pokedex, as well as a Fighting type a pretty good typing for the region, meaning he almost needs to be chosen as Torterra and Empoleon has decent substitutes
Still, a grass type keeps being just plain better, whether it's bulbasaur or not, since it does well in the first 3 gyms (resists electric) and you can't get grass types before beating the first one. Charmander continues to not perform well in the first 2 gyms, and for the fourth one you have a bunch of flying type options you can use for it so you don't actually need a fire type, fire types just don't do well in kanto, then for squirtle it is at first but you can get a really strong water type before the second gym in gyarados. You have to think about how the progression in the game goes, not just if you can use a starter or replace it with something else.
Nah, I think this has more to do with a very square view that people tend to have of "party building" in pokemon.
You shouldn't try to fit reality into a predetermined vision, but rather adapt to existing needs and challenges: Fire in the Kanto region has almost no function (considering the gym leaders, the elite four and the villain team), making the discussion of "how to replace the fire starter" absolutely pointless.
In fact, the trio Venusaur, Jolteon and Jynx is enough to land super-effective hits on 90 per cent of the region.
I chose that combo too! Fennikin and bulbasour was a great duo because they both shined on my kalos team, beating the heck out of the the gyms too. I wonder if you had to replace the starter types with 3 others, which would you chose? I'd choose dark, psychic, and fighting type just to make it interesting
the problem with this would be that while psychic only resists fighting, but dark, its immune to psychic
FENNEKIN IS SPELLED WITH 2 E'S, NOT 2 I'S! AND THERE IS NO O IN BULBASAUR!
