Oh! Professor, every time I hear you talking about Trancoso, I fall in love even deeper with that beautiful ancient city of my exotic country. Shalom, from Lisbon.
Thank you so much for all of your videos! I grew up Episcopalian and really had no understanding of Jewish History outside of the Bible. Wow! I can’t stop now. Your lectures on Ashkenazim are amazing and I’ve watched several multiple times. You’re a wonderful teacher and I look forward to your future series.
Certainly an outstanding and remarkable country regarding the history of the Jews! Also, a good look about you in more casual attire in this presentation.
Decades ago, I found myself visiting wineries in Alsace, Eastern France. I came across a medieval street, Rue des Juifs, in a beautifully preserved 14th century town. I noticed one stone house which had an ancient hollowed out recesss on the right hand side, a void that I surmised would have contained a rolled parchment of a mazuzah in its day. Rashi grew grapes, but did he make wine?
1:09 : " a casa do gato preto" (the black cat house"), in fact, the animal figuring and sculpted is not a cat (crypto jews had to hide anything linked to Judaism) : it is thought to be the Lion of Judah, symbol of Jerusalem and symbol of sefardic jews, knowed to be descendants of the tribe of Judah (and a few of them, Benjamin too)...see the emblem of the Synagogue of Bayonne (South West of France near Spain): community is called Nefutsot Yehudah, the exiles of Judah
Hello Dr Abramson, Thank you for your informative videos. Would you consider doing a video about the life and works of Moses Hess? Thank you and all the best.
Fascinating! I come from an academic tangent... looking at crypto-protestant elements in very Catholic Québec (the majority were likely "converts"). Looking at your methods, taking notes. Are there crypto-Jewish personal names that can be identified in the middle-ages? Sorry for all my questions: Could a "Jacob," shoemaker from the Netherlands, hired to fight for Britain in the Revolutionary War in the US, be identified as Jewish? Looking forward to the next videos, very interesting work!
Good questions, all--maybe I can deal with some of them in the Thursday Q&A. Just one answer for now: yes, there are definitely a handful of surnames that are frequently associated with Crypto-Jewish lineage.
Hey Henry - can you pls make a youtube video about the historical accuracy/some of the disputes over the Purim story and book of Esther - I think many Jews (including myself) wonder if the events actually happened. Would love to hear what you think about some of the historical conflicts within the persian royal linneage and how this impacts the validity of the story.
The inscriptions would have to be analyzed and dated by archaeologists in the first place. How old are they really? Are they pre, during, or post inquisition? Could the stones have been reused from earlier buildings? Was the location affected by the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755? There were earlier earthquakes in the area too, in 1321, 1356, and 1531, also another earthquake in 1761.
about RORO (resh vav holam resh vav holam) , read in the western way (i.e from left to right) my thought and other portuguese people with jewish background is as follows: "horror"...a kind of SOS message in a kabalystic way saying how horrible it is to be "new christian" or "crypto Jew", sitting on the fence, a horrible feeling.......
Sjalom. I am to late for the scat, scream but rabbi have had a sweet smile. Christian jews is also messiaans, insn't it? |||||On the knee, lay down the litle stones, road, listening to arrogance an disepointend choice of outer an watch into the eyes of an animale..........an let the stone for what it is......love is a better road.
Why would a Jew spend hours carving a nickname into the side of a house under the hot Portuguese sun? It is not jail graffiti, it must have had a serious purpose.

Shalom! It was a great visit. I plan to be back in May.
Todah Rabah thank you Dr Abramson.
שלום
The film 1618 is a very powerful depiction of this time period. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the Portuguese Jews.
Thank you for the reference!
another is about to be released , under the sponsorship of O Porto Jewish community in a few weeks : 1506 (the Lisbon pogrom)
waiting for this one as well, thanks!@@annickmathe9463
Super interesting!
I think so too!

Thank you!
Last bit at the end, that inscription looks like it says רוח
Discussing this in my Thursday Q&A
The reason I said, it’s that word is because of the ח not the _
Adorei este video, muito interessante redescobrir a cultura judaica em Portugal.
Obrigado!
another point about the "RORO" engraving: same guematric value as BAYT beth yod tav (house) i.e. 412
I hope to address this in the Thursday Q&A
Another inspiring presentation of Jewish history. Great video clip, Henry. Excellent job!!!!
Glad you found it useful
@@HenryAbramsonPhD Thank you so much. I love to learn about your people's history. Biblical, especially Jewish history are my favorite subjects.

The mezuzah scars are really evocative.

I think these carvings were used to represent mezuzot as some of the were done near doors!

I don't understand much you are talking about but think about it 500 years ago a person put the writing there and the message they put is alive today

5:13 same sign on the right, isn't it? But the first letter looks more like a ו. Or is it a ר as well?

On my list for Thursday's q&a
I see דורו… doro river?

the inquisition in POrtugal ended in 1821......
@@annickmathe9463 Well, yes, but seriously, when was it last time they clamped someone inside an iron maiden?
I think the inscription which looks like a רורו might be דודו.
I hope to talk about this in the Thursday Q&A

It seems most plausible that “roro” is a nickname:
