In Acquire, each player strategically invests in businesses, trying to retain a majority of stock. As the businesses grow with tile placements, they also start merging, giving the majority stockholders of the acquired business sizable bonuses, which can then be used to reinvest into other chains. All of the investors in the acquired company can then cash in their stocks for current value or trade them 2-for-1 for shares of the newer, larger business. The game is a race to acquire the greatest wealth!

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

    I'm a 65+ year old...my deceased buddy and I played that game a bunch in the 1970's

Thanks for covering this oldie. I've only ever known of Acquire by name, so is good to see what it actually entails.

I still think Acquire is really good. I'm sure part of it is nostalgia as it's a game I began playing in 1974. I can't imagine playing it with open stock/money info though. That sounds like the height of boring! I think my Avalon Hill version is a better overall production. It just has labeled color tiles that you use to designate the hotel chains as opposed to the plastic buildings but the tiles are black with white lettering so no chance you'll see through those (they go on a yellow board). Agree with your points and your rating but it's a game that packs a lot of decisions and tension into a short play time and with a small, easy to learn rule set. In short, it's just a well designed game that is a lot of fun!

I started playing _Acquire_ on the palm pilot ( _ack-wire_ ). Such fun!
Being pretty quick to play, multiple games mitigate the luck of drawing locations.

I used to have the old version. Will probably buy it. Can you do a video on good Shabbat games. I have teenage boys not little kids.

This is my all-time favorite game! I will admit that nostalgia has a lot to do with my personal ranking. Recently introduced my old 3M Bookshelf edition to some friends and they are still talking about our game of it weeks later, which shows that this is a good game. I'm really curious about the Tycoon mode and the flags and had hoped you would have gone over that in your overview. Currently I have two copies of the old 3M version and have been seriously thinking about picking this one up too.

Hey there - I'm the Producer on this version of the game from Renegade. The flags are purely cosmetic. Some people like them, others don't. You can use them or not. Tycoon mode is meant to be a bit more new-player friendly, with 3 payouts instead of 2 on mergers, which brings more cash into the game overall.

Great taste in games Chad! Acquire is one of my all time favorite games as well. Probably top 15-20. Definitely the oldest game in my top 20 as I've been playing it since 1974. It's the old Avalon Hill Bookcase Game edition. Sure there's some luck of the draw but it really holds up as you try to out think what everyone else is going to do. Enjoy!

You should have also said that Indonesia is much harder to come by, and the price point is considerably higher. But indeed a great game.
I love the eas of play of acquire. I have the AH version, which is very similar to the new one. Great game. Got us out of Monopoly some 25 years ago lol.

Only just discovered this a few weeks ago. Definitely holds up.

I think Dawn of Ulos would be a great alternative recommendation. I am sure you considered that, perhaps Acquire's influence was too similar?

Just picked this up as my collection felt naked without it. Basically, it was difficult not owning a game that has arguably stood the test of time better than any other game the last century.

How does this compare to big boss or foundations of Rome?

  • @JosephFlemming

I got an old 3M version of this game and we thought it was cool if quite dry… I traded it away because well, we have Foundations of Rome… but maybe someday I’ll get it back again with this prettier new version. It is a very obtuse and cerebral game though.
