I wish the umpire would have asked to inspect the laces to check what is wrong about them. If nothing wrong, match lost. That would refrain some players to do that. It hurts the game that is more and more ugly and uninteresting to watch.

@@larbil26 well it’s tough because I‘ve seen many occasions where umpires argue that the fact that you challenge makes you lose the point if your challenge is wrong. In general I‘d agree easily to replay the point but then I‘ve seen in a match of radwanska for example where she was in the very same situation losing the point and even the supervisor didn’t change that call and that was only because she challenged even though the rally would have stopped regardless because a call was made even if it was overruled. So if every umpire makes different choices in the same situations how are you supposed to react and commit to the rules…
@@ctrI4 well in the Radwanska situation the WTA issued an apology to her because it was a wrong decision. Players know that if play is stopped by the umpire or line judge they can challenge just for the heck of it because play was stopped anyway

Just so everyone knows Coco Gauff was wrong and the umpire was correct. A server is allowed to catch an errant ball toss with their hand or racquet. The point starts when the server hits at the ball after it has been tossed in the air and not necessarily when the ball makes contact with the racquet. The difference being if a server tosses the ball, hits at the ball and misses contact it would still count as a serve and be called a fault.
Since Vondrousova did not use her racquet to hit at the ball but rather catch the ball the umpire was correct to let her serve without calling a fault. This rule was not recently changed as Gauff claims. I played someone in 2010 who served and missed contact with the ball and had to ask an umpire to look up the rule. This rule is at least 10 years old and most likely much older.
That's such a shitty subjective rule tho. What if the umpire subjectively determines that Vondrusova was attempting a underhand serve (it's obviously not, but grey area here)? Also, isn't it also another rule that if after the toss the racquet is swung but does not contact the ball, it STILL is considered fault?

If a player tosses the ball in the air, swings at the ball and misses contact, then it is a fault. The rule is pretty black and white. Either a player swings at the ball or doesn't. I've never seen anyone argue this rule in my 10 years of playing USTA, high school and college tennis. I've also never seen anyone argue about whether or not a player attempted to swing at a serve in over 20 years of watching televised tennis so I think the rule is pretty clear cut.

Such a rare case i have to think about. In my memory, according to rule:
The point begins WITH the toss.
To be clear, tossing is serving. Even still the ball in hand, is beginning the point. That's why underhand serve is allowed.
JUST

The best known is the wind, a bird passing by close ... Some disturbing noise ...
It means that you have to integrate that, with no noise or wind, once you start the tossing swing, you have to play , can't stop, the beginning of the point happened.
JUST traditional fairplay allow a single missed toss.

3 ?? I award the opponent that the next times ... max 1 missed toss will be allowed and... just because i am gracefull and educated about fairplay.
At this point, the opponent have to apologize and thank :)

As an Umpire i will directly consider the third as fault.
The opponent is ready, waiting, and ... Is it possible to miss 3 tosses and serve in less than 20s ?? ;)

OMG...they need to make a rule for the Sakkari krejcikova situation. The exact same situation happened between safarova and radwsnska...ball was called out and then corrected, Radwsnska challenged the ball which was indeed in, and the umpire granted the point to Safarova because ‘Radwsanska can’t have two chances to win the point’. Exact same scenario here, should krejcikova lose that point because she still challenged it after the correction? Or should she be able to challenge and if wrong, replay the point anyway. Cmon WTA, make a rule and learn it.
Absolutely. The call was corrected by the linesman, so they should have replayed the point straight away. However the Moment Krejcikova challenged the call is like she is saying that she doesn't believe the ball was in so she is stopping the point. If hawk eye shows it is out she wins however the ball was in so she is wrong and therefore loses the point. Sakkari was correct and the Umpire was wrong.

The point was already stopped before her challenge so it should be replayed. Sakari tried to steal the point and complaint that her opponent stopped the point. WTF

Correct; Krejcikova was allowed to double dip. Once you question the integrity of a point, you should lose that point, and your challenge, if you are incorrect.

This is a normal instinct to have, but if you think about it it may make the situation worse. These players are powder kegs that get set off by the smallest thing. Imagine how much worse the act would get if their opponent told them to shut up and play the game. lol I'm sure it would make for a great TennisAdvocate video, but the people involved would regret it. lol

@@SYYY13857 you're both right. Players being allowed to catch the ball with their racquet is a recent rule change. In the past if the ball touches the racquet before bouncing it was considered a fault. Gauff wasn't wrong for asking because that used to be the rule.
@@seanboulderformerlymel3000 If I remember correctly, this was the rule in 2016 in Canada (Tennis Canada's rulebook, which follows the ITF rulebook closely). Coco made her debut in 2018 so she's definitely wrong here.

Yeah, I think it was harsh to give her a racket abuse warning. Putintseva and other players always throw their rackets (without breaking it) and they don't get warned. I think some of the veteran umpires are a bit too strict.
If you look at the replay it rebounded and the ball girl had to avoid it so it was well worth the warning - if it hit the ball girl that would be a disqualification.
Why they don't have video cameras on that lines to tell for sure was the ball out or not? Why no replays?

Many correction has to made in tennis rules. Every shot should be checked real time without any need of player challenging like in football (penalty check/offside check). Side umpires should call out only if they are very sure, if they have doubt it should be notified to Video assisted umpire and they should check it.

Could someone pls explain what happened with Krejcikova and Sakkari? It seemed to me that S's ball was called out, then corrected to in, and K challenged the in call. By doing this she made her return null and the result of the point lay entirely on whether S's shot was in or out. Since it was in, I think it should be S's point. Am I wrong? TIA
what is Sakkaris problem at 4:08? the ball was called out, then the correction was made and that should lead to the point being replayed. Krejcikova challenging doesn't change that, it would only change the point in her favor if the challenge was successful
Apparently if the ball is called out and then corrected, and the player challenges the ball and is wrong, they lose the point, despite them not being the ones who interrupted the rally. It's a controversial rule that has created similar issues before.
If your player asked you to be quiet during a MATCH and only a match you should listen to them unless they're in danger of serious injury.

Please stop. 90% of the comments here are about Putinseva. I had to scroll through like 20 comments (other than yours) before I found one that mentioned Gauff.
Gauff was right to question the ref about her opponent catching the ball with her racquet because there used to be a rule that says that if the ball touches your racquet after a toss, it's a fault. The new rule that you can catch a ball with your hand, racquet, or let it bounce was obviously a among the ongoing rule modernization. Older players didn't have the string or racquet technology to control an errant toss on the racquet (try catching a ball on an old racquet and string and you'll see what I mean). Gauff was likely taught that it was against the rules by someone who wasn't aware of the rule change.
However, it was rude and imprudent to question the rule while her opponent was serving. While it was likely just immaturity, it reeked of a sportsmanship. The best way to handle that was to question the umpire on the rule during the changeover not during her opponent's serve.
Incidentally, Putinseva was also a beneficiary of the new rule changes as lacing her shoes would not be allotted "reasonable time." Under the old rules she'd have to play with the broken laces until the changeover or forfeit the match.
Gauff is not above criticism. Some of you fanatics need to stop acting like she is. It's annoying and casts a negative light on her.

Gauff was right. If the ball hits the raquet, it's called A SERVE. If the SERVE doesn't go over the net, it's a FAULT.
Actually the umpire was correct. Coco Gauff does not know the correct rule. You are allowed to use your racquet or hand to catch an errant ball toss. It is only deemed a fault if the server swings the racquet at the ball in a service motion. Thus, catching the ball with the racquet is permissible. Also the ball does not have to hit the racquet to be considered a serve. If a server tosses the ball up, swings at the ball and does not make contact with the ball, it is ruled a fault.
There is a very simple solution. Ban coaches from being present during games - they are not allowed to coach anyway during a game - so why are they there ??
