This was so much fun to watch! Y'all are adorable, and now I have *far too many* ideas for one aspiring babby medievalist to handle.
I'm sorry for the overwhelm, but so glad for the inspo!
Ditto this!
@@OpusElenae it's good overwhelm! by the time we can actually do events here I will have So Many Cool Things to wear 💚
Oh no, now I have the idea to do Tamora Pierce cosplay. I've never thought of it before but now my soul can't rest until historical Daine is a thing!
The sass that Jimmy brings. I'm here for it :)
I have fewer UFOs now. At one point I had all these embroidery projects and at one point I realized I disliked them all, either because of the subject or colours or techniques but I felt I couldn't do anything else unless I finished them. Character development and stuff like that.....
Then one day I just gave myself permission not to finish them. I was allowed to fail and give up without being a horrible person. I had learned all I needed from these projects. They went to the charity shop. And a huge load was lifted of my shoulders.
Creativity was one of the reasons I gave up a lot of historical costuming and did theatre costumes. I didn't like doing copies.
How freeing!
@@OpusElenae it took a lot of years. It is NOT a character flaw to say enough and to let go. But it took a lot of repeats and it still sneaks up if I don't watch it.
Getting to watch this more than a week later while finishing a UFO. So much fun, and so much to think about. Thank you everyone (including Jimmy's lovely mum).
The point about not being able to import the lichen is a really good one; I recently found out that dyer's woad is illegal to import or grow into my state because it's on the noxious weed list so I'm on the hunt for a legal blue that actually grows in the pacific northwest.
We gotta do our dyeing responsibly!
Really lovely video, also - Jimmy's -mom?! What a treat.
Thank you all for this 😊🤗
This has honestly gotten me so excited to get involved with our local SCA group. I've found all my patterns for a Nasrid Dynasty kit and I'm getting super stoked about it! I also think it'd be super hot weather friendly given how dang warm Gibraltar gets! It's also very not wool or linen dependent, and since I'm allergic to both and know I will be way too hot in polyester I was so stoked to find somewhere that depended on cotton and silk instead!
I'm so glad you were able to work something out that suits your allergies and your levels of accuracy!
Very enjoyable! Now I have even more people to check out. Even some fellow Scadian Outlanders! Thank you for hosting this.
Lol @ Jimmy's Robin Hood rage, because when that movie came out a friend went to see it and literally texted me photos of the theater screen, knowing full well a rant would be in-coming. XD
They’re all… so bad. So Bad.
This pannel was so facinating! Although I feel a little better about my lack of historical accuracy in my own sewing, I still feel I should be working harder to find and use more natural materials for my garments. But when you're on a budget and your only real accessable material is from JoAnn's, you're gonna end up with mostly polyblend material, recreating more the sillouette of the period if not the construction. I cannot find 100% wool in a store where I can touch the fabric to make sure it's not too scratchy or too heavy or too expensive. And most linen is blended with other fabric materials, or it's completely heavy and white and not appropriate for the garnent. So I go for purely the asthetic, make sure it looks correct even if it's completely the wrong kind of material for the time period. Same thing for thread - I only have poly thread, so that's what I use.
The only person you have to answer to for your choices is YOU. Everyone makes choices based on what we have available, what we can afford, what we can physically wear, and what was historical. The balance between those options is going to be different for everyone, and that okay. If the choice is "you show up in whatever clothing you can afford and source" and "you don't show up because you felt like you should be making different choices and you're worried about the judging" then I would always rather you show up.
@@OpusElenae Honestly, that makes me feel so much better. I'm seriously proud of what I've been able to make and I want to make more. Maybe someday I'll have a truly "authentic" outfit, but I will be happy with "being dressed" and "having fun". Keep being awesome, all you sewers!
This was simply a lovely panel! And now I don't feel bad for attending multiple medieval events with the same unfinished hem in my skirt :D I think I had just tacked down the folds a bit and worked on the hem over the course of *years*. And one of those events I actually left the sewing needle tucked in the hem. Only pricked myself a couple of times taking especially long strides xD But I remember sitting down on a nice hill in the sunshine and just picking up the needle in my hem and sewing for a bit while I could hear the event going on and it's a lovely memory :)
Was gonna attend a medieval festival mid September and had a bunch of items that I spontaneously absolutely needed to make and of course not nearly enough time to finish any of them. But the event got cancelled last week. Plenty of time to work on my handsewing now :P
This is a 'judgement over unfinished hems'-free zone, you're among kin here! 🤣
Thank you for this marvelous panel of medieval loving persons. I love yours and Jimmy's video already. So it was great to discover other wonderful costumers. The medieval project wheels have begun turning!!
At about 24 min you were talking about clothes that are rarely used-for example the horsehair/wool cloak Jimmy discussed. I made a (from recycling used wool army blankets) a cloak...he never wears it, but at a fantasy LARP, it was quite popular overnight by a variety of folks who failed to think about desert cold. And the whole dying escapade about an hour in- I found some sale rack pale blue/green linen...when I dyed it with a brown modern dye, it really turned out nicely in the symphony of browns-and back in the day, people didn't really always start with BRAND NEW fabric. The vast majority of folks wound up remaking from existing items...that allows for variation of timing of times. Only the upper class had brand new-the rest of our collective ancestors worked over and over and over the fabric they had. That is historic accuracy in my opinion. I hand sew for my kids-tho I am working on some outfits for a fantasy based wedding coming up in my family.
I always ALWAYS would rather have something and not need it (especially when it comes to warmth) than need it and not have it.
This is why I gave up on handbags for decades! Even in normal non-historical-recreation life, I'd much rather have the bases covered by carrying some extra gear than find I DID have my X (gloves, drinkbottle, throat lozenges, whatever) but left it at home because I downsized what I was carrying... 🤦🏻♀️ Especially a thing if you don't have a vehicle to stash things in - sometimes I can really relate to those medieval pilgrim peasants trudging on foot! 😆
Thanks to Jimmy for mentioning this and Courtney for organizing/keeping the video up. So many new (to me) sources of inspiration. Must also add my encouragement to those of others for the accurate King Arthur and Robin Hood outfits - they were my gateway into medieval period through Stewart and Zimmer-Bradley novels followed by years of rabbit holes looking for earlier and earlier versions.
👀👀👀👀👀 historical Keladry
Yeah, glad I could watch this later. Was tucked up nicely in bed at 3am this morning. I still scrounge around looking for THE fabric/s for Ylva lol... we've had long chats about that particular outfit.
Haha I'm still determined!
@@YlvaTheRed My stuff is still all sitting here, ready for when you get your stuff
@@daisanders82 we shall make them glorious!
I missed the live, but hugely enjoyed the "save for later". Just a fan of all Y'all
Yeah I don’t want to de-list my panels because they don’t fit my channel aesthetic or whatever. They’re valuable information.
Fabulous panel!
Thank you for this panel. It's always nice to find more medieval enthusiasts 🙂
There are so many of us!
Don't feel bad, I still have never hemmed the sideless surcoat I got my thistle in....in 1990... I'm ADHD, also. In addition to hyperfocus and time deflation, there's also the inability to look at a pile of stuff and have any clue where to start. We also will have an idea and drag the things for that out, then something else, and..and...pretty soon we are drowning in 'creative clutter' as my late mum charitably called it, and that lack of knowing where to start kicks in and completely derails things, sometimes for months, even years.
And Courtney, my absolute favourite Arthur story is also the Mary Stewart books.
Oh heck yeah, one of the reasons I try to keep my number of projects down is to avoid that amount of overwhelm.
I noticed that once everyone relaxed they all had lots to share. So great.
Fully authentic Byron's cameo was the best thing ever! Thank you all so much for doing this panel, I appreciate all of you and found what you all said to be really informative and interesting. I love all of your enthusiasm and encouragement. Thank you!!
But I love sewing button holes by hand! Lovely to hear you all talking!
I do sometimes! I'm working on a by-hand buttonhole situation on a london hood right now. But they're often a time-sink that I don't mind taking a shortcut on.
@ylvathered I grew up in the Northern Rivers, New South Wales, and while we lived in Lismore my mum found some local lichen which actually made purple dye consistent with what was available in Ireland and Northumbria around the 12th century. I think we used aged urine to develop the dye? It came out a soft lilac on silk and wool.
She was part of the SCA fibre guild so she has reams and reams of research (university librarian access powers) and is always happy to share her sources. We've been going through all our dyeing research and trying to identify the plants since we did this circa 2006 😅
That’s fantastic!
I'd love to hear more about this!!
Here In Southern Australia we have two main medieval events The first is the Gummeracha medieval faire and the relatively new Barossa valley medieval faire. More serious events, more medieval , less fairy. Worth googling both. WE also Have a "Timeline" event at Kryal Castle here in Victoria.I sympathise with Ylva. I'm looking for costume ideas for yeoman forest warden, late middle ages. I have been following Taffy's site for a while now and was through his, that i am now here.
And now you have the viking festival too in SA! I can't wait to be able to get across the border again, Gumeracha was a blast last time I went!
This has been _incredibly_ helpful and super interesting.

This is so awesome, many of my favourite youtubers in one panel!
(A good many of mine too, let’s be honest)
@@OpusElenae so cool to see you all taking about reenactment & medieval clothing. I joined NVG in 2019, haven’t looked back!
@@chrispe82 *waves* hey there friend!
@@YlvaTheRed 😍
Mary Stewart is my hero! Best Arthur and Merlin ever done!
She is my favorite too. And that says something considering I try to consume every Arthurian legend I can.
@@OpusElenae , She's the only one who ever got most of the mythical pieces to fit!
this just so great. thank you.
Omg..Jimmys Mom! She's delightful!
drat I missed this! Medieval Times is awful and I didn't enjoy it. Jimmy's Mum is a delight. I feel everyone on the underthings. I'm doing all new linen ones. Some of mine are 30 years old so I guess its time... Accessibility is a privilege some of our academic fellows enjoy that those of us not in Academia don't have. Its easier than it used to be but its still difficult for non-academics to gain access to collections. I hand sew everything but that's simply because I am too lazy to make space to set up the machine. I also now use linen threads and bronze and/or iron needles. But I'm also the person who showed up to my first SCA event in full anglo saxon... HUGS TO THE PRODUCTION ASSISTANT. I made a tunic at an event once... I have 1 ufo. I think that makes me a bad person. Sense of time??? While researching??? NEVER :P I like to get close as possible because I do late antiquity/early Byzantine and there just isn't much, so you do the adjacent thing.
I am working on a 14th Century Briar Rose, so far have completed the Shift and Kirtle, just have to finish the apron and hood. I am hoping to make videos about the process, but I have to figure out the video editing first.
I highly recommend a Skillshare trial; they have so many good courses on programs (I’m not sponsored, I just like the service)

*waves* Hi there!!
Is there somewhere online one could read Althea's dissertations? I neeeeed these in my life!
If she makes them available le to the general public I’ll put a link to them in the community tab.
I really want to see Jimmy do king Arthur or Robin Hood now.
I have threatened to fly to the UK every time he wistfully talks about making an adaptation of the Mabinogion, just to be in it.
@@OpusElenae maid Marian is on my historical bucket list. I've done the screen accurate one from 'maid Marian and her merry men' now I want to do a HA version.
Whoa, Jimmy's mum is my doppelganger. Weird.
Obviously you need a Norwegian forest cat and a cuppa tea.
@@OpusElenae I have a Norwegian Forest Cat, but prefer coffee. Maybe we aren't long lost twins.
@@rickshaw1971 fraternal twins, obviously!
Courtney, where do you live in Texas? My own experience in Texas had been that ALL the local events were camping outdoors, which drove me away from the SCA.
I’m near the austin area but I go to events all up and down 35 to the gulf coast. There are a lot of events that have camping, but there’s a lot of people who will just hotel it too.
Jimmy's mom!!!!!!!!!!
Isn’t she darling?
@@OpusElenae amazing. I mean he OBVIOUSLY has a magical mother.
All of the best humans. All we are missing is The Turnip of Terror.
If I had known him better then (I think we were acquainted but not well) I would have invited him!
@@OpusElenae I just got involved in the SCA, Middle Kingdom, and sewing my soft kit. So I've been watching your channel, Ylva the Red, the Welsh Viking, Turnip of Terror, etc. Thank you for your great videos.
Where did you get the turning timer?
Oh Amazon!
