Tamiya TA02s Lancia 037 Speed Test - Sport Tuned Motor, Stock Gearing

- In this video I take my newly built Tamiya Lancia 037 rally car for a little speed test and a bit of fun running it on a loose surface. This iconic rally body is fitted to Tamiya's awesome TA-02S chassis (S denotes the short wheelbase) and it is totally stock except:
Ball bearing conversion
Yeah Racing alloy propshaft
Modified CVA shock absorbers to increase travel.
The car is running on a 3000mAh shorty LiPo pack.

Hi Mark, awesome rally rc. I think 19mph is plenty for ravel roads with jumps. Liked how it drifted in the end, looks like it handles as a rally car should! Take care👍🏾
Hi Paul, yep, I'm really pleased with this new Tamiya rally car. Definitely, enough speed for off road that's for sure! It does handle very nicely but being a short wheelbase it can be a bit twitchy! All the best to you and your family!
OUCH!!!!! Did I tell you how much I like the TA-02 chassis??? Bummer about the roll over but you did get a some great speed out of it.. Try these if you can find them "Tamiya 47393 Speed gear 66T/69T for TA01 / TA02" Tamico has them in stock and a bunch of other parts... Awesome run Mark, other than the mishap, still fun to watch you whip that car around!!! Rob did a great job keeping the car in frame.. ATB my friend!!!!

19mph Mark that's good but most of all how awesome did that thing look! The looks alone add an extra 100 mph what a classic car!

Oh man, it is never a good feeling to see one go over and random bit of it go flying off! Glad it was not too bad and I am sure there will be some more battle scars on there fairly soon. It has been a while since you guys have been out at the park hitting trees, I mean racing! LOL!

19mph is pretty good! Man Mark when you side flipped it I was cringing feeling the pain along with ya and it was not even mine and it felt like it was because I know how those spills feel when your driving a beauty!!

19mph is very a very respectable speed, especially considering it sports a heavier plastic shell. Shame about the grip roll dude, hope it wasn't too bad. Lovery car...😍👍🏻.
Hiya mate! Yep, I think this is just fast enough for a rally car! The gearing is very low so should be good for pulling that heavier body! Oh well, it had to happen at some point, now it's got a few battle scars! All the best my friend! 😎👌👍

I think tarmac and hard body shells that took ages to finish are not compatible! It is such a nice looking car that I'm sure it's just dirt and grass from now on. Yeah, get some nobbly tyres on it and get it out in the dirt where it belongs, Mark! It was good to get it speed tested, but definitely set up for some gravel action, it looks really cool with that tall stance... I need to go back and rewatch your videos when I get to converting my TT-02 to something less speedrunny and more rally'y, let's see when I get to that...

Hi Mads, haha 😄 your guess wasn't too bad, this chassis is geared ridiculously low! I reckon it would do 24 or 25 easily with higher gearing ⚙ but that would need a high speed gear set...

It's quite lively, even at only 19mph! It's not really built for speed, it's there to look good, and that it does!!

The Lancia 037 is a beautiful kit, but I just can't see past the more cartoonist looks of the original. To me the original will always be one of my Top 3 Tamiya cars, I just love it.
It sure is a great kit! But yep, i know what you mean, the original is an icon! Just placing this body on one of my buggies makes it look even more cool!!! 😎👍

We are currently looking for a suitable location to put my 959 up against my mates XV01 lancia, it's proving to be difficult.
I did have a chuckle at your little bit of creativity with your knobs on transmitter..... those Carson reflex control sticks are rediculously weak, great fix Sir! 🤣
Mine broke off the first time I used it, and i also broke the steering one off of Taylors during the speed run challenge.
A sign of the times I guess..... probably made in China!
They are a far cry from the quality of the eighties Futaba Attack, and Acoms techniplus units..... I still use some of those, still going strong after nearly 40 years!

Good guess on the speed, mate, it is geared really low so not too bad really. You're correct, it is a dream to drive on the loose stuff, even with the road tyres on it.

Oh yeah, my 40 year old Acoms has alloy sticks and is still going strong, and they say the future is better? No way!

Saying that though, it does give it a certain look of realism..... and we all remember how those group B cars looked after a few stages, dents, cracks and bits hanging off all over the place! 🤣 😂
Yeah I noticed the transmitter, and yep, they all break there..... awful bit of design.
In fact I also thread a couple of screws in to mine.... but then the plastic around the moving base broke to eventually!
The range is also not great compared to the old 27mhz radios (as you probably saw by our run away TT02 in the last speed run video) I also hate all that binding malarkey, and having to have a specific receiver to match.
I love my 3 techniplus radios, complete with metal nobs, longer range, and of course a lovely wibbly wobbly!! 🤣
Also, you can pick up multiple old school receivers of any make and run as many cars as you want off one transmitter.
Only downside is the 8 batterys they require, and the fact there's no EPA, SDR adjustment on them.
Maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old man that's set in his ways! 🤣

I still have 4 Acoms systems and they all work fine and agree about the simplicity of the crystal system, nowt wrong with that...

Time to time I use it, but very carefully and is quite slow (I add a lot of weight to make it looks realistic) droping the aceleration and speed.

For performance I use the Lancia Delta TT-02. The 037 is the princess

I don't think so, this car is geared so low it tops out in a few metres! I think you can get a high speed gear set that would make it faster!

I've been after one for ages..
It's a fully completed but never ran shelf queen, I paid £120 for it.!! 👍 👍 👍
My only problem with it is the colour, it's metallic blue.!!

It really needs to be done in the Martini livery.!
I'm planning on repainting it & get getting the correct decals.
I don't know how old it is, I hope the plastics haven't gone brittle.

Sounds like you got a great deal, good luck with the re-painting.
My original 1997 chassis is still going strong and no problem with the plastics.
A very mild brushless setup would be fine but don't go too mad with it!
The only weak spots I've found are the motor plate (it's a plastic bracket) breaks easily, I have an alloy replacement in mine and beware the stock alloy pinion wears out in no time. If you are gonna run it I'd relace the bushings with bearings if they are not already.
I think the only way to make it 257mm is to fit the longer bathtub.

Would you recommend sanding it back to repaint it or removing the paint with chemicals.?
I've seen people removing paint like that but it looks like a right old faff...

Thanks mate! I would definitely just sand it down until it's nice and smooth, don't worry about removing all the paint. Then cover it with Tamiya white Fine Surface Primer and sand that with very fine wet and dry. Add top coat and voila! 😎👊👍

The first thing I wanted to know was it's age, I've heard horror stories about old RCs.. It's got 2017 stamped on it so I'm super happy with that.!!
True to the listing it hasn't got a single mark on it & has obviously never been ran, the servo wasn't centred & the motor was reversed.
The body generally looks alright, it's got the odd imperfection & run in the paint but you've got to look closely.
I was also delighted to find that it's got nice rubber shielded bearings throughout & a decent Absima Thrust B-spec modified 12t motor.
So after an hour or so going over it to check for grease, making sure everything is where it should be & all tight, then gluing the tyres, I put a 2S lipo in & gave it its maiden drive.!
I wasn't entirely sure what I was expecting... I certainly wasn't expecting it to be this good.!
In fact "good" doesn't cover it Mark...
REALLY BLOODY IMPRESSIVE is more like it.!!!
It's soooooo smooth, the suspension is an absolute delight.!!
It's high ride height with soft springs makes it squat, lean, dive & glide over bumps just like the rally car it's supposed to be.!!
It's got grip when you want it & oversteer or understeer when you want that.!!
It's extremely nimble, it's super planted & it showed absolutely no sign of rolling over even on warm dry tarmac.!!
And even with just a 2S brushed system (it's got a cheap Chinese knock off Hobbywing 1060 in it... For now) 😉 it's got some poke about it.!!!
I'd say it's topping out around 22/23 mph ish..
I've got a mild brushless system to fit in it, but I also have a 2S brushed ESC & motor out of an Arrma Infraction mega, it's a big 570, 9t motor... I'm going to fit that first just to see what it's like..
If it can propel the Infraction mega up to 30 mph then it should be decent in something much lighter.!!
I'm absolutely made up that I finally got an 037 & I'm especially over the moon that I only paid £120 for it.!

Lancia 037.the Lancia road cars were so bad for rot the company stopped making them for the public after numerous warrenty replacements ..and built the cars for motorsport only
