      There is the site for the unofficial English patch for Rusty made by a group called "46 OkuMen". There is another Rusty video on youtube made by a slightly more popular channel called "Sharopolis". Otherwise, the most active English language community for PC-98 in general is probably the Facebook group "NEC PC-98 Club". There are also PC-98 forums on both fullmotionvideo.free.fr and nfggames.com, but neither one is very active anymore.
      EDIT: Also maybe /r/PC98 on reddit.
      There are generally not very many active resources about PC-9801 available in English.

  • @naopapa3428
    @naopapa3428 Před rokem +140

    A note for people who still use the actual PC-9801 machine.
    It uses a hardware feature called EGC in Rusty.
    This feature has been available since PC-9801VX (R, D, F, B series, all PC-9821)
    And on Epson compatible machines, it has been available since PC-386S.
    Rusty is a hybrid-compatible program that automatically detects the hardware configuration and runs on models that do not have EGC.
    However, the PC-9801VM and Epson PC-286 series are not equipped with EGC, so they run extremely slowly.
    For this reason, the supported models in the package are VX or later.
    I know of very few PC-9801 games that use the EGC function.
    Even in NEC's reference manual, it is an omitted feature, and there is almost no accurate technical information available.
    When playing Rusty on a real machine, I recommend 9801DA, DS, FA, FS, BA, etc. and CPU of 386SX or 386DX or higher if possible.
    PC-9821 series is the best environment.

    • @ZX3000GT1
      @ZX3000GT1 Před rokem +3

      What did EGC do that necessitates the use of it in the game? Is it something like the Blitter in the Amiga?

    • @naopapa3428
      @naopapa3428 Před rokem +14

      @@ZX3000GT1
      The background cells are transferred between VRAM to VRAM at high speed.
      However, since EGC can only be used in 16-bit units, EGC is only used for even numbers in the horizontal direction and not for odd numbers (multiples of 8 pixels).
      Therefore, when stopping or getting caught in a rope, the position is adjusted to be even when the number is odd.

    • @Spaztron64
      @Spaztron64 Před rokem +2

      @@naopapa3428 This is also one of the reasons why the AT (IBM PC compatible) version has higher processor requirements than the VX version. VGA has no such acceleration, relying entirely on software rendering. Though, there exist some tricks with VGA latches that allow for faster planar writes which could be implemented if we had the source code of TMix and Rusty.

    • @atomicskull6405
      @atomicskull6405 Před rokem +1

      @@Spaztron64 VGA doesn't use planar VRAM or tile graphics it uses bitmap graphics and what was called back then "chunky pixels". There was one big block of VRAM and each pixel was one byte (in 256 color mode) that referenced one entry in a color lookup table. Smooth scrolling was accomplished by writing an off screen strip and then moving where the display started in memory. So you weren't moving the bitmap graphics rather you were moving the screen around it a line at a time.

    There was a certain charm to the in game art style from back then that I wish never went away. I never played this game, but I am of course speaking of a lot of the old mega drive/genesis RPGs of the time. Phantasy Star 2, 3, 4. Shining Force 1 and 2, Langrisser, to name the few off the top of my head that still ring out in my mind. The it felt magical back then seeing these unfamiliar designs combined with these large epic tales, and sometimes dramatic as well, gaming was so different back then. Everything was a artistic expression more so than a corporate product factory.

    Hi, Basement Brothers.
    The PC-9801 version of the game screen is "640x400", so the correct aspect ratio is "768x480 or 640x(Center)400", which is 1.2 times the horizontal aspect ratio of the game movie.

      Thanks for your suggestion. I understand that some players prefer "pixel perfect" mode, but I prefer to squish the horizontal aspect ratio so that it looks more similar to a 4:3 monitor.
      I just tried your suggestion, though, and Rusty in particular does look pretty good in "pixel perfect" mode (probably because the character Rusty is so skinny). The circles like the moon at 17:58 might also look a little more circular like that too, but might be my imagination.
      But, regardless, I always use the same 4:3 setup on my RGB upscaler for all PC-98 games... for consistency's sake. In most PC-98 games the characters look too fat to me in "pixel perfect" mode.

    I would say that pixel art peaked with the PC-98, rusty is an early game but still has it's charm. However some later games just look gorgeous. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the limited 15 colors per screen and high resolution of the system.

    I've been looking for this game for many years. I can't remember where or how I learned of it but I know it was some back water of the internet website (maybe an old geosite page or something akin to that) I came across by sheer chance. I've never seen it in person but I saw it appear on Ebay ONCE about 5 years ago now when I was notified there was a listing for it. It was $6,000! My eyes nearly bulged out of my head as I was unaware prices for video games could even get that high. The highest price I had ever seen was Panzer Dragoon Saga and that's only recently started to hit the $2,000 mark. What's even crazier is I put it on my Watch List and Ebay informed it it had been SOLD! Like maybe a minute tops and it was bought immediately at that insane price. I'm still stunned by everything about that. That was the day I realized I'll never own a copy of this game.

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  Před rokem +1

      Now you know better!
      It's really kind of a shame that Briganty has adult scenes (and really raunchy ones too, I might add), because it's a great game that probably loses a lot of potential players nowadays because of them. Unfortunately, adult scenes really were a selling point at the time in Japanese PC games. The company that made Briganty actually closed down their non-adult game label (TGL) while leaving their adult one (Giga) alive for a few years before completely ceasing game development. Presumably that's because their adult games were more profitable. (The company still exists as "TGL", BTW, but they haven't made games in decades.)

    • @DragoonEnRegalia
      @DragoonEnRegalia Před rokem +3

      @@BasementBrothers It's sad what happened to TGL, even if they still exist as an IT company (along with others suffering that fate like SystemSoft). Their Taiwan branch became Winking, a very successful contractor who still does their own Heroine Anthem games on the side.
      WRT ero-content stereotyping of J-PC games, it's slowly dwindling off as more of the non-ero/milder software gets more attention & context (ex. fan translations). It's so much easier to glance at the art these games had, particularly the fancy eroge ADVs, and discount those which relied more on crunching numbers or which went for more Westernized/less overtly cute art-styles. Videos like this & what I do on Twitter should hopefully encourage a lot more folks to not just joke about PC-98 games being all Touhou or porn (though I will say some ADVs like Doukyuusei genuinely benefit from having sex scenes insofar as they aid character development, and I really enjoy that when it happens).

    Hey! Friendly neighborhood MSX fanboy here again, with more MSX Fun Facts(tm). Heheh.
    Actually, I should first say that this was an awesome video -- I'm certainly familiar with Rusty (it's hard to be into retro Japanese PC gaming and NOT be familiar with it!), but I've never actually played it, so it's interesting to see it in action and get a really thorough look at how it works under the hood. The approach to running... sounds pretty obnoxious, NGL, and I'm not sure how well I'd be able to get used to that. But other than that, it looks like an awesome time, and a game I would REALLY enjoy playing!
    On the MSX front, you may think I have nothing to talk about that would be Rusty-related... but actually, there exists a Rusty clone for MSX! It's called "Noname" (yes, really), and is an indie homebrew game from prolific Spanish homebrew developer Oscar Kenneth Albero Ingles, better known as KAI Magazine -- though it's actually a vintage homebrew from him, as it was developed back in the late '90s!
    It's... nowhere near as good as Rusty, which is something I'm sure KAI himself would agree with. And it's also an EXTREMELY SMUTTY R18 game -- the cutscenes are some of the best-animated on the entire MSX platform, TBH, but a solid half of them are just straight-up hardcore sex scenes, with undocumented keyboard toggles to change... erm... positions. Yeah.
    The game is still worth playing, though, if only for the absolutely RIDICULOUS story and the "incredible" translation. See, the game was developed in Spanish, and translated to English... and it's a very rough translation, but it's absolutely HILARIOUS. I actually recorded the entirety of the intro (which is... mostly R18-free!) here, many years ago, because I couldn't stop laughing at the absolutely amazing dialogue. If you're so inclined, I highly recommend checking it out, as I'm quite certain you'll get a good laugh out of it. The video ID on CZcams is HA4iPTX0968.
    The game itself is also... fine. Though it only plays at a decent pace on a Turbo R system (it's EXTREMELY SLUGGISH, to the point that it's barely playable, on an MSX2 or MSX2+), and fair warning, just about all of the music in it is MSX FM arrangements of music from other games (including Rusty's iconic stage 1 theme, arranged to MSX FM for Noname's stage 1!). Even the above-linked intro uses the classic pop song "Just Can't Get Enough" as BGM, for some reason. ;)
    Oh, the game also has a number of secret passages leading to items, but if you don't backtrack and take the regular path through each stage after you're done exploring them, the boss won't ever show up. So, yeah... it's buggy, on top of everything else.
    Despite all of these complaints, though, I still do recommend it. It's an experience! And even with all the hardcore sex scenes, the intro and ending alone make the whole game worthwhile. And if you're looking for more Rusty action... well, this isn't quite that, but it's a decent enough gas station brand substitute, so it'll at least sate your hunger a little bit. ;)
    Just figured I'd let you know!

    • @BasementBrothers
      @BasementBrothers  Před rokem

      Hahaha. Never heard of it. Sounds... interesting. :)
      And running Rusty is really not that big a deal. If you're playing on an emulator, the hard drive images out there are mostly set up so you can just boot them and you'll get the voices. On a real PC-98, you've pretty much just gotta run the installer and then boot the system with the system disk inserted. No biggie. Also if you have an extra hard drive partition, you can just go ahead and set it up with the boot files from the system disk and have an all-in-one Rusty bootable hard drive disk with the voices working (just like the emulator hdd images).

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad Před rokem +1

      @@BasementBrothers Oh, yeah, my friend Michelle gave me disks of the English-patched version all set up and ready to go, I just never got around to checking them out before giving my PC-98 back to her (yes, sadly, I am PC-98less now!). So if I were to play this (and I very well may one of these days!), it would be via emulation, sadly.
      ...And yes, I know it must hurt to hear that I gave the PC-98 back, but at least I didn't sell it or anything! I gave it back to my friend who has a lot more time and patience than I do, who already owns other PC-98s but will still no doubt make good use of the Epson formerly owned by me.
      I simply don't play enough games these days to justify collecting for multiple retro PCs, and as I'm already in so deep with MSX collecting, and I can readily output my MSX to my big-screen HDTV with minimal effort and a shockingly high-quality signal (something I definitely could not do with the PC-98!), I chose MSX.
      It was an easy choice, in retrospect, but only because I got such a huge head-start with MSX. Were I to have started collecting for PC-98 way back when, things could've turned out very differently now!
      That's part of why I love watching these videos of yours, though. They help show me what could've been. I can enjoy these games vicariously through you! Heheh.
