I wanted to retire young enough to be able to do some of the things I always dreamed about! I knew I wanted to travel extensively and retire somewhere warm and exotic I sampled a ton of places in the Caribbean, Panama, Colombia, Turkey but set my sights on Thailand.

I'll be honest with you one of my favorite cities to visit in North america was Montreal but when I went there it was supposed to be 45f, but 2 of the 4 days were almost 70, and the other 2 were 85f. For me at 60 and still having a daughter about to be a senior in highschool, it's not the right time. When it is the right time, I do have fears. I need to have a few more years pass to see what the future brings. Some fears are: medical, hot climate, leaving friends, leaving all my connections I have made over a lifetime. We shall see how the presidential election goes as well! It also is not easy for stimulating conversation, like the song says "I get my kicks above the waistline sunshine". It is wonderful to be accepted automatically and have the pick of the litter too. Affection is very different, even in just hugging and kissing. The Thais leave their country to go somewhere else and it takes years to acclimate. There is a lot of frustration along the way, so for you Greeny who did not have that same experience, you in your life, it was the right time and you did not have fears, or worries about leaving friends, family, where you grew up. And if you did you got over it. It is a major move and it makes sense that there would be natural fear, even if it was Paradise! Just remember that even if you win the rat race, you are still a rat! 😊

    Greeny , I think your friend brought up a good point, America is great for the opportunity to make a great living , but once that “ living “ has concluded ( ie retirement ) why stick around , ya get a great pension for all your hard work , but as in my case, my pension is shrinking very quickly ( it doesn’t increase every year, but what does increase is the cost of healthcare, meds, co-payments on office visits , groceries etc. , etc. ) basically all the essentials in America are killing the retirees ( for a single person my healthcare just shot up to $320 a month, I’m spending well over $100 a week on groceries, my Verizon cable bill is $192 a month , insurance on my auto and home just shot up 30% this year and I’ve never filed a claim and I have a perfect driving record ,.. • @fastj1962
      @fastj1962 Pƙed 19 dny +1

      The toxicity you talk about is not in real life. Yes its the media and social media but if you live, you don't see that. I got into a debate with some guy from Alabama about trans athletes competing against females. (stick with me)
      First, I live in southern california, and for most of the last 10 years I've traveled across the usa monday through friday returning for the weekends. 30-45 trips per year.
      My kids lived in Beverly hills with their mom for 5 of those years so I traveled to LA commonly on weekends to take my kids out. In the last 10 years, how many times have I interacted with a trans woman in the USA? I'll answer, 1 time. It was in 2015 in Cincinnatti Ohio. She was my server at the Spagetti factory resturant.
      This guy the other day commented on the trans athlete thing on a video of a world champion woman. All I said is why bring that up? He insisted it was a real issue we all should be worried about. He said he was from alabama. In alabama, less than 0.6% of the people are trans femal or male. How many of those are female? half? (male to female trans) Of those 0.3% transe females, how many do you think want to compete in sports against genetic females? 1% of whatever that small number is which is almost nobody.
      He then turns it personal and tells me because I live in california, I want my daughter to compete against men.
      He failed to understand that I don't feel trans women should compete agains women. Never argued that point with him not once. Yes, people aren't bright on the internet...... lol
      Right wing media, and conversely left wing media want you to think about it eventhough your daughter is more likely to get in 5 car accidents on the way to her soccer game than play against a trans athlete.
      None of the boring politics that are toxic that we argue on facebook, TikTok, or CZcams effect any of us or give us a real reason to move to thailand, or texas, or California.
      Chose real reasons. If a real reason is you heard something on fox, or MSNBC then it doesn't matter where you move, you are gonna hate it.
      As I've said many times, No place is better than thailand if you want cheap. If you live where theres snow, thailand is 10 times better, if you are 50, hell any age and dating, thailands better if you stay out of the bars. Love thailand, take away the $ issue, or the women issue and southern california is 10 times better as a place to live. My daughters 28 and says shes gonna start a family soon, no problem, they can be without me 4 times a year for 2 weeks to a month while I visit Thailand.....

    Your friend (at 6:00 min) said exactly what I have been saying for years. America is a great place to have been born in the 50's & 60's. It is a great place to get a top notch education. It is a great place to build a career and make money and earn a pension but once you are done with all that, and you are looking for happiness, then the US has a lot of strong competition.
    I experienced a moderate amount of international travel in my adult life. I've been to England, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and the Caribbean. I think the barrier to considering moving overseas is considerably lower if you have had some international travel experience. I also followed a friend who moved to Thailand a couple of years before me. I didn't (and don't) dislike America and I am not unappreciative of the advantages living in America has brought to me. I was bored and Thailand was an antidote to boredom with the US. It is still wonderful living here in Thailand 7 years later. Now that I have been away for years, looking back at what America has become these past few years, I can't say I find the US all that appealing as a place to live. You get some new perspective once you get out of the US bubble.
    I have a 6-figure+ pension so I can easily afford to live in the US but all those $$ go farther here and I can build a better life. Thailand is different. There is much to adjust and adapt to. Expat life is not for everyone but you are not sacrificing anything by moving to Thailand.
    There are still a lot of good reasons to stay in the US. Most people, even if they are interested in following expat living media, still stay put. Fear of the unknown is, of course, one of the reasons which could be a personality thing. Language barriers are also apart of the fear factor. Staying close to family and friends. Jobs, if you are not retired. You can easily afford to stay in the US so vacation travel is an alternative to moving overseas. There are many healthcare concerns that keep people where they are. Healthcare is great in Thailand but it is recommended you be in decent health when you initially come here. US citizen retirees need to factor in that Medicare cannot be used here.
    The dating scene, if you are an older man, is without a doubt better here. You still have to navigate individual compatibility but the pool of women is much larger. It is inexplicable to westerners but SE Asian women just don't put age and appearance as high on the desirability list as do western women. It's a factor but not as much of one here. I had a wife in the US and now I have a Thai wife (divorce in between of course).

    Health and concerns about navigating a foreign country's health care system is the big one I assume. But for me, it's sports. I'd love to live in paradise, but I also don't want to miss going to baseball, football or hockey games. The games have always been such a sweet distraction for me, from childhood right up tp current in my latter working life. Love how inviting Pattaya's neon bar scene looks, love the idea of not dealing with winter and an excess of snow shoveling, but I need to be there when the alma mater kicks off in the Fall. Come summer, I need to be at the ballpark on a Saturday aft.

As a result, I'm comfortable in just about any culture. I love SEA. Was in Thailand last Sept/Oct '23). Hope to make the "move" in '25.

    There are genuine reasons. Commitments, family, upbringing. More importantly, a desire to stay in the west and raise a family. I don't think we should be quick to knock that.
    Sometimes, it's lack of knowledge of options (me, until 5 years ago), lack of finances/employment options (also me right now).

      your input is not worthless, a little jaded but not without merit. I have been traveling to thailand since 2002. I have gone back and forth with moving there or not many times. At first, my kids were young and I was the primary single parent. It was easy for me to get my mother to help my ex and take care of them on my trips but I couldn't be gone more than a month.
      The second 15 trips I was working for a company and I'd travel to thailand twice, sometimes 3 times a year as a single guy. That whole time I'd meet real thai ladies, not bar girls. Met my wife and things changed. Over the last 5 years we built a sanctuary at our home in southern california. We love it there. I have a special situation, I inherited the house and my moms tax rate. Its so low, its embarrassing. First time in my life I'm not struggling started 10 years ago, but I didn't have a sanctuary till 3 years ago. It changes things.
      If I had to shovel snow at any time of the year, I might not think that way. There are many reasons not to make the jump to thailand, most are fear based, but there are also great reasons.
      I just spent 34 days in thailand and after a week, all I could think about was riding my bike....lol plus, I saw it was 75 f everyday in southern california whil I was in 100+ f temps every day. Just saw Mr big and was 10 feet from the stage, thats another thing I'd miss..... Orange County california can hurt you if you are struggling financially, but if you aren't which is what Greeny stated, its better as a home base than thailand.

    • @martypoll
      @martypoll Pƙed 20 dny +3

      I would consider myself upper middle class in the US. I have a 6-figure pension income. I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area so my income may or may not be “upper” there. I’ve lived in Thailand 7 1/2 years, 6 in Bangkok and 1 1/2 years in the countryside. 100,000 baht/month is $2,730/month and that, I think is a good starting point. So say $3,000-$4,000/month in Bangkok and at the lower end of that scale in just about any other location in Thailand. Best to add $100,000 or more savings to that as well.

    I know a few people who would rather live poor in America versus having a good life in a different country. I have thought about this question for a while and I do not believe that you will get an honest answer. I may be wrong, but I think that it is primarily pure laziness. To move requires getting rid of so much stuff and then preparing for the unknown. Many individuals cannot get rid of stuff and they have failed often in planning. They cannot admit those character flaws to themselves. It was hard for me as well, but America made it easier. China paid me 50 percent more than America and they actually respected my degrees in engineering and mathematics. If you are over 45 then you know that America does not want you or your experience. If that reality is not true for you then fantastic for you. I was offered an IT job in Hawaii about a year ago, and I calculated that I would actually lose money by moving there, and that was a 6 figure job. My brother in law thought that I was crazy in not taking it. He naively believes that America is the best place to live. Maybe because my sister is a vp at a major company in the usa, but that is not the reality for most people living in the usa. Thanks for the video and that is my worthless 2 cents in the discussion.

the best place to retire is Sarawak! The Sarawakians (or is it the Sarawakanese?) are the most beautiful, friendly people on Earth - of Chinese ancestry - but with a British flavour (remember James Brooke - Rajah of Sarawak?) I visited there recently, and discovered a beautiful restaurant in the Sarawak Mall. It specialised in chicken! They had roast chicken, butter chicken, baked chicken, braised chicken, broiled, sautĂ©ed and fried chicken! For a small fee you could graze away to your heart’s content! Also, nearby was a brewery which created beers from the 17th century - set up by a local who had studied under one of Germany’s greatest Beer Meisters! I was in heaven! I arrived at around 1pm - at around 3 pm, as I was starting the second round of grazing - the friendly staff asked whether I’d like to pay another fee - I willingly complied. At around 7pm I wanted to leave, but for some reason my legs weren’t in perfect operating condition - something to do with the undercarriage I presumed. Also, the beer had created some sort of optic disparity which impacted upon my focusing ability. A lesser man than me may have been embarrassed, but I felt I could handle the situation! I called the manager over, and offered to pay one of the waiters US$10 if he would be so kind as to provide me with some strength - so I could manage a power-assisted waddle back to my hotel some 300 metres away! This he readily agreed too. I thought I did very well - I only fell over twice, and the waiter, with the assistance of helpful passersby - managed to guide me to my hotel - where I arrived in good shape. Upon arrival their duty of care was taken over by the concierge; and with the assistance of two bellboys and a concerned guest - I made it back to my suite. Wonderful, friendly people - can’t speak too highly of them!

 we travelled to Vietnam in 1988 and moved to Vietnam permanently not long after. I have not been to America for more than five years not for any dislike but rather I am simply not inclined to bear the expense, the time not to mention the physical hardship of travel. After all
 we are now 70! But as for why others would not want to come to this part of the world I think it has a lot to do with personal tastes and interests. My brother is much more wealthy than I but has never come to Asia. He lives in an awesome log home in the beautiful Catskills Mountains of New York. He will never come not even for a visit. Long term visas are extremely easy if you have money. The Elite visa is for anyone of any age. The 10 year LTR is available to both retirees and investors. There are other investment visas through the Thailand Board of Investments. A favorable exchange rate can be attractive to people of any income level and people with money have few “issues”. I experienced the same thing as a female in Turkey - the men are charming and good-looking but they are looking for a handout and/or a visa. Both males and females of impoverished countries take advantage for their own personal gain. I think it is a very sad way to live. I am only here because I was looking for information on travelling to Thailand and fell down the rabbit hole. 😀

    I’m in Phuket now, for a month. Been coming for 15 years. Thailand is great. But America is better. California has perfect weather and everything works.. yes you can get cheap food and sex in Thailand. But if you have your act together, are financially and socially successful. Much higher standard of living in the US. Pretty hard to beat the upscale parts of the US. One CZcamsr called expats in Thailand LBH. Losers back home. I tend to agree.

    If you are single, you aren't an outside person and the ease of living in southern california isn't important. You know, almost no rain, moderate year round tems, (mid spring year round) then its a no brainer to move to thailand. This is what happens to people I know who have moved away from southern california.
    They want a big house for cheaper than their condo, or small house, or they don't want to pay rent anymore and they want to own, so they move to the "inland empire" which is very desert like and 50 miles inland from the beach. All the work is where they moved from so now they have an hour to drive minimum to and from their jobs. (my buddy has to leave at 3:30 am) After a few years of this to hell, 15 years, theynow hate southern california. My friends I used to cycle along the coast a few days a week, or hang out at the beach with, now hate california. So they move to texas, or Idaho. lol No shit. They hate it, then move back, or move to Florida and tell me how much they hate it as well.
    People need to look at the big picture, you like what you like because of your needs. Nothing wrong with that. Its 3:30pm right now, I'm gonna jump on my bike and ride to the beach. Its 70f here. At the beach its 67f, I'll bring arm warmers......lol

    You were correct to put "man" in your video title. Women loathe to be far from their children and grandchildren, many men don't care about that. The biggest barrier is language. It will take 2-3 years of lessons and immersion to be able to fill out forms and speak competently. Even Thais talk about how difficult their writing system is, and pronunciation is difficult, if you want to work on your accent. Medical is good, but we don't always have the money to pay up front for medical care, and wait for insurance to reimburse. I visited a doctor in Thailand before and I went to a great facility, but had it been an emergency, it would have been a nightmare. For people with a weak stomach, Thailand is not very clean. Thai people are clean, but the public spaces are not, and where do you think they wash their hands and dishes when selling street food? They also touch food and money, which trips people out in the US. The bottom line is, some men move there with unrealistic expectations of what life will be like. At least that dude is thinking ahead.

    Some people just prefer to live where they feel like they belong. If I wanted to live in Thailand, I would have to register with the govt every year, and be forbidden from owning land or a business which I control. Here in California, I can make $10k - $15k every month doing backyard construction projects, but in Thailand I would be jailed for doing the same thing. In California, my kids get an international baccalaureate education at a free public school. I would have to pay $15k/year for the same quality of education in Thailand. Farang will never be treated like they belong in Thailand. I just visit every year for 1-2 months so my wife of 22 years can see her family, and my kids absolutely love going. I know the question is directed at single men but just my 2 cents.
