  • A group of women artisans are being trained by Tahir Ahmad to make fur products from sheep leather in Srinagar. This initiative took place to revive fur products made from sheep leather. These artisans make warm coats, jackets, caps, mats, bags, cushions, wall-hanging items, gloves, mufflers and many more products. Tahir also has a plan to train young girls to make them independent and earn their livelihood from their homes. Earlier, these products were in good demand and people in large numbers were earning their livelihood from these products. However, artisans faced a very tough time after the government imposed a ban on the manufacturing of these products in 2006. But, after lifting the ban, the first female group of artisans was trained to make these products. The Department of Handlooms and Handicraft also supported him and these artisans under a government-sponsored scheme namely ‘Kaar Khandar’.
