The American Song Contest in a Nutshell

- Some other things to note about the contest:
Europeans can vote with a VPN.
There are a few really big stars, but there are a lot of really small people participating. And many small acts are winning over the big stars which shows there's a lot of balance. It's nice not to have the stars dominate everything.
The First Heat was really good and then everything got boring because they had some heats full of nothing but ballads and/or country music. There was a lack of genre balance in some of the later heats.
It feels like the Europeans set up the staging for the first heat, you can tell looking at some of them, and then it's like they left because they thought they could trust the Americans with the staging. Spoiler alert: they couldn't. The staging is so boring for most of them. You can tell the difference by comparing the entries from Heat 1 with the entries from Heat 5. BIG difference.
The postcards were really cool. They gave you fun facts about the states and more info about the artist, who they were, where they lived, their story, etc.
During the intermission, they quizzed some of the artists on small state facts. That was cute.
It’s weird how they always cut to the hosts afterward and they’re like: Every song is SOOO Good! You can tell some of them are just being polite. Typical American. Meanwhile, in Eurovision, you can hear Graham Norton ripping on certain entries. Not here.
The show actually listens to everyone’s complaints. Everyone on the internet complained so much about how confusing the rules were, the next heat they explained everything. Everyone complained about all the commercials, so they balanced it out more next time. Everyone complained about all the white men advancing? In heat 5 the Jury picked a girl. People complained about New Boot Goofin failing, so they brought him back, making a special wildcard spot for him.
Two failed acts can return, and it must be done by streaming their music on Spotify. Yes, I think that is a dumb system, but if it brings cool entries back, I'm not complaining.
Everyone has 10 people on stage. Yes, it feels really crowded. No, I don’t think they’re going to stop.
The performances in the Semis are different from the Heats. Which I think is really nice because you don't have the exact same performance and it makes you actually want to watch both the semis and the finals. - Zábava
The way American kpoppies will abandon their home states SO FAST for Alexa
i actually know the person from my home state and i still would have voted for alexa, she deserved it lol
AleXa was the only reason I even heard about this competition so YUP! 🤣
@@hopefullycosplay ah kinda true too. As a European ESC is kind of a tradition but I still didn't hear about ASC until a week before bc of AleXa.
abandoned Texas for her lol
ofc im not voting for florida 💀
AleXa slayed, she always does. Watch her other mvs like bomb and revolution
don't obsess that much

respectively, her best and her best song.
AleXa slayed all the way to the American Song Contest Finals!
@@TheLegendaryMovieCritic SHE’S IN THE FINALS??
As someone who has been with AleXa since debut, seeing her here makes me so happy
I feel she is the only one who had a decent song and I personally felt she had the most experience on stage+ her charisma and stage presence was off the charts
I am slightly biased, but after seeing the rest of the performances, I loved hers the most
Same here, I was also voting for her. :D
exactly the same here i love alexa so much and she slayssssssssss
Seeing this compilation there are some with decent songs but Alexa indeed offered the whole package, not only the song.
seeing so many people who arent kpop fans supporting AleXa in the comments makes me so happy. been following her journey as an idol since 2016 and it's so cool seeing how people outside the kpop community are loving her as well
Maybe because "Wonderland" was only quality song in that crappy contest
I've been a huge fan of kpop since 2009...I had never heard of Alexia until today. I guess because I find 99% of American music trash nowadays so I don't keep up. However when I saw Alexa perform Wonderland I was 1000% impressed. I'm so glad she won...not only for her....but for KPOP in general. The chorus in Wonderland is as catchy as any song I've ever heard. And her performance was a masterpiece.
I too, will eat my shoe if AleXa doesn’t win. Seriously, her presence is no joke and that’s the perks of kpop; all artists have a lot of amazing performances to offer and I’m glad AleXa was given a chance ❤️
don't eat your shoe!
She won so no shoe eating today lol
Yess i know and I’m so happy for her 🤧

As an American fan of Eurovision who is also enjoying ASC I really enjoyed this video. I laughed a lot! And being from the state that sent Kpop and a Kpop fan since the early 2000s even I’ll admit that I was stunned when I saw AleXa was representing Oklahoma! My sister and I both were like: “ummm Hanson, Garth Brooks, The All-American Rejects, Carrie Underwood, Kristen Chenoweth, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Leona Mitchell, Jacob Sartorius, Greyson Chance are all people here know and they pick someone whose popular in Korea?” Turns out, though, there’s a large Kpop fanbase in Oklahoma (as my niece has pointed out to me since she’s a Kpop fan). So just goes to show how much I know about the people in my own home state! LOL
Lmao! That actually made me laugh. Like they were right, we really did send Kpop lol. I'm really glad Alexa was chosen to represent us too. I'm so glad that even though she promotes in Korea she hasn't forgotten about Oklahoma/
Actually, Alexa isn't that popular in Korea. People sleep on her talent so this program is her chance for recognition.
Im actually glad OK didnt send any of those folks because clearly there's an oversaturation of country singers in this competition already. AleXa stands out!
AleXa has much more overseas success.
She's been a performer since high school days! She was a Jenks Trojanaire which is their varsity show choir and they have won many competitions. I only know this because I'm currently a junior at Jenks and I'm in Vocal Music lmao.
Im also the only one in the class who actually watched and supported AleXa since the beginning of ASC.
Lowkey only tuned in for Alexa, and she’s eating everyone up as expected
Who needs eurovision, we have eurovision at home.
Eurovision at home:
Nothing beats the real Eurovision 🇳🇱
NAUURRRR
So excited for Eurovision!
@@jtb357 TRUE
asc is kind of weird to me like,,, the whole thing about esc that makes it so exciting is that you have so many different cultures, traditions and languages. this just doesn’t have that charm at all. though there were a few absolute banger songs!!
Tbh though, I haven’t watched the show but I think one big misconception I see a lot of people make about the U.S. is assuming it’s all just one giant culture but it’s really not. The US has a ton of variety of culture. The culture of California is extremely different from Texas which is different from New York, Florida, Idaho, etc.
You’re right about the language thing though. Would be cool to hear songs in different languages.
They might not be identical but there definitely is a common culture thread that unites all of the US, which doesn’t really happen with Eurovision. The US definitely has the power to produce something more exciting and make a True American Song Contest by doing it continent-wide. They just didn’t want to 🤷🏻♀️
@@xsotax omg you're so right!!
Lol I know this sounds dumb it is just dumb but I never knew the US had a culture
I think it could work, if more acts were less generic pop
at least you can say they're all singing in their country's language 🙄
Omg I love this comment
Actually in the US there’s no official language
Arizona? Or does Spanish count as a US language.
@@unlimitedcuriosity4573 I'm pretty sure it's English 😅
@@myra0224 like the majority of people speak English but the U.S haven’t got a official language

Oh! They sent the Kpop star from Tulsa for Oklahoma! How fun!!
I have to watch her performance now!
Her name is Alexa and she is AWESOME highly recommend!!!
@@amyw2625 I looked her up after watching this and shes really good ^-^ I don't usually listen to Kpop but shes pretty great and I love supporting a local girl xD
@@brigetbirbaew yasssss!!!! She is one of my favorites!
AleXa made it all the way to American Song Contest Finals!
@@TheLegendaryMovieCritic SHE DID AHHHHH YES!!!!!! IM SO PROUD!!!!!
I will NEVER understand why this whole thing was spaced out over weeks with nothing happening in between, or why it aired in direct competition with American Idol. While some fun definitely came out of it, the ratings it got were abysmal. I forgot it was even happening til it was already over because there was no promotion for it anywhere outside the US or online.
Weird and half assed, like the producers wanted it to fail.
AleXa REALLY deserves to win, her other songs are incredible to. If anyone is thinking about becoming a fan of her I recommend listening to Xtra by her. So good.
Honestly when I saw AleXa`s performance I thought: Wow, this ASC thingy is fire, we must be loosers, how often does the ESC produce something so great ? We should allow more people on stage as well. Then I saw the rest of the entries and I realized America understood the assignment, this is really American Eurovision and 15 people on stage can be overwhelming when it is not AleXa, of course. I hope she wins and they invite her in Torino.
that won't happen because there's not enough time between the ASC final and ESC
@@yaek5789 They are almost a week apart, plus she doesn't have to compete, she could just be an interval act.
AleXa will probably win the contest, so comparing her to the entire Eurovision lineup seems very unfair.
Also ESC 2021 produced multiple really good performances and songs (e.g. Italy, Ukraine, Finland, Switzerland, France)
Eurovision has way more ethnic and unique songs than ASC, so if you prefer ASC you probably just have a very "american music taste" (pop/country)
In the end its all personal taste I guess (this is not meant to be offensive)
And btw I disagree with removing the stage limit from ESC because in most cases it backfired for the songs here.
@@euroguy6786 I will say though that I think ASC's stages are better than ESCs. Yes the stage is small and ESC still has amazing stages, ASC has a huge variety of stage concepts with almost every song. The number of people on the stage really depends on the staging. Wonderland does great with having more than 6 while other don't and songs with only 1 person on stage are still nice.
@@yaek5789 ASC ended the same day ESC started: yesterday.
this looks more like a competition to select what song goes to eurovision to represent USA than anything else
ASC feels like it has 1/3 of the budget of melfest 🤭
@@flyingflamingo8773 because it probably has😂
We and NBC all know that the only reason they have 50% of their viewers is because of AleXa 💀
I appreciate the effort but not even this can convince me that ASC could be a good idea. I'm gonna stick to Eurovision and never look at ASC again xD But again, the video was nice and I laughed a lot, your jokes were good!
Super agree
Alternate title: I watched the ASC so you don't have to.
I actually liked this
I mean, we got New Boot Goofin' out of it, what more do you want?
Will you take a look at the Canada one next year?
Pre-recorded *backing* vocals? Mary, Eurovision has pre-recorded backing vocals. This is pre-recorded all vocals.
AleXa's song is the only one that will be remembered from this xD
I say we all just stick to Eurovision...
The main problem with ASC is that a LOT of entries were snubbed for country songs that pretty much had very similar vibes sans like two or three. The more charming entertainment was paid dust and after seeing who was in the finals, you could see the winner coming a MILE away lol
I had to pause multiple times because I was laughing so hard at some of your comments. There are a few songs that I have thought would work really well on Eurovision. The first night I watched I felt it was very “American”, but with a few songs I really liked. It’s grown on me. It is it’s own beast. Hopefully they will learn from the first season and it will improve. My favorite acts are the ones with a more international flavor, and I am hoping Oklahoma wins. I haven’t been following the talk surrounding it, so it’s nice to know she’s the favorite to win.
Watched this to see what you'd say about AleXa and I was not disappointed! 😂😂😂 As someone from OK, I was more than a little surprised when I realized our entry was one of my favorite kpop idols. And it's especially sweet since we now know she won! 🙌
AleXa is the best artist which is why she won American Song Contest period!
Look I’m biased towards Alexa but shoot her song and performance devoured every other act. Wonderland was not a performance, it was an EXPERIENCE.
As an American fan of Eurovision, I love this video and I must say that it is extremely accurate.
I've been with AleXa since debut, very happy to see her here and how much success she she has gained
The point of Eurovision is to promote unity between different nations. What’s the point of ASC? Capitalism I guess. 💁🏼♂️
There was literally commercial break between every act. If that doesn’t scream “capitalism at its finest” idk what does.
@@flyingcreature2173 What?!
@@jonasholzer4422 they were agreeing with the original comment
I think ASC season 2 is unlikely to happen especially the first season only have very few good songs (4 of them are from week 3) but if season 2 happened they should make the songs better and diverse (less country music pls)
honestly what would solve this is if they didn't make the artists hand over the copyrights of the songs to capital records. this was one of the clauses that i found while actually going through the process, and judging by the songs we had, i'm willing to say this is the exact reason why we got what we did
and for the country music, the south and midwest do be country stans sadly
less commercial breaks would be nice too.
That literally makes no sense, most contest in the earlier years are never good, but as time progresses it gets better and better. If everyone has a weak mentality like this, then contests wouldn't reach the quality that they have now.
@@chantetm4405 And if they diversified the juries more. The same song with different lyrics got voted in every single time.
So far it gives the feeling of a national selection for a struggling country in Eurovision. 3/4 good songs, a few catchy ones and bland otherwise (seems even more obvious because there are so many participants)
Oregon and New Mexico really encapsulate Eurovision's spirit. Wyoming as well, very Eurovision. If AleXa wins it's gonna be funny, considering I've known her since her debut (because of Kpop). I really liked New Jersey's stage, quite original. Delaware was quite good btw.
The Michael Bolton slander though🤣 Isn't he like 70 let him breathe his last few breaths in peace😭
Alexa carried the hole show.
AleXa and Ryan are my top two. If neither of them win i will riot
Ryan is new boots goofin guy btw
I heard about this recently and completely forgot about it lol. Eurovision looks so strange and cool, and I couldn’t believe how many BANGERS came out of that. So I’m happy to hear that we were doing our own version. Sadly I never got to see how it went. Hopefully my state put in something cool.
It’s still happening! Semi Final 1 just finished a few hours ago. SF2 is happening next week and the finals in 2 weeks.

Thank you for letting me know about this contest, which I did not know was a thing. Especially appreciated your comedic take :-)
The sheer amount of salt in this video is astounding
I loved seeing a Eurovision fan's take. I was curious, since I haven't seen a Eurovision Song Contest! Also, New Boot Goofin was catchier than it should have been. It makes me laugh every time. I started watching because of AleXa and enjoyed the whole show.

this cracked me right up! and i agree that jake'o was the most underrated of them all, that boy has star quality
I only watched Alexa's performance on the show
American Song Contest who???
As a personal friend of jake’o (wi) for many years, your comments made me laugh hard 😂
See I am an American Eurovision fanatic and when I heard there was gonna be an asc, I shook my head in dissappointment
But tbh: this isn't the worst it could've been (my strategy was to just watch the semis and watch the final cus too many of the songs were just *bad*) I am in love with Texas and Oklahoma, and I really like Georgia and North Dakota too!
0:59 I've lived next door to Portland my entire life and I can also confirm that.
Their slogan is "Keep Portland Weird" for God's sake. They know wtf they're doing. 😂
Bro as an European ESC I can say that this is worst that eurovision
This is worse than ESC worst years…

@@flyingcreature2173nah this is still better than 2002
I'm from Oklahoma and when I heard about the show I thought, "Oklahoma's representative will probably be some country singer". I was totally shocked when I saw it was a kpop artist. I'm so glad it was AleXA, she represented Oklahoma well!
yeah alexa slayed as expected
I see some comments about the ASC about not being good and kinda monotonous and all, and yeah, to be fair, the songs this year kinda reminded me of the early 2000s ESCs, where the ESC was stuck in its own bubble. There are some nice songs for a show like this in this year's ASC (AleXa, the New Boots Grovin' guy), and you gotta still give credit to the artists on stage. Their music might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I mean, it's not like the songs of the ESC are always great and groundbreaking and stuff. Give it maybe 2 or 3 years, and I think the ASC will attract some really great bangers and most of all: more diverse genres (which, to be fair, is way easier to accomplish in Europe, but doesn't always hit the mark).
It does help in my eyes that Michael Bolton takes part in this contest. Some artists probably need someone really big and iconic to perform well to maybe join themselves another time (like Ilse DeLange for the Netherlands, who didn't want to take part in ESC, because she thought that she wouldn't place great anyway because it's the Netherlands. However, when Anouk, a big Dutch star, got a Top10 spot in 2013, guess who represented her home country the following year and secured 2nd place. At least I read that many years ago, I don't know if I remember that correctly).
your comments gave me the graham norton realness i was after

It’s hard for me to choose between Riker and Alexa cuz I’m a kpop stan and have been for a long time now but I grew up listening to R5 since 2013. So Riker is part of my childhood. So if either win, I’ll be v happy!
WHAT??? SAME??? 😭😭😭
Basically no one watched the ASC, and I think a lot of it was that none of the artists were acts the people of the state voted in. With Eurovision people care partly because they sent those specific songs and artists to the contest, but in ASC we had our representatives chosen for us and the specific songs were revealed during the contest itself. Good for suspense I guess, but not good for investment. I hope they copy the European prelims next year if they do it again. And also does Oklahoma have to host now???
The issue is an NBC show from top to bottom, they choose for all the states. It's not like BBC picking the artist for the UK and RTÉ for Ireland and RUV for Iceland and so on
the fact that most of these people dont have pages on wikipedia and then they bring on MICHAEL BOLTON
Me an American: Wait, this exists?
They need to find their own vibe instead of trying so hard, even the fun songs take themselves too seriously. Let's see if they grow :)
" a country state in the middle of nowhere sent KPOP" I laughed skskssksk yes she was amazing
AleXa has other music everyone! Although wonderland is probably her best
I'm sad that this is the only one because YOU FORGOT MINNESOTA T-T
it's fine we're used to it :(
To be honest, I enjoy all of the semifinalists so far
New boot goofin was my 4rd favorite it’s exactly how you explain it. Very American but also very Eurovision in the oddity factor
they don’t understand ESC is a genre on itself
“How much YeeHaw do you want?” BRUHHHAJDB😂😂😂😂
i see why AleXa won LMAO
Would be great if you put the name of the state/song/artist in the corner or smth
Yes aliens. Native Americans literally lived in every state and even though highly prominent in there it is not the only state with tribes currently active. It would’ve been nice to see some representation though. Idk maybe they’ll include tribal reservations next time
There was North Dakota.
ALEXA WON, YOU GO GIRL
Literally only watching ASC for AleXa, I really hope she wins, I listen to wonderland everyday! ❤️💙
Looks like a load of the songs I liked got kicked out before the final just like happens at Eurovision 😭😂
"And the emo vote goes to..." don't call me out like this!!! That's my favourite song of the bunch. I'm apparently an emo forever lmao.
the only reason I heard of this show was because alexa was on it. I just thought it was for up and comers, I genuinely didn't realize they had famous singers competing 😅
i really don't get why the us had to recreate esc. like just let it be a european thing. it's never gonna have the same vibe as esc also barely anyone outside of the us even knew this was happening that's how irrelevant it is
Just blame the old Swedish ESC veteran producers Christer Björkman and Peter Settman. According to a Swedish newspaper they had no reason reason than “just wanted to start an American equivalent of ESC.” Even though they knew it would get a backlash from the audience and the die-hard-fans.
And the worst part is that next they’ll start the “Canadian Song Contest” next year, even though ASC dropped almost half its views by week 3. Not to mention ASC have so many negative reviews from papers and viewers.
Good news friend, you don't have to eat your shoe. :)
You said @3.52 "But can Europe do this?". The answer is sort of yes, Madonna and Quavo did this at the end of their interval act of 'Future' in 2019. Sorry to buzz kill. :p
Congrats to AleXa she's the best here.
Glad you didn't have to eat your shoe
i genuinely would only want a second season to see if anybody could top Alexas performance lmao
It's been a year now and (kinda) miss ASC, I liked most of the songs (surprisingly)

AleXa absolutely deserved her win! She slayed every performance! I don't care if it's "supposed to be a song contest". Most of the other contestants bored me. But AleXa gave it her all time and time again!
