I used to wrap my Golden’s head in a towel and tie the knot. Sounds weird, but it helped shield her ears during lightning and thunderstorms. It became a way for me to tell a severe storm was coming as she would drag bedding, pillows, towels, clothes, anything she could over to me in a pile before a storm. ⛈️ Her doing that made me more than once pull over and sit a storm out, some weren’t too bad, but twice she saved my bum! The next day when I passed trucks turned over, wrecked, or stuck, I began to really appreciate her! 🐶
Not too weird, they use "happy hoodies" at dog groomers when they use the blower to help them stay calm. Thats a great way to tell if a storm is coming though. Wish i could take my german shepherd with me on my runs but fedex freight wont allow that in their daycabs lol
@@Specz187 - Happy Hoodies, I didn’t even think of that! Same difference
Never underestimate the instinct of a Golden Retriever. They will tell you all you need to know if you take the time to listen. One saved my life more than once. RIP Lucky, you were a great dog and I loved you so. Looking forward to seeing you again in the sweet by and by.
@@johnnyrocco - Yes, I have been owned my many dogs in my life, the Golden Retrievers are without question the brightest, most insightful, compassionate and understanding dogs. Sadly Paco passed a few years ago, and I’ve been missing her a lot.
Animals have sharper senses than humans - dogs especially
Truckers like you are the lifeblood of this country, thank you!!
I have a 60 pound Pit bull and I am his emotional support human. He was dumped when he was a puppy and I rescued him. He won't even let me go to the bathroom by myself. He's my bud. I'm sure Opie is your bud too.
Dogs rule!
My big boy pitte Clyde was a 90 pound baby…..loved all kids and thought they were all put on earth for him to love and protect. God how I miss him!
@@ClydesirotaI'm so sorry for your loss. I miss my Kermit so much had him 12yrs
My Dad was a cross country trucker bringing Maine seafood to the west. Americana was who he drove for, 70’s-80’s, the Julianno Brothers. I was so proud of my Dad. What you guys go through with the weather, crazy drivers etc., don’t know how you do it! Hats off to all of you! 🇺🇸💙🇺🇸
My hats off to you sir. Lord bless you!! Lord bless our truckers. We need you!!
Huge shout out for all truckers ! from the Oregon Coast
Good man, backbone of America...
absolutely!
When I travel cross country in my Camry, I follow what the truckers do. I’m no novice to interstate travel, and you guys have more resources for weather and road conditions than the rest of us have. When I see y’all pulling over, I do the same.
You have access to the exact same information. A lot of truck drivers are absolutely fucking clueless.
What do truckers have for information that you can't have?
@@joewoodchuck3824 I use the same apps that anyone can have. But we do have CB radios and drivers will send out alerts if there is something going on in the direction we might be heading. Also, my company sends out weather alerts such and high winds, dangerous thunder storms, tornado's and flooding on our ELD's. And I almost forgot, snow storms with white out conditions.
@@Look_What_You_Did😂😂😂
My aunt taught me the same. I think it’s a old school thing when technology wasn’t as advanced.
You truckers are totally awesome! Thank you for doing your job!
Every dog in the world should have an emotional support human😊 Have a safe drive!
Thanks to all the truckers every day !
A few years ago while traveling west thru Texas late at night it started raining so hard I could not see anything. In my pickup truck pulling a utility trailer. In a desolate area west of Dalhart I found a closed old gas station where we parked & tried sleeping thru the storm. By morning we found were in 8 inches of water like we were in a lake. Hardest rail I ever experienced. Incredible.
Texas can have ice storms that make the roads slick as snot. Much worse than any rain, sleet, snow or icing I’ve ever seen in any other state. (Well, I’ve seen worse snow… LOL!) 😊
Hey So I know you don't know me but I just wanted to say, thank you, thanks for all the hours days and weeks of trucking. Not many of you around and I believe the backbone of any country is the truckers. so Thank you for showing us what it's like. All the best from South Africa
3.5 million truckers in the US and since Covid there were allowances to bring in immigrants to fill the need for drivers. The majority are male, like 90% but still doable for females as I know a couple that drive. Many of them lost their pre diem/expense exemption during DT days but still can be a pretty good career path. Not all are as level headed, healthy seeming as this guy for sure.
I love the Iowa 80. The parking spots are big and so easy to get into. The atmosphere inside the main store is wonderful.
For me when you can't avoid it you keep rolling, sometimes, I get lucky but one thing is it made me feel good when driving for hours under heavy pouring rain, I got the best frame truck wash, all bugs gone, grill cleaned out, crystal clean windshield, tires clean, just makes my day.
The trick is like winning the lottery, get out of that rain quickly and right into dry pavement. avoiding that dirty mist when I could!
Thankful for those now and then when I do get lucky with a free truck wash!!
Be safe!!
1st time watcher. I too know what it’s like to be a 300 lb man trying to run thru a parking lot to avoid rain. That’s what made me subscribe. Still watching the video.
Just by the video title I knew you were at the Iowa 80 truck stop, I haven't been there in years. I retired from OTR in 2016 after 24 years due to declining health.
As a retired meat hauler out of Waterloo. When you mention Highway 20 it brings back memories. Ran from IBP/TYSON from Waterloo to N Nebraska City and Sioux City. Horrible in winter on old Highway 20 back then. Lots of hills.
You're not lying driver I haul for Gray transportation and the last snow fall I drove in was crazy winds usually scary
I’m a storm nerd and your channel popped up on my feed….loving your channel and your commentary. Stay safe. You are truly the backbone of America. Thank you.
my BROTHER DROVE A TRUCK WAY BACK IN 40’s TILL RETIREMENT, HE DROVE TO KANSAS CITY FROM HICKORY NC, FOR YEARS, HE CHANGED HIS ROUTE TO PAN HANDLE FL. WAS MUCH EASIER ROUTE. MY OTHER BROTHER ROAD WITH HIM ON A TRIP , SAID HE NEVER SEEN ANYBODY PARK A BIG RIG SO EASY IN SMALL PLACES. I KNOW HE LOVED BEING A TRUCKER, VERY HARD ON FAMILIES. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT. I DO ADMIRE YOU TRUCKERS, YOU HELP OUR ECONOMY THANKS.❤❤❤❤❤ STAY SAFE, GOD BLESS.
My good friend is a semi trucker for many, many years. He and I volunteered to fly to California and move a pastor east to Pennsylvania. We rented a Uhaul that had a 55 mph governor on it. We didn't realize it at the start. We took turns driving but for him it was just total torture. We drove from LA to near Philly at 55 mph. He was getting the screaming memes. But he educated me on what truckers do and how they do it. He introduced me to truck stops. I gained a big respect for truckers on that trip. I laughed out loud at how hesitant he was to drive into those truck stops in our rootin' tootin' Uhaul. Ha, ha.
At each stop he would eat a big steak and became so disappointed with me when I had to stop eating steak after the first three nights. Too much food! What fun we had. He ate steak every night for the entire trip. We still have laughs over it as we recall my innocence to the road. He always talked about the big truck stop on I80 in Iowa. Great video and it brought back all those memories to a bit of a greenhorn minor league trucker rookie.
Get him a thunder jacket. My dog is no longer afraid of storms since I got her one 😊
I am new to your channel, and have always had the utmost respect for good Guys. I use to CB many moons ago and you guys would look after us on our journey's and keep us safe. My Appreciation is far beyond. We are talking 40 years ago and I thank you.
Facinating. Wondered about all this esp after watching trucks pulled over during tornados. Thank you for all your hard work & professionalism.
Glad everyone is safe. That storm knocked out our power, blew the transformer. Wasn’t bad wait time with Com Ed, about 2 1/2-3 hrs
Luckily it wasn't 2 to 3 days I guess.
Isn't that Corn Ed? 😉
Im a firm beliver in " If you got it, a truck brought it"
Kurt, I have been watching your videos before you had 1000 viewers. I think this is the largest group of Guntren trailers I have seen. One thing for sure, Guntren is not broke. Money money money.
Thank you Road Warriors for all miles you travel and the necessary goods that you all of deliver to us! You so much!!
Just mound the potatoes in a cone. Best of both worlds😊. I'm a dork. Thank you for another wonderful mental image. That was some nasty weather. Glad you all were safe. God bless.
Oh it's a garentee you will get plenty more of those nasty images stuck in your head lol.

@@truckingwithschmidt7120what is that black circle on the top of your mirror? Is that a drive cam built into the mirror?
We stopped at that truck stop once while on a bus tour. It is a pretty cool place. We were there for about 1 to 2 hours grabbed a bite to eat I enjoyed just walking around looking at what all they had. Be safe.!!!
Used to pass Iowa 80 all the time, but I've never been in. In the early 90s I went to ISU in Ames and the parents were in Davenport. One year there was a Thanksgiving blizzard and Dad came to pick me up right as the storm hit. Zero visibility headed east on 30, it was after dark, and just a crazy trip.
Truly our last American Cowboys, and/or Cowgirls. Thanks for all you truckers do for us all, God Bless. 1776
Truckers, the last of the real western heroes. The life blood of the country.❤❤
What a beautiful engine with insane torque.
I'm in Texas and we love our brisket down here
In California we have tofu brisket flavor. ❤
Love it that I can be along for the ride. A lot more to it, and learning just how much watching your vids!
I spent almost 2 days last summer at the Iowa 80 Celebration. Had pork chops, went through the museum looked at polished up trucks etc. Had a nice time and planning to return this year.
This is life on the road . My wife really enjoyed Iowa 80 truck stop. One of my favorite also
Good luck Schmidt, thanks for the video!!!
I was westbound on I-88 in NY. Istopped at the Worcester NY rest area. Theair sufficatig, high humidity no wind and lots o f lightening. As I g ot back in my truck I could hear terrific wind and rain. The rain was so heavey everything was pitch black, the truck was pushed around by the wind and at times the truck seemed to stop when hit by a blast of wind and rain. I had about 50,000lb of granite monument on a48 ft flatbed. I made it to a fuel stop in Oneonta NY. Iwent inside nto get a cold soda and the cashier told mme a small tornado had been reported near Worcester,NY !!!!!!!!!
God Bless Driver Safety Always
I was in the sand box for 17 years. Glad I am retired, now. I am 72
Love the ‘red-lit’ dash. Seems like it would be easier on the eyes long term. Thank you for keeping America rolling! 👍
This reminds me of my 30 years over the road all 48 states been retired 2019 nice narration
Me to 2019 bailed out at 61.5 could not do it anymore. Refer out of Missoula 3.5 million miles hauling beer, meat and produce. Would not do it again ❤
Hey Kurt, last Tuesday was difficult for sure. I was empty leaving Valley City, ND, headed for Mankato, MN. It was a battle to reckon with. My boxer mix was trying to get into my lap the entire way. I'm glad to hear, you, your family and the pups are all okay. Stay safe out there.
I agree on the hail. I have been in many severe hail storms with my W900 and no damage so far. If I would have had a Peterbilt, I would have had to deal with a body shop at least a dozen times in the last 30 years.
They got some tough fiber up front.
Peterbilt.....
I ❤ to travel but for many reasons I had to give it up. Riding with You and “First Class” allows Me to enjoy the road again. Smooth Driver and Smooth Ride❤️🔥
Remember those days.drove in some god awful weather and some beautiful weather.loved every(almost) minute of it.when you are a driver, you gotta do what it takes to get where you are going,on time and not in the ditch.just part of the job.hated pulling an empty trailer in high winds and on icy roads.have to drive according to the conditions until it gets so bad,its time to park until conditions improve.visited Walcott quite a few times.
always loved reading in the sleeper with the rain falling in sheets and the wind howling. Iowa in January is plain old mean - the makers of Webasto bunk heaters should be beatified.
then came the diesel a.p.u. So long as i kept the snow cleared from around the exhaust it made life absolutely bearable under the worst weather conditions.
I live in Des Moines and last Friday nights storm was pretty crazy. Glad you come thru our crazy ones we have had.
Great journey. Just described. Thanks for all you do!
Kurt that was some nasty weather!! When i was truckin i loved a good thunder storm to go to sleep!! Well as always see you next time be safe i miss Opie!!😊😅
Thanks for the video trucking with Schmidt
Good drivin Kurt! Thanks. Safe travels:)
Great video Kurt, glad you got thru the storms Ok.Take care be safe.🤩👍👍
Thanks for the ride along be careful and safe my friend ❤
Glad you weathered the storms Kurt 🙏🏻🌪️
I drove through this, and another one about 2 weeks prior up in ND and SD. It felt like a child was constantly pulling at the steering wheel because the wind was so powerful.
Those winds on the Great Plains! I had a storm peel the siding right off my vintage trailer from behind driving East a few winters ago!
I enjoy watching you. We lived in Iowa twice. I've seen that enormously truck stop!!
Thank you, my dad drove for Roadway. He love it.
Hey Kurt Hope everyone is safe at home and you Be Safe out there 👍💪🏻✌️❤️☮️
My dad was from Knoxville, Iowa. Still have family there.
I see that you have seen your fair share of weather too, Kurt! Stuff like this gets me excited! Its like the perfect storm!
Awesome efficiency and professionallism doing your thing and living the dream. Great video, brought back a lot of memories.
Thank you for all you do and the video be safe my friend
Your opening scenes reminded me of a trip I made to FL down 95, with my dog in a pickup truck I was not familiar with and without the experience you have. I had to get off and couldn't find the exit -- it was lump in my throat time - but I did eventually make it.
Oh gosh the memories of car trips in the 1970’s. I’m here for the storm, but now I’m remembering how fascinating all the big trucks on the highway. And we hauled horses so my mom had a CB radio. Her handle was Saddle Tramp. Appropriate in so many ways. Anyway, I’m following you now. Very cool life.
Cool to see truckers still monitor Ch 19.
brother, we all flop when we run. Just be thankful the knees hold up. Love the road and love this content
THANKS
Rode out hurricane Sandy after making two deliveries of water in Delaware. I thought we were well ahead of it but my partner ran into some of the out lying rain squalls and chose to stop in a Flying J. When I got up all the lights were out in the trick stop and that was a once in a life time view.
Drive safe out there and take care and God bless you and your family and see you next time
Boy retired trucker ,loved I 80😊
New follower and sister trucker driving Reefer in a freight shaker. I love driving mid west. Be safe!

I haul in the Southwest now so I haven't been to Iowa 80 truck stop in several years. But I used to enjoy stopping in there to look through all the truck goodies. I DON'T miss dodging the tornado alley weather, lol.
I worked at Service Center at Iowa 80. Retired to Costa Rica. I don't miss those winters.
Yes. I remember you hauling ice cream to Georgia. Use to pick up ice cream in Lamars.
Greetings from Maine! Thank you for sharing!

New subscriber from Kansas. Yes, I know tornadoes! It is always windy in this state. I really respect all the truckers out there when I'm driving my small car. Mad respect. And I drive a lot! Glad I found your channel. Keep on truckin'
Storm chasing with First Class
I love that truck stop I miss driving
Just found you channel! Loving it! And THANK YOU for all you do!
Lmfao. The run in the rain was comedy gold
Glad you missed the worst of the storm. Safety first. We just had a semi- school buss accident here in Ks and only 3 minor enjuries. It was the dust blowing. Lucky all drivers were driving slow. There are some thoughtful drivers out there and you seem to be one of them. Stay safe Kurt and havagudun. Hop Opie is better when you get home.
Wow
