Very informative, thank you. I am israeli American, but for reasons not related to this war, I am living again in the USA. I can say too, that my father's grandparents were from ottoman turkey, lived in Istanbul, Egypt and Lebanon. As well educated as my great grandfather was in both jewish law and theology and in languages (he spoke 6 or 7 languages fluently) he would say that he was still treated as just a lowly jew, the dhimmi practices, the verbal abuse, horrible. Better than the treatment of the jews of tsarist russia, probably... but still treated as se ond class citizens in every way. Its very people don't understand this. The truth is the truth. The modern trend is for these arabs to rewrite history, teach that the jews were never really a significant force there in israel and that its all jewish propaganda... what has happened to tbe truth, what has happened to reality??..
Somehow another we have to learn to live together. .. just live together and everyone be ok with that.

I am from Mexico. We lost wars against the Americans about a century and a half ago. We lost territories, from Texas to California, about half of what was Mexico back then was lost. Yet most Mexicans do not sit an cry, we made our peace with the Americans, whether we were in the right or in the wrong, it doesn't matter. Whether we lost many lives and they lost many lives too, it doesn't matter anymore. I am from Northern Mexico, we could say my family can make a claim to Texas belonging to us, but I am not going to wrap some explosives around me and walk into a border check point and immolate myself, or take a knife and stab an American. Not at all. We made peace with them. We are friends, partners, family many a time. Americans marry Mexicans all the time. Millions of Mexicans live in the US and at more than a million Americans also live in Mexico today. And by the way, we know that before Texas was part of Mexico, it was part of someone else, the Apaches and many other tribes, and before them some other peoples as well. I guess it helps we are Catholic mostly and don't have a culture of hatred against anyone. It's complicated, but hatred does lead to dangerous places and situations.

It's not as rosey as you claim. Mexicans are often scapegoated by US politicians as uncontrollably crossing the border etc.
Your comparison fails because Mexico is an independent country. Many Americans with Mexican descent are proud of their American identity and have equal rights under American law. That's not the same for Palestinians not even close. Have you ever seen Palestinian children throwing rocks at the Israeli army when the Israeli army unlawfully encroach in their areas? The Palestinians want their dignity like any group of peoples want.

It also helps that neither mexico nor USA are theocracies. Puerto Rico is not a state either. The point remains. Puerto Ricans by a wide wide margine made peace with americans and marry with each other. Can we say the same of Palestineans? Two democracies happily coexist. One democracy surrounded by theocracies is much more difficult (king of Jordan, king of saudi arabia, king of .... vs electorally elected Israel prime minister ). 42 @@myspaceplays284

Dr. Abramson, thank you for covering this topic. I think there is quite a lot of material that isn't reviewed by Western and, to a pretty large extent, Jewish historians as well that details Islamic antisemitism developing on its own starting from Jewish rejection of Mohammed's teachings in Medina (Yathrib at the time). The word Dhimmi itself is a wildly misunderstood concept in the West as a lot of the times it is referred to simply as the "protected people" but the fact that the protection was from the sword wielding Muslims themselves seems to get glazed over. This is obviously an oversimplification and not every Muslim government was this intolerant. Just wanted to say that there is more to serious and rabid Islamic antisemitism than simple inspiration from Western sources.
I do agree with your assessment that "some" of the expressions of antisemitism in the 20th and 21st century do look like they have been inspired by Western antisemitism but that does not take away from the fact that Jews faced hatred and attacks for being Jewish from Muslims long before they were exposed to the Christian form of hatred against Jews.
Also, the fact that there were periods of peaceful existence within Muslim lands is no different to peaceful existence of Jews in Poland, for instance.
Lastly, thank you for covering the point about Muslims considering all land that they once invaded and ruled over as their own (all lands not yet invaded and ruled by Muslims being part of Dar al Harb); this also includes Spain and parts of southern France. It is inaccurate though that Jews would be welcomed as guests in the land of Israel under Muslim rule. A more accurate statement would be that the Jews would be accepted and tolerated as a subjugated people - no different to medieval Europe.
Once again, thank you for the video. I realize this was a brief video but I would love to see a series by you on this subject as this is of particular personal interest to me as a Jew who grew up in the Middle East among Muslims.

I would like to thank you for this educational video, and if you allow me to add what I see as a turning point in the antisemitism in Islam, which was the introduction of the Sand Qutb doctrine and later the presence of Hajj Amin Al Husayni (even before his meeting with Hitler). Not to mention the punctual blood libel in Damascus 1840, imported by the Cappucinos. Finally, as a Jew, I am also with a knife in my heart, knowing that men could be evil to the point of hijacking babies and children, and to the point of watching the silence of the world towards this situation. 42Dear Henry, as a Muslim I have enjoyed and learned from your content for a number of years. I wanted to mention that the incidents involving Jews pre and during the time of Mohamed were expressed in 2 ways, 1)God in the Quran is rebuking the Jews for NOT being better and more observant Jews ( not for just being Jews!) 2) then reprimanded them for being chosen and then missing the mark. As you know They are “people of the book”Mohammed kissed the Torah. All other wars were tribal conflicts (typical of the biblical style of brutality for its time) despite the Banu Kuraida incident there was concurrently other Jewish tribes who remained in peace and protected as in the constitution of Medina - proving it was not an issue of religion but tribal conflict alliances.
. Secondly when Umar entered Jerusalem he found that there was no Jews because the Locals had banished them so he commanded his army to find 80 Jewish families and requested they live there as he said it was important for Jews to be in Jerusalem! The issue Muslims have is the Idea of being seen as sub human Goem, and Netanyahus recent reference to Amalek. I hope you can explain these terms and how Some extremists Rabbis have justified horrible things too. This way you’ll have a balance of 2 videos, one about origins of Islamic antisemitism and also origins of Jewish Islamophobia

Thank you. I watched to the end. Found the last 8-9 minutes drew parallels with things I've been writing in a much less educated and much more simplistic ways for a month. I've used the analogy of America under attack from Mexico(Hamas) and Canada(Hezbollah) and from the sea(Houthis) and asked what solution people , who question Israel's right to self defense, would come up with to fight back. And also how they can distinguish a Hamas supporting Arab/Palestinian from a non-Hamas supporting Arab/Palestinian. I've also asked if by their logic, the Allies should not have bombed the Nazis for fear of killing innocent Germans, and if they'd done that how these folks think the war would've ended for Jewish folk. I've suggested people read the Hamas charter, Article 7, also. I did not realize there was more than one version until you mentioned it. No one wants innocent children to be hurt on either side, but if Israel does not defend it's citizens, it will cease to exist. I also find it disconcerting to see young people wearing Kefiya and crop tops(which wouldn't be okay in many Arab lands), and taking selfies with cell phone cameras(Jewish invention) while wearing Levis(also a Jewish creation), and posting those selfies on their computers(also a Jewish invention). The lack of their awareness of how many Jewish inventions, conveniences, and medicines, etc. they take for granted, while calling for policies that would see us eradicated, is staggering. And to see Jewish people joining them is beyond painful. 42

Dear Henry, thank you for another great video. I appreciate your ability to present the history context of antisemitism in an unbiased and empathetic way. Sharing your desire for peace and the release of the hostages, I unfortunately do not see any hope for a peaceful settlement under the Netanyahu government. Hamas is a terrorist organization, but the reckless behavior of the Israeli state only jeopardizes to destroy all of the hard fought progress towards acceptance of Israel as an island of Judaism in the muslim world. This is a very precarious position. I hope that you will make a video (or series) about the different strains of political thought among Jews throughout the modern period in Europe and Israel. 42

    Kia ora Dr Henry Abramson,
I’ve watched and enjoyed many of your teachings. I’m gravely distraught with what is happening to the Jews, Gods chosen people, in today’s troubled world. I’m sorry for you, your family and friends of the Jewish community. Know that I am one of many true Christians, who know and follow the teachings of Gods Word, and who believe in His sovereignty over everything that is happening, and going to happen, and that my, our, prayers are with you all at this extremely trying time 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Professor Abrahamson, I truly appreciate you as a scholar and being a scholar myself I can relate to the need for accuracy when treating data and facts, in this case historical facts. I dedicated some time to studying the subject of nationalism and my understanding is that it is very difficult for nations who are in the process of statehood consolidation to accept each other. This is to say that the problem in my view is not so much land and territorial dispute, but the ingrained understanting in the West that the Jewish nation should be granted ststehood at the expense of Palestinian statehood. And yes, obviously a State is more capable to protect a nation than a nation without a State is able to protect itself from "other". So, in short, why does a State like Israel, which is so heavily armored and supported by Western countries, keeps Palestinian children and youngsters under siege and subject to such inhumane mistreatment. The State of Israel is entrenched in nationalism. This is what is preventing Peace in the region. For as long as it does not respect International and Law, it is putting it's citizens at great risk. Palestinians will not sit and see their children being slaughtered either. The world is watching. The younger Western generation does not have a memory of the Holocaust. Palestinians love their children as much as Israelis do.

Is that history of antisemitism similar to Western Europe or Islam? Because in this video you keep saying “Christian lands”, so do you mean Eastern Europe (or even Latin America) as a part of that or are you referring to Western Europe with that designation? Second, maybe I missed it but you don’t seem to mention anything about the way Jews are portrayed in the Quran, a lot of which didn’t sound good to me, (although I don’t know enough to say) and any role of that, (if any)? 42

Thank you for your very thoughtful presentation. Towards the end of your presentation you hit on a very significant point I.e., the lack of any historical knowledge on the part of those espousing the Palestinian cause. This is part of a much broader problem I.e., that many in the US who support the left are in reality unread and often despite college degrees know almost close to nothing about the world they live in. What better proof of this does one need than to look at the support given to Hamas by gay people. None of these people realize that if they lived in Gaza under Hamas they would be imprisoned or put to death. Throughout history those who won the wars dictated the terms of peace and it is only Israel where the so called civilized world has a problem. Thomas Sowell explains this phenomena as resulting from envy and of course it makes sense. By the logic of the Left, the US, after the attack on Pearl Harbor should have asked the Japanese to the peace table and asked forgiveness rather that deal with realities. 42

I enjoy your videos. I am truly sorry for the way Catholics have acted in the past and the way some may continue to act now. They are only Catholic by name and for that, we need to pray for them. Anyone who is hostile or degrading, humiliating, or hurtful in anyway to another is not practicing the faith the Lord taught us.
As Catholics we believe in practices and faith with observance of works which is obedient to the full and true teaching of the daughter Church to Judaism as she was birthed forth from the Jewish High Priest, but a Mother Church to all in its teachings. All consecrated Catholics are required to pray seven times a day: some pray at 3am, 6am, 9am, noon, 3pm, 6pm, bedtime. All are encouraged to pray a daily schedule. Before meals, Mass, special occasions, Novenas, ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, some of the Sacraments such as Baptism, Confirmation, etc. corporal acts of mercy and spiritual acts of mercy are other ways in which we live out our faith. We actually have more similarities than you may realize as Catholicism is based on Jewish tradition. Yes, Jews around the world are greatly mourning the brutal attacks, the condition and lives of the hostages: sick, elderly, babies, children, women, and men. We also mourn the loss of all human life and believe all life is sacred to God and we acknowledge Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as our patrioarchs of faith, therefore the God we worship is the same as the Jewish God, and the same as our Arab brothers and sisters before Islam. We are called to close the gap between our faiths and customs and concentrate on what we have in common. Catholics recognize that Mohammed had spiritual gifts, but there are pure spirits and evil spirits, so Mohammad could not discern the difference unfortunately. If you look at the Ten Commandments Moses received, thou shall not kill, or covet thy neighbors good, these were both recognized in a time in history by our Arab brothers and sisters. Destruction of life, property, and the taking of hostages is a direct violation and requires repentance and sacrifice/penance. The spilling of innocent blood cries out to God as an abomination, whether Jewish, Arab, English, American, Welch, Norwegian , German, or any other blood. Unfortunately the orthodox islamist fail to know the history of their original faith to understand what the Lord expected of them. It is a time when all of humanity needs to learn about the Word of God in both the Torah and the entire Hebrew and Christian Bible. Only through the collection of full Scripture, will we learn what God asks of us, for the Messiah is the perfected way, the completion of our salvation story. Taken from Psalm 67, "May God be gracious to you and bless you, cause His Face to shine upon you, so that His ways may be known on earth and His saving power known among the nations.". Be at peace!!!
Numbers 6:24-26, "May the Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His Face to shine upon you. The Lord lift His countenance upon you and give you peace."

This video is more of a secular explanation of Arab/Muslim anti-Semitism: Competition for the same small piece of real estate. There is also a theological dispute, which is that the Jews rejected the prophesies of Mohammed, the founder of Islam, going back to his life in the 7th Century. Mohammed was personally insulted by this rejection, and his reaction thereto was particularly violent and bloody. My opinion is that this serves as theological basis for the atrocities that we witnessed on October 7, 2023. #42

The one thing that was most interesting is the Islamic thinking that once conquered by Islam, everything belongs to Islam forever, hence the hatred for anyone "retaking" land....buildings even, as seen by the Dome of the Rock on top of the Jewish temple and the Haiga Sofia in Conatantinople. My grandfather's family on my mother's side were German Askkenazi Jews who immigrated to Chicago in the 1880s....the Nathan family from Vallendar. I thnk great-grandfather saw the writing on the wall early on. My family are Catholics. #42

Completely with you on the idea of historical ignorance guiding many of the young "anti-Zionists." I noticed that the Jacobin professors in the colleges I've gone to replaced the scholastic approach with propagandist ideology, leaving young people in ignorance, dupes of the terrible force of Jew hatred. Thank you for the moral clarity you provide through the hypothetical parallel. Spot on, Dr. Abramson. 42

Thank you for another wonderful video, dear Professor. I feel your emotion and pain and I was crying at the great hatred and unjust intolerance that is shown towards the Jewish people. I have shared your video to try to convince everyone I know of the other side of the argument. I am also praying for the hostages and their families and this non-Jew is sending nothing but love and support to the Jewish people around the world and to the beautiful country of Israel #42

Whenever I watch one of your videos I come away with the sense that I have learned something new or, at the least, see an issue in a new light. Your fresh vision and insight, on any subject you cover, is a gift to us all. And I know that your visions and insights have come only after a lifetime of study. Thank you for the gifts of knowledge you pass on to your almost 100,000 subscribers.
As many commentators have said below, it is unfortunate that there has not been an Arab leader since Anwar Sadat, of blessed memory, who has had the vision to see the mutual benefit of a peaceful resolution of this horrific conflict. #42

Hi! I have a question... when you say almost all Jews are zionists, what do you base that claim on? And when you say Jews, do you mean in the vaugest sense? For example I know someone whos grandmother was jewish, but she really doesnt have any connetion to judaism, jewish traditions or the history of the people what so ever, would her claim of being either zionist or anit zionist count in your statment? I feel like people with very little cultural connection to "being jewish" would more easily claim to be an anti-zionist jew simply based on ethnicity. Great video btw! 42

      42 Thank you Dr Abraham.
I note that Maimonides held that, although Muslims are not idolaters, it is forbidden for Jews and non-Jews alike to observe the tenets of Islam, for Islam is neither observance of the Laws of Noah nor observance of the Torah - it is forbidden to make up a new commandment or a new religion.
My question is about an observation that there is in the Qur'an no trace of the Shem Hameforash as a name of Allah.
Considering the bestial manner in which Hamas murdered innocents on 7 October, is there not a case for re-evaluating Maimonides' dictum that Muslims cannot be held to serve a false god?

Thank you so much for this video. Ever since 7 October I realised how ignorant I was about the geography, history and politics of the region in question, so set about trying to educate myself on the subject. With that very difficult diplomatic dilemma you mention in mind, I think the United Nations and the western allies have a lot to answer for, for allowing the dispute to go unresolved for so long and not closing on the unfinished business of either a two-state solution or something else.

    • @gfriedman99
      @gfriedman99 Před 8 měsíci

The UN resolved the dispute in the 1940s. Palestine was offered a 2 state solution and they rejected it. Their leaders have rejected settlement offers many many times after that. Palestinians were given 4/5 of the land that was Palestine during the Ottoman Empire. That land is what is now the country of Jordan. However they are not satisfied with that because this is a religious war not a territorial dispute. Mohammeds teachings inform them to eliminate Jews and Christians (infidels) everywhere.

42 You are a gracious and wise scholar. I would like to know your thoughts both as a believing Jew and a historian as to the connection of this modern Islamic Antisemitism to the biblical account of the fraught relationship Hagar and Yishmael with Abraham and Sarah.

@@HenryAbramsonPhD actually, I believe the question is extremely pertinent from a historical point of view. It begs the factual question as to what degree Does Islam derive inspiration from the biblical Ishmael - both anthropologically and theologically ? If the answer is ‘ tremendously’, then one can view the unfolding events and their historical attitude to the Jews through this lens.
This comment from the Rambam on gen. 17,6 is actually quite astonishing.

I agree , we have a lack of knowledge about basic History . People don’t even know about the 12 tribes , the Land of Judea , Kingdom of Israel , the Holy Temples , the connection to the land for 1000# of years , how the Jewish people were colonized by the Romans , the British and on and on . Your channel is a wellspring of knowledge and wisdom # 42
