1851 Colt Navy in 44 Caliber--The Deluxe Engraved Edition! But is it Accurate???

  • Technically, a "Navy" is 36 caliber. This is actually a 44 caliber (Army) colt on an 1851 Navy Frame! Closest relative in history...Dance Brothers CSA 44 caliber revolver!
    In this week's video, I shoot my newly acquired 1851 Navy in 44 Caliber, with the Deluxe Engraving on a Brass Frame (by Pietta). Its a beautiful Cap & Balll Revolver and I put it through its paces on the ‪@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb‬ range!
    Whenever an 1851 Navy in 44 caliber is mentioned, we have to deal with whether it was real or a fantasy revolver! I do that here! But...in the end...WHO CARES? It's a blast!

    I only have one comment, Get Some Mr. Stone! We love you and thank you for sharing joy in a world that is in dire need of it. I don't know the future, but the man that played Moses from the good book said, From my Cold Dead Hands, Amen, when the boys in The Alamo were surrounded by Santa Ana's troops and they demanded surrender, Travis shot a cannon at them. After Pearl harbor a small island called Wake had a handful of U.S. Marines defending it and it cost the Japanese 820 killed, 333 wounded, and Rocky Balboa whooped Ivan Drago.

    Bought the same one for my father in law last year for Father’s Day. Only gripe I have is the plastic grips. Pietta makes the same gun with wooden grips with I “thought” I purchased. He loves it though.

    I had a similar gun some years ago. Mine was made by ASM and that gun shot better than you would expect. It didn't bother me about the presumed lack of historical precedence as it was fun to shoot. I have a photo of me somewhere displaying that gun at the Gettysburg Battlefield. None of the deceased soldiers ghosts rose up and objected.

    I'd shoot it all day long and twice on Sundays. I think you meant to say that if it had a round barrel it would be a Griswald and Gunnison pistol. The Dance Brothers didn't have the recoil shield. And I think the Dance Brothers had steel frames. Regardless of any of that I'd love to have that gun. It's a fine shooter.

    as far as "period correct"goes try this one of my guns which is a .44 cal. 3" octagon barrel with no rammer hole, army cylinder and army grips. It should give a purist a heart attack but a 20 yard joy to shoot. The cylinder loads off gun using a press The trouble tp load is more than made up by the fun shooting..

    I have several brass frame as well as steel frame percussion revolvers and can't really see any difference in the performance. If I was that concerned about the historical aspect, I would save up a few dollars and buy an original. There are still plenty of originals available if you want to spend the money. The ones I really laugh at are the guys that want to tell you how inferior or unsafe brass frames are. I was at the Alamo just yesterday and they have original canons that shoot 4 inch balls. The internet gurus want to tell you that those are not brass but are bronze. Bronze usually turns reddish brown with a very green patina as it ages. These still look like brass and the historical documents call them brass, so I am not going to argue about alloys. The bottom line is buy the gun you are happy with and enjoy it. Thanks for another good video.

    • @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb  Před měsícem +1

      Thank you! So I start with feet parallel and step towards the target with my right foot and the back to parallel. Sometimes editing removes the step forward so you only see the step back. It’s just a rhythm thing I got into…not sure you’d wanna teach technical shooting off me but it works. It’s based on the pistol shooting technique trained by union army in 1860s sort of. … start with revolver pointed up at chest level Thanks. I’m a rhythm guy.

    Good shootin’, J! The groups on your new pistol look pretty tight! High left very consistently, very tight group. I really enjoy your content and congratulations on your new pistol! I have a question for you, off topic. Have you ever worn a brass frame pistol completely out? Or to the point that the accuracy or safety was degraded or compromised? I am just curious, as I’m a newcomer to the cap and ball pistol scene. If you recall, I have the plain Jane 1851 Navy in .44 with brass frame, and when I got it I couldn’t find any black powder or Pyrex, so I bought triple 7 powder. From what I’ve gleaned from watching several CZcams channels, it’s safe to shoot, but in brass frame revolvers, the charge should be reduced by 25% off the black powder load. So that’s what I have done and it seems to work well. So with the black powder charge calling for 25 grains of bp, I use about 18 grains of the triple 7 powder. The recoil is nominal and the accuracy is good. All this being said, I want to shoot this pistol for many years to come and prevent overloading and wearing the pistol out. So what are your thoughts? Have you ever worn out a pistol? Do you think I have adjusted my powder loads adequately to prevent excessive wear on the brass frame? Thanks J for another great video!

    • @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb  Před měsícem +1

      I have never worn out a brass! But…I think you’re on the right track loading lighter. That’s what I do…on this one 22 grains is pushing it! If I’d been shooting pyrodex or Swiss it would have been 18 grains cause those 2 pack more wallop. Keep doing what you’re doing and you should get lots or rounds and years out of yours. Light loads work and tend to be more accurate in my opinion.

    If you want a .44 get an 1860 Army!
    The whole point of black powder shooting is its historical links to the past!
