Perhaps they do the exaggerated movements so you can tell what they're doing from afar, enemies familiar would be like "Oh shit they're about to start shooting us" and freak out. Kind of like if you saw a bunch of archers on a hill all draw back their bow and aim at 45 degree angles, you know what's coming next.
That's the proper stance for O-zutsu or high caliber matchlock musket. Due to larger charge and flash leakage through priming hole, it is unsafe to shoot the musket at eye level. So, proper way to shoot O-zutsu is with the gun at chest level or above the eyes.

There are literally depictions of samurai from the edo period showing them using guns.
The captain (typically a samurai) of an arquebus contingent tended to also be armed with arquebus. Oda Nobunaga's arquebus captain, Hashimoto Ippa, was recorded to have fought with a gun in the Battle of Ukino, 1558.
When it first arrived, but during Oda's reign. The Japanese clans all have dedicated gun smiths with the only problem being acquiring gun powder that needed to be traded or bought from the temples.
