Me watching this video 2 years later: Oh, it's $4K now.
Its only $2850.00 plus you get a lot of upgrades that this guys rig doesn't have. The sfu gear boxes are a $450 upgrade. You can get a H2 for $1950.00 then upgrade later. IT still the cheapest way to get into motion simulation. Just bought one myself Gran Turismo vr here I come, so excited.
This is really impressive for that little money comparatively. My only concern is reliability and durability of the motors, rollers, and pushrods. Otherwise, looks awesome!
I'm 6'4" 250...I would love a comparison of diff sizes and weights. I could see me taking this thing out for a session and it suffering if not rated for larger folks.
Though the items you mentioned gave me a heads up on what to look out for when shopping for one.
I would imagine that if you keep everything clean from dust and gunk, the bolts tightened, and the moving parts lubricated, you should be able to maximize its durability. I would look out for signs of overheating, bending, cracking, or anything coming out of alignment. Of course, if it's designed for durability, then it might not need that level of maintenance.
@@jbac5767 Same here. I am also a larger guy, so I would be concerned. The weight limit on this thing is 300 pounds. I am only about 25 pounds under that so...
its probably using industrial steppermotors. The should probably hold up fine.
Damn that thing is quite realistic, gets the old heart rate up I bet, I tried something similar in Vegas I had a ball. I'm sixty YO but I feel eighteen while running around the track in a simulator thumbs up for technology. 🇨🇦
you should treat yourself to 1 of these if you can, im sure someone will help you set it up even if you asked around on reddit. never too old my guy,
Dude if you can afford it, please get one for yourself if it makes you feel like that.
Rock on buddy
1armed ... Hey, sixty isn't that old anymore. I'm fifty. And, it's not what I expected. It is much better than I would have believed. Age is more of a number now.
If you can afford it, get one!
The lack of road feel could be because of some custom tracks don’t have that much road texture like other laser scanned tracks.
yeah it's literally because he's playing on man-made maps that were made for fun-drifting, not complete realism. He should have tried a track that actually has texture.
yeah 100% this is a mod track not a lazer scanned one , id imagine the Nuremberg or Spa would be much better than huntert park or what ever
He should try Sebring
Definitely thsts what I said always good to try stock content sometimes because mods are obviously not good sometimes depending on the modder
well its not 6 dof so any feeling of bumps would be very limited
I would like to see an update video on how it has held up - without being able to see it in person and watching the drastic movements on cheap plastic caster wheels that appear to have no bearings i would assume this thing will break pretty quickly.
I agree. It would be good to know how well it does for a user that weighs as much as an average American as well.

And a year / just before the warranty ends. It looks impressive in use, but is it durable?

I have had the same platform for almost 2½ years. Works fine. I only drive rally at high level so its definetly been through a lot. Its fastened to a large plywood board cause otherwise it would tip over. Still shakes around :)
Probably need 3 months just to get software tuned. Had the h3 for about a year.
There isnt much to it tbh, should last for a good few years
I could literally drive the same track for 10 hours straight if i had this setup.

I managed 9hrs on f1 2021 time trial getting bk into it after 4 yrs off. I certainly know Bahrain inside out now.
You'’d probably want to do more. Hell, I’ve been averaging 5 hours on Nurburgring ring most days (still in lockdown) & I fear thats only going to increase when my ultra wide monitor finally arrives.
You could really play the hell out of Desert Bus
DOF does not stand for Dimension of Freedom but "Degrees of Freedom", it means the system is able to move in 3 axes. 6 DOF means it can move in 3 axes plus rotate in each of them.
Sometimes 3DOF can mean 2 axes and 1 rotation etc...so in this case I think you have two axes and a rotation around Z axis.
A term that I believe was coined back in the 90s with Descent.
@@0525ohhwell no. It is a term that has been used in physics for centuries... coined in the 90s... people need to stop making up sh*t in their head and pretending that it is reality.

Fanatec Clubsport Pedals: 370€
Fanatec Clubsport Shifter V1.5: 270€

It’s still working just fine! And yeah people complain about the cost. But it’s like yeah you can buy a basic race car for that much. But then you need a truck and trailer. And all the expenses. Racing one night on the sim $0 racing one day irl. Minimum $3-400

Here is my long term take, I have had basically this same system for over a year, close to two years at this point. (technically not mine personally owned by my company, but I was responsible for setting up/fixing and have accumulated probably close to 500 hours on it). I work in the technology field, setting up can be a pain and if your not great with technology you might really hate yourself. Taylor states it was easy in this video and the software seems to be newer then what we have, so maybe the have made improvements at this point.
The first major issue we ran into was motors over extending and the position sensors getting confused. This would result basically in one motor freaking out or doing nothing at all. We ended up reducing the max movement range for each motor to stop this from happening.
Second issue we ran into was the arms that attach the motors to the seat would bend. We replaced these with stronger ones. (We had a ton of people use this some weighing over considerably more then 200 lbs)
Third issue we ran into was the power switch on the DOF control box stopped working, (maybe 8-12 months in) this was a pretty easy fix we just replaced the power switch.
Fourth issue was one of the arduino that control the motors seemed to fry. We have not fixed at this point. Basically whenever we turn it on now the motor will constantly spin in a circle. tried trouble shooting for hours and seems to be related to that specific port on the controller.
Fifth issue depends on the person, but almost every single person that used this setup with VR experienced motion sickness. Even for me the first time I used it I felt really sick, but after continuing a few more times it went away. Most people at work wouldn't get past this point and we had to set up a monitor for 90% of the people that used it.
Overall though, as stated in the video for something inside your house, not having to maintain a car, not worrying about crashing etc. This thing is an absolute blast and more then just a toy, this can be used as a tool to help you improve as a driver.
to the motion sickness point- if your setup was at a business and people were using it as customers/guests, it's likely that many of them didn't have much time in VR in general, which could be a bigger part of the issue than the motion rig and its software.
I know that VR definitely took me a good while to acclimate to. it probably took me a grand total of about 10 hours of play in standing VR stuff before my eyes and brain/inner ear all kind of figured it out and I stopped getting headaches or nausea from playing more than about 20-30 minutes at a time in games where you move around in 3D space more than your real life walking around in a room-scale setup. driving a car in VR with little or no prior VR hours would probably make just about anybody feel sick, even on a $30k motion sim rig.
just as the other guy replied: their motion sickness was almost guaranteed to be the VR.
Ive done a tonne of VR, Ive got hundreds of hours across a variety of game types.
But I cannot do driving VR, I get the strongest most horrible motion sickness after about 5-8 mins and I need to stop playing. its disappointing as I really wanted a setup similar to this.
Ive read that it can get better with acclimating yourself to the setup but damn, thats a hard road, Id rather just drive my own car
@@jward0071 Yeah, driving and flying VR is where you really need to acclimate. Some games that fit natural body movement or just have you stand in place don't screw with your brain as hard.
Besides that, the setup you were on and how it was configured matters very much. Getting it "just right" is no easy task if you don't have a beastly gaming rig. Inconsistent framerates, lower framerates (like even 60fps), anti-aliasing, motion blur, input delays even if imperceptible...
The only way to get cozy with it is to have your own headset with your own setup and it takes a couple weeks of maybe an hour a day before its second nature and not leaving you feeling a little off.
@@buzzyshizzle5188 no motion sickness for me, I think it depends on your brain, I have no motion sickness whatsoever even in DCS and Assetto Corsa (HTC PRO VIVE 2 4k @ 120)
dude ... great little informative video. Really liked how you presented it! Down to earth.
Hi Taylor, Thats a great video! How is the SIM holding up after a year or so? Im thinking of getting one but I'm way over in Australia and if the SIM breaks or has a fault it will take a long time to get spares/support. Did you use it much? Did you have any problems, if so did the manufacturer help out or did you have to chase them? The bummer is too, its nearly $900 to just get it shipped here!
The immersion sitting in this setup with a VR helmet looks incredible. Watching you/your body anticipating and counteracting to what you think will be upcoming G-forces tells me that very clearly.
I want this.
With vr you might just need small haptics to complete the sensation that your brain is expecting, which this seems it would be perfect for

lets you feel the texture of the road. I have a set of minipuck transducers mounted to my seat as well as at the corners of my rig. can't drive without it.
Swap that belt drive against a direct drive module and you complete
Go with another option.. seriously, unless someone comes out and changes my perception, the way Igor has spoken to me, you dont want to spend your money with these people.
Think we all do LOL
I think a racing harness would definitely help the immersion
That's what I was thinking. I feel like it would be a little nerve racking driving like that feeling like you're not secure. Idk tho, you might just sit down and be instantly used to it.
Definitely agree
@@matthewmcclain1316 they make immersion for seat belts. tightens them and releases and what not!

Thank you for this detailed overview! Glad to see rigs out there with a lower price and function well!
Little tip, buy a harness and strap it to the back of the rig on some strong springs. Then when you hard brake you will have the harness tighten up and feels so much better and more immersive
Kinda sounds like a good way to smush yourself
Attaching the harness to the seat mounting would be a great way; your weight being tossed around will do the trick more than enough.
I get the harness idea. Why the springs?
DOF stands for Dropping of Fritos. As in if you place a bowl of them on the side table how many are going to hit the ground.
Very cool just recently been thinking about purchasing a sim cockpit and this might be the answer. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Wicked! The motion even makes the VR capture look more like a helmut-mounted camera in the real world.
In assetto you probably get smooth motion only on laser scanned maps and official cars and not on modded cars and tracks, correct me if I am wrong
yep was thinking that my self
correct, all depends of quality of the mesh of road surface, same with ffb, on some modded tracks you can't feel road texture at all
assetto needs alot of polishing
@@tylermcguire2163 This has nothing to do with Assetto needing "alot of polishing", the modded tracks (crude physics track mesh, or in some cases no mesh) and cars are what needs polishing... did you even understand what was said
@sollostyles Well, the point remains: quality of source material (i.e. tracks and cars), regardless of origin (AC or third party), is more relevant to the overall experience than innate limitations coming from the game itself.
Let us not argue on irrelevant details plz. ;)
We had those at a VR arcade I did setups for. It was good, but every once in a while we had issues with the motors over extending and not working. But it was easily fixed.
the same as the 1 in the video or similar ?
Looks super cool Taylor. My biggest problem myself is any motion video so close to my eyes, I will start getting dizzy. I wished the game was without the VR, just like the arcade...with a big front screen.
Looks like a lot of fun! I wonder what I must do on my end as a developer to make my sim work with this. I have forcefeedback for windows but this motion sim would be awesome.
Id love a few seconds of your expertise to ask if you think you could ever get ForceFeedback working for MacOS? I’ve got windows on my MacBook but recently noticed most of the F1 20XX have a native macOS install as well as the Dirt series.. But Thrustmaster wheels will only work as an input in macOS, Pretty sure macOS sees them as a usb class complaint because theres no TM macOS installs... Again I can boot into windows but the games will run better natively on macOS.
Taylor Ray, you continue to amaze me today you made video games and a full motion simulator a business expense.
I've had the Professional P3 since Friday. Unboxed Friday, Set it up Saturday and Sunday, Tuned it on Monday and Tuesday for a few hours for all my cars and WHAMMO...racing like a champ on Wednesday. I have vr and play assetto corsa and American truck simulator with an 18 speed transmission. you develop a memory real quickly on where the shifter and buttons and stuff are.
also no you cant see anything but the game while in vr
Yes yes, the blind approach dex and apex. Gotta love it
I would recommend the DIY route, which I did.. COULDN’T be more happier! I modified the SFX-100 open source actuator and added an actual motion controller over an arduino board. I am happy so far, and rather than having 100mm of movement, I have 300mm of movement. I also went with 10 degree ball screws rather than the 5 degree ball screws it was designed with.
Now I can have more movement when I fly around, and less movement when I am driving. DOF is really over priced when you look into DiYing your own platform. Xsimulator is out there and they have tons of useful documented builds.
FYI, DOF as in 3DOF and 6DOF means degrees of freedom.
How much did your DIY motion sim cost? (Only the DIY motion sim itself)
"I might have hit the wall" lol :P
Man this is dangerous to watch. Trying to hold off on getting another sim until I move into my own house. But you have me wanting to spend some big money 🤣
Racing Games are the best VR experiences you can have as of right now. Combined with a nice motion sim you can just stay stationary while feeling like you're somewhere entirely different.
Did you have to do a special setup to get the VR working correctly? I have the same setup, and the VR is an HP VR headset. My biggest problem is that between SIM, steam, and Assetto Corsa, I ended up sitting outside the car or in some odd positions such as the seat facing the passenger window after driving for a while. I even tried WITMOTION hardware to compensate for the VR but it only worked intermittently. Would love to know what you did for it to work so well as shown in the video.
get a harness too, that will help immerse you
I'm really curious how the rig is holding up after a year long (ab)use. How is it doing now?
For my taste the shift pedals are too far of the steering wheel.
And FYI, an F1 car pulls over 5g in some cases..
Nice review 👌🏻
and 40-150G when they kiss the wall :D
@@robinbleus9645 pov: copse moment
There’s tons of comments above of users who have had this for years and everyone is saying that it is holding up nicely and giving no problems at all. Apparently it’s really solid
@@spliifd id hope so because it went from 2 grand-ish to 3-6 grand for this thing. Better be solid for that amount of money
@@spliifd Thank you for this!!! 😀
The F1 part actually made me smile. Great job bro! This is amazing. Nothing like this in Australia, price point wise :(
How did you synchronize the motion of the seat and the vr motion input so that your virtual head isn’t flying everywhere? Cheers !
So I'm curious, especially with the yaw moving your angle around, doesn't that mess with the orientation of the real wheel and pedals vs what you see in game? What I mean is the game expects you to remain in the same physical position in VR so as the seat moves around aren't you effectively moving around in the cockpit of the car and the wheels and pedals are moving out of alignment with the in game representation?
That's what I'm thinking
man. i was just controlling my urge to get a simulator and then this!
Am I the only one that can't wait to see more of ben's LS miata? looked sick in Bode's video and looks even sicker drifting!
more miata
I saw a onewheel in the background, so I trust you. Solid review.
Dope video, these are sick and the fact that this one was around $2k is all the better.
