  • Are you thinking about building your first sim racing or sim drifting rig? Putting a sim setup together can be expensive so this video covers where it's worth spending the money and where you can cut corners. Some of the topics discussed include the best beginner wheelbase, whether to play on console or PC, and what kind of screen setup you should use. I've got almost a decade of experience in sim racing with wheels like the Logitech G29 and G920, Thrustmaster T300RS, Fanatec DD1, Simagic Alpha Mini and more. I've also been involved in various motorsports through the years, including transition over from sim drifting to real life.
    If you've been on the fence about getting into sim or just need some advice about your setup, this video should help get you pointed in the right direction.
    Topics in this video:
    0:00 Intro
    0:39 System - Console vs PC
    1:46 Screen Setup - Screen vs VR
    2:46 Wheel Stand - Compact vs Full
    3:25 Wheelbase - Logitech vs Thrustmaster
    5:16 Accessories - Pedals, Shifters, etc.

    If you have some old joystick for flying sims lying around just use that as a handbrake. You ofc have to setup axis accordingly but its not difficult and you get lots of extra buttons as a bonus.

    I bought myself a Logitech G29 and shifter as my first wheel and pedal set and I'm pleased as punch with it. In fact, I also built a Ricmotech RS-1 and bolted everything down. Bolted down wheel for stability, bolted on 6-speed shifter, inverted pedals also bolted on. Actual car seat from a junkyard. It's very nice. I've gotten plenty of compliments on it. Also replaced the brake pedal spring with a newer one like the G923 has. I've been playing PS3 and PC games with it. Gran Turismo 5/6, F1 2010, American Truck Simulator, Forza Horizon 4, and at some point, Assetto Corsa.

The only problem with it is that on PS3 it emulates the Logitech Driving Force GT, not the G25/27, so you don't get the clutch pedal and you cannot use the 6-speed H-pattern shifter. I bought a cheap thrustmaster tx for $240, and man, it's a blast. The belt makes a little noise, and you can tell it was someone's rig for years, but it still works perfectly. I totally agree with this, I have the logitech g29. And while it is obviously a great upgrade from a controller I am kind disappointed in it, it feels like an expensive kid's toy and I regret not spending a bit more for belt driven. I am happy that it comes with a clutch pedal though because many pedal sets don't, and the good ones with a clutch are quite expensive. I also got the logitech shifter and later on got a fanatec handbrake to make drifting a bit easier.

      @Tomica031 Před rokem +5

      My friend couldn't find t300 that I have, and bought g29. It feels like toy compared to t300, difference is really big for the small difference in cost. G29 is okay, you still can drive on it and feel things, but it really lacks power and you can drive it with your fingers, it is that lite, while on the other hand my hands hurt on t300 after 30minutes of driving, and I only use 85% of force. But pedals wise, I found g29 ones to be more intuitive because they are similar feel to todays modern car pedals (which is not something you find in race car), and I had to learn to use t300 ones for quite some time, they are sturdy but have really almost no force back, so at least you can be happy with that

      I left a comment elsewhere but look up LUT generator and make one for your wheel. It will make a huge difference in improving the feeling.
      If you aren’t familiarliar, it’s software that creates a customized force feedback curve for your wheel which you can then use in various racing sims so that the force feedback is much more accurate to what the game intended it to feel like. I cannot overstate how much of a difference it makes, especially the more subtle force feedback effects feel so much better after setting one up. That’s what I did with my Logitech and it’s so much better than what it is stock.

Small amount of haptics on the wheel itself makes the audio of the vehicles rumble your experience even better. Also what do you do for practicing tandems? not to be mean but alot of people in some of the popular servers are still learning lol. Just wondering if maybe there’s more serious servers, or maybe discord groups. Figured I’d ask. Love the content!

      Awesome to hear, honestly my main goal for the channel is to make it less intimidating and get other folks to make the jump.
      I'm sure there are some more serious servers out there but I just join whatever and drift around a bit until you spot the few folks on the server who look decent, then start snugging up. This is very much how real life tandems have been in my experience as well, spotting for the people closest to your skill/car level who look consistent enough to avoid wrecking your car. Then approach and ask if they'd be up for tandems.
      Then inevitably some body smacks into you from behind and wrecks the whole train lol.

    Due to low budget i got myself a thurstmaster t248, which is both, gear and belt driven. With small diameter wheel it feels toyish but it's quite hard to change it. As entry level i think it's acceptable because it has simmilar price to Logitech but has got the belt

    Oy! I just recently picked up a 64-bit e-brake for the Omega Apex (Same folding stand you have), but had to buy an auxiliary plate to even attach it next to my shifter. We actually have the same wheelbase and the 8 shifter. Unfortunately my brake is on the outside of the shifter, and that's caused some wrist strikes a few times.
    I see yours is mounted with the brake against the inner bar though. What did you cobble together to make that work?

    Used a Logitech g920 wheel for a long time now. Tried learning to drift and couldn’t do it. Spent weeks at a time learning, then going away and coming back again with same result. Then I got a direct drive wheel yesterday and within half hour of trying to drift once I got use to the wheel, I was doing donuts more consistently, gaining back control at corners more consistently and actually drifting without spinning out. Sure I still spin out. But it feels like I actually started to get it. And looking forward to using it more on days off to learn. Also my lap time has improved slightly on the brands hatch course. But I think that’s because the feedback is faster to feel, and more responsive.

    I second everything you said in the video lol. I'm currently running a logitech g920 +shifter +keyboard ebrake that I've modded into feeling more """realistic""", such as increased brake and clutch resistors, resistor bands in the shifter and, after snapping the gear on my first g920, upgradging to a more sturdy gearset.
    What I can tell people wanting to start off is to NOT BUY LOGITECH. It is almost a guarantee that you will run into issues with your setup and teach yourself bad habits along the way to compensate. To compound those issues, unless you're really tech savvy or know what a drift car is actually supposed to feel like then you likely won't even know that you're teaching yourself bad habits along the way.
    On top of that, logitech software is notorious for bugging out and im currently experiencing centering issues with my logitech even after a complete PC/hardware wipe and LUT mapping my wheel.
    All in all, seat time is king, even on a sim, but sub-par seat time isn't doing you any favors.

I think the DD pro even on console is a lot better compared to using the T300 RS on pc. Just my thoughts. I could be wrong. Dirt 2.0 and wrc generations. Amazing. F1 2022...very good with the DD pro and mclaren open wheel. It's still som cade, I know. Gt7 compared to ACC had a lot more to offer. Sim cade or not. And gt7 now on psvr2. Thank for the info! I recently purchased my first sim rig; therefore, I've kept it relatively cost effective by purchasing the GT Omega Classic wheel stand and seat mount. I picked a driver seat from a 2015 Mini Cooper for $100 from a junk yard (saved me $200). Lastly, I went with the Logitech G923 to go with my PSVR2 headset. If I enjoy this rig, I will upgrade the components, including the wheel. In your opinion, if money were not an option, which wheel and pedal setup would you choose?

    • @JankyDrift
      @JankyDrift  Před rokem +2

      Honestly I have no idea. There's a bunch of sim focused channels out there that could probably answer better than I can in terms of expensive gear, but my focus is generally bang for the buck because I'm trying to also balance the cost of drifting in real life.
      My setup now is a decent low-mid range:
      Simagic Alpha Mini
      Thrustmaster TLCM
      TM TH8A shifter
      Gt Omega Art
      If I had a bunch of money I'd probably go higher end and include a motion rig, but would really have to do some more research to see what that would be.

    Janky awesome video. Two questions:
    1. Can you link the steering wheel/hand brake? any mods required? did you follow a video or did I miss a video that you had of it?
    2. For $500-600 would you skip the Thrustmaster and just go with a MOZA R5 Wheel & Pedal Bundle?

    • @JankyDrift
      @JankyDrift  Před rokem +1

      1. Steering wheel and handbrake links below. For the full size wheel on a T300 you need an adapter, which you can find aluminum ones for $30-40. I have a 3D printer, so I just printed my own at 100% infill, but most of the 3D printed ones you find for sale aren't printed at high enough infill to last.
      Handbrake plugs into your PC, so no mods required there, just can't use it on console.
      2. Complicated question... If that $600 budget includes all your peripherals I'd probably suggest T300 since you can build out a more complete sim setup for the same price, (full size steering wheel and adapter, hand brake, wheel stand, and so on). Plus you can usually find some good used deals on the T300 and save some money for VR if you don't already have it. Now if you have that $600 budget specifically for the wheelbase, go direct drive. It's not a million times better as a lot of people say, but it's definitely better (faster rotation, higher sustained torque). As someone new to the hobby I generally recommend going the used cheap route first to make sure you're going to stick with it.
      The wheel I was using: www.ebay.com/itm/234648150527?epid=12027951908
      The handbrake (looks like the cheaper version without the clamp is out of stock):

  • @SimRacingVeteran
    @SimRacingVeteran Před rokem +3

    It’s more expensive but I’m of the camp of buying stuff that you won’t replace in the future.
    Investing in a strong rig right from the go is the way to go. So in the future when you upgrade to a direct drive you know your rig will be able to handle it.
    I also recommend going straight to a load cell brake pedal. Sure spring loaded potentiometer pedals will get you started but you’re going to be giving lap time up.

    • @JankyDrift
      @JankyDrift  Před rokem +1

      I don't disagree if you've got the cash to burn and know you're going to stick with it. But at the same time FB marketplace is generally littered with setups that people thought they were going to stick with and didn't. I still say if this is your first foray there's nothing wrong with a beginner setup to test the waters.
      You'd also be amazed at how many people I get arguing for bottom of the line logitech gear being good enough.

    • @javianbrown8627
      @javianbrown8627 Před rokem +1

      That depends on your situation. If you're not sure you're going to really get into the hobby you don't want to shell out a bunch of cash on something you may seldom use as using lower-end things can be great for getting your foot through the door as someone who doesn't have a lot of expendable cash.
      Being cheaper also means you can get something faster if it requires time to save. As a result, it can be worth it in terms of getting your hand on something that much sooner as and you can still save for the higher-end thing or you might even just get comfortable with what you already purchased (resulting in you not needing to upgrade) as bear in mind these things have severe diminishing returns in some cases.
      It's a similar logic to hire purchase where you pay more in the long run but you get your hand on the thing you want that much faster, you just have to consider your situation and find out what works best as there is no one-size fits all solution; bear in mind the cost and time differs by region in some cases. Not only does your job determine your income but also what country you do it in
