I'm a conflicted man. My dad's side is low tier Scottish and simple Irish farming family. Stayed in Scotland (his dad's side) then moved to Canada on their own accord same with his mom's Irish side. My mom's side however has a more unintentional sinister side being an Ulster Scot background. My 5th great grandfather James Fleming was the first white settler in Elgin County Ontario Canada. The only reason he was able to do that was because of the money and connection to his ancestors. He was a direct descendant of the Fleming Lords that were placed in Londonderry Ireland by the British after they ousted the poor native Irish family who governed the area long before! Bleechgreen to be exact. I wish I knew more. All I know is he was a direct descendant of King James IV of Scotland through his last illegitimate daughter.
I love your stuff as you know. Keep it up!

First off thank you for this clip, not only is it fascinating it's also shown my family coat of arms. When my father passed I inherited all of his personal things and in his paper work I found our family coat of arms. I got it out and decided to see if it is legitimate and at the 9:40 time in your clip there it is, our family coat of arms with our name and it's identical to the picture I have. It's hard to make out the name but I can see enough to know it's our name. I'm unsure how to word how i feel about this, nothing i can think of seems right, but it's given me a solid feeling of connection to my ancestors. It seems strange to have such a strong feeling because of a picture, but there it is, it's how it makes me feel. Thanks again for your efforts here, it's given me a huge boost.Cheers Al

there are multiple families with the same surname, you must establish your ancestry with the lord lyon or earl marshall in order to use the arms legitimately. lots of scammy companies will do the bare minimum amount of research and find a coat of arms which someone once had who shared that surname, you dad could have been scammed and you can't use the coat of arms until you establish direct male line ancestry.

In Scottish heraldry, all bearers of that name use *variations* of the stem arms of that name (the earliest known arms of that surname, usually still used by the chief of the name). Clan members should not use the *exact same arms* as the chief of the name, who has the sole right to use the stem arms. The arms of clan members resemble those of the chief, but their particular arms have additional elements in them to make them distinct from the arms of all others bearing that name. Arms in the UK are still used as instruments of authentication in legal and business documents, so it is still taken seriously. Using the stem arms of your clan as your own is illegal in Scotland, and is considered a form of identity theft. Everywhere else it is just plain bad taste and shows the ignorance of the user. In the US it isn't illegal or unethical to assume a particular variation of your clan's stem arms by adding charges to the shield that are unique to you and your immediate kin, but you are best served by consulting someone well versed in the heraldry of your clan before doing so to avoid accidentally adopting arms that already exist. To avoid this I'd recommend that Americans use charges that are distinctly North American to clearly identify themselves as cadets of the clan residing in the diaspora.

This video, while interesting, goes off the point so much regarding Ireland. I will make a few points. Firstly, 90% of the coat of arms seen in shops/online are fake or not Irish. If you are daft enough to buy them without doing your own research....then good luck to you. Secondly, under Brehon Law anyone of a particular clan can use said coat of arms. Thirdly, the Irish never used coat of arms (in the sense of a design on a shield) but instead used banners. Fourthly, most Irish clans/families do not have their own coat of arms/banners but use those of the clan they followed into battle. This is the true meaning of a coat of arms/war banner. So, if you cannot, after a lot of research, find your coat of arms then search for those of the clan you regularly supported in battle. Thats how it worked.
