Maybe on certain angles but overall a harsh assessment imo.

Mahe Drysdale and Hamish Bond - just living legends! Everybody admirers them and their performance!
But still 1:16 " ... the top of the podium in Tokyo would be great ..." - I personaly think, that it's not realistic. I think Mahe was kidding as he said it, it was meant more ironical.
My personal opinion is, that the whole NZL eights crew knows, that it will be great to be near to the podium or just even on the podium in Tokyo. I mean, there are some great rowing nations, just to mention a few i.e. GB, Canada, US, Germany, Australia, Netherlands who still running a long time established system around their eights with a lot of good athlets, coaches and boat speed. So that would be very unrealistic to go for the top of the podium with that NZL eights for Tokyo. I can't believe, that Mahe Drydale or Hamish Bond are real convinced about that goal, looks to me a way to arrogant. If they are - all the best 💪 and good luck! 🍀👍 Enjoy your journey, even if the outcome isn't congruent with your goal 😉
And I wonder why worldrowing push and post this content in their channel

Mate....they said that top of the podium would be great not that they would do it. That's not arrogant that's just having the same goal that everyone else at the regatta has. That's called being a competitor 😂
Also they're not the guys to doubt nor is the rest of the 8+

I would never doubt New Zealand rowers when they put their mind to a goal. I’ve always had great respect. Would love if the US was in the running but I am doubtful.
Fun fact the Yale varsity eight recent national champions contains zero Americans including the coxswain . They beat the Harvard 8 over 4 miles by about five seconds. Harvard has three Americans out of the nine occupants. Stunning.

John Mason not particularly surprising, it’s a known fact that the male varsity teams as a whole are more consistent and arguably better than the Olympic team
