- Marc Lamont Hill talks to Somali Deputy PM Salah Ahmed Jama about the war on al-Shabab, the crises facing his country.
In August 2022, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared a “total war” against al-Shabab. Today, Somalia says it is making progress in its fight against the group, but challenges remain.
Meanwhile, the country is facing a diplomatic crisis with neighbouring Ethiopia over the breakaway region of Somaliland. Domestically, despite some advances, Somalia is facing numerous challenges, including increasing effects of climate change, a refugee crisis and hunger.
The question remains - can Somalia cope with a growing crises on multiple fronts? And what lies ahead for the country?
This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill talks to Somali Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama about the country’s current situation and its future.

You are absolutely wrong! The 1977 war which I took part in the fighting. Somalia didn't fight that war at all. The key Ethiopian clans: Arsi Oromo from Bale, Ogden Liberation Front from Ethiopia and others from Ethiopia fought along Somalia armed forces. Now, they are no longer with Somalia and Smalian government. So, you are your own this time. You also need to remember that President Mohammad Ziyad Bare government was a functional government. This time, Somalia is a failed State. So, if you to war with your one leg, then, Somalia will totally will go apart and totally failed State. Then of course, there will not be a government. The choice is yours to decide what you want to do to safe guard your country.

This is simply ridiculous, Somalia has no GDP magnitude. Soldiers are not enough. This host is spot on pressing him by saying that the president is foolish. He said in a matter of weeks alshabab would be over and yet its been a yr. Alshabab still continues to control and expand 20% of Somalia. This is not anything secret you can find it online. Struggling this much with only an insurgency for decades and yet Ethiopia dealt with TPLF in only a couple years. Instead of admitting that you very obviously don't have the man power you sit there and tell us that a group who uses plastic pipe bombs, suicide bombers and child soldiers is sophisticated.
I agree with most of what you say...except that "Ethiopia dealt with TPLF." Ethiopia had large scale US backing, including satellite imaging, logistical support and supplies sufficient to support Ethiopia's entire invasion force, US ground troops and Spectre gunships.

don't come here and praise Ethiopia that eliminated one million of it's citizens in a game. It has used Chinese，Turkish，Russia arms and soldiers for the conflict. They bought arms and drones on loan. By contrast，Somalia was under arm embargo up to end of 2023. They were also one of Endepted countries，they were able to repay as the central government collapsed 30 years ago，thus they can't borrow or take loans.
By the way don't believe the terror groups propaganda，terrorist group is fragmented that he abandoned it's international ambition，foreign Merceneries fled in dozens，local terrorist leaders are fighting each other. many are negociating with clan leaders and regional authorities to give them protection from the same group. Yes，the government paused the fight for a period of time for natural challenges such as humanitarian relief and heavy raining，the troops lacked sufficient logistics.
Bad news for the terrorist group，fights will restart very soon，this time with better arms and logistics.

The interviewer employed various techniques in order to undermine the Deputy PM. The interviewer asks, "Your president said that, what would you say?" and even tries to mimic the president's voice.

However, Somalia has made progress in recent years, with the help of international partners, in pushing Al-Shabaab out of some territories and disrupting their operations. To achieve a lasting peace, Somalia must address the root causes of extremism, build strong institutions, and foster economic development. Additionally, reconciliation and dialogue with moderate elements of Al-Shabaab could help to reduce their appeal and influence. Ultimately, a comprehensive approach that combines military, political, and social solutions is necessary to defeat Al-Shabaab and bring stability to Somalia.
