  • This is my review and thoughts of the 2019 Cub Cadet Wheeled String Trimmer model ST 100. This is my second time using this trimmer, and I used it as a brush hog...which it is NOT designed for! I abused this trimmer severely today, and the harder I pushed it...the better it cut! I am so impressed with this little machine that I honestly can't put into words just how much I love it! I am not affiliated with Cub Cadet in any way, I don't benefit in any way for posting this review.....I decided that I would video a short clip to share my thoughts on this unit. I love this trimmer! I cannot vouch for it's long term durability yet, but I'll post a 12 month review about its durability next year. I hope this helps you in your decision in purchasing one....I'm certainly glad I finally got myself this one!

    The big weed is a Poke. Pretty in the fall but if not cut down before the berries start dropping you will have a million of them. Thanks for the review, I am thinking of getting one of these.

      Thank you Rick! I absolutely love it, I wish I would have bought it a few years ago when I first saw it. I couldn't find any video reviews of it back then, so I didn't get it. I was under the impression that it was just another weed eater string trimmer....man was I wrong, this thing is powerful vegetation destroyer! If this one ever dies on me, I'll definitely buy another one...without question!

      Thank you! It doesn’t look too nice anymore, it actually looks like it fell out of a moving truck on the highway…but it still runs like a new machine. I’ve never been a fan of any particular manufacturer, but Cub Cadet really got it right on this one. If I ever HAVE to replace this unit, I’ll be buying the exact same one again….it has been an incredible piece of equipment.
      My only gripe is with the string choices for it, there’s not a lot of different options available…and it does use quite a lot of it. The reason I’m going through so much string is because I use the string mower as a mini bush hog, I cut goldenrod, wild blackberry bushes, pine and oak saplings, and a lot of other brush with heavy stalks. The best string I’ve found so far is the three sided string and the star shaped string….but be very careful if you’re cutting around the edges of your house or fence because it will certainly damage your home, fence, and anything else the string touches. This string mower is very very capable of clearing almost any type of foliage…..
      Good luck with whichever string mower you decide to purchase, just don’t forget to get extra string for it. I’d recommend picking up a couple of different types of small amounts of string…just so you will figure out what works best for you. Then check Amazon for a large spool of the type that works best…..it’ll be much cheaper this way.
      Have a wonderful day and thank you for your input! God bless you and your family!

      @StandingGoatsRescue thank you again for the video. Also, a very big thank you for your response to my comment. The string I got is 3 sided. I'm north of Detroit. My plan is to take this trimmer to northern Michigan to clear shooting lanes at deer camp. Some years, it gets so wet we can't get the tractor with the brush hog where we need to get it without getting it stuck. I pray God blesses you and your family.

    Thanks for this review & this video! I'm a retired teacher with 3 acres that I have to maintain by myself. I'm 74 & needed something that I could manage easily to clear some areas of my land where I can't go with my riding mower. I've been
    looking at different reviews of walk behind string tirimmers. This one is offered at Home Depot as well & they will deliver it. You're going to love how well the string mower cuts, it's one heck of a mower...there's not much that cannot cut. Since the recording of that video I have cut an amazing amount of brush with it. I'm on my second large roll of string and probably went through roughly 24 gallons of gas...and it still runs like it did the very first time I used it. I thought that I would have been posting a video about wear-and-tear on it by now, but I don't see that happening anytime soon...and I'm so very thankful for that! I also purchased my CC ST-100 at TSC in which I tried the Shakespeare replacement 18 inch yellow line within the clear tube in addition to the OEM Orange line that came with the trimmer. TSC also sells the trimmer line by the spool which is bright yellow and has very pronounced edges which really cuts well. The line on the spool reminds me more of the commercial trimmer line which is usually more durable. Best Regards From Central KY.

    I've had one of these for almost 2 years and it has been the best. When I pull it out for the first mowing session of the year, it takes two pulls to get it started. After that, it starts on the first pull. It's a beast when it comes to cutting grass and tall, thick weeds. Happy with my purchase. The thick strings last all afternoon or until you try to tackle weeds with stalks bigger than your finger.

    I have a Southland trimmer -- looks almost exactly the same. If I turn it off like you did to pick up some sticks etc, it will not start again. I have to go inside and drink a glass of tea and come back in ten mins, then it will start. Otherwise, it's great ... as long as I don't ask it to do something it wasn't designed to do. It doesn't do ditches at all well. It's top heavy and falls over on any incline more than about 25 deg. Interesting though, when it's cold it starts right up. But not when hot.

      I have two of these ones a DR the others a southland. The southland has bad issues, your not supposed to have to give it a cool down like your saying but even mine has to cool down. I’ve ran a craftsman 22” walk behind string trimmer and that thing was a monster it got tangled in a barb wire fence and (of course) shut it self off I untangled it, pulled the string and it fired right up on the first pull.
      I’m thinking about replacing the engine on the southland it might be something to look in to.

    • @billhendrickson5506
      @billhendrickson5506 Před 3 lety +2

      I have one of these machines. As long as you don't run into sharp metal objects the string lasts a long time. The string is .155 thick. As to your regular trimmer I would try a different string brand. You want to use .095 size. Some brands are not very tough and shred easily. Ask others what they use and if they are happy or not and go from there. String brands are not created equal. You get what you pay for. I am speaking from experience, I have been cutting lawns for over 74 years. My equipment is Cub Cadet and I do my own maintenance.

    I recently bought some remote property on about 15 acres. I purchased a Cub Cadet ZT2-50 but found that it can't handle many of the steeper hills and slopes. How does this trimmer perform well on non-flat ground?

    • @StandingGoatsRescue
      @StandingGoatsRescue  Před 4 lety +1

      I cannot honestly answer that because I live in Florida...and it's as flat as water here. I've pushed it through some nasty vines/briers and it ate everything that got within the reach of the string...including an old chicken wire fence that I didn't know was there.
      By the way the Cub-Cadet string mower feels when I use it to clean up the culvert that runs under my driveway, I believe that it would be dangerous to use it on steep grades...it does feel a little top-heavy. If you were to slip and get your boot into contact with the strings, it would slice through the leather boot easily. I'm not a graceful man, actually I'm very clumsy....so personally I would not use it on a steep incline.
      I wish I could give you more of a descriptive answer, but I've never used it on any steep terrain except for the little Ditch in front of our home. It cut beautifully on the ditch, but I feel that it would possibly turn over on a steep incline.
      I hope this helps in some way, sorry I couldn't answer your question directly.
      Blessings to you and yours my friend!

My troybilt string trimmer was worn out the first year I had it, so I'll never buy another one from troy bilt. • @StandingGoatsRescue
      @StandingGoatsRescue  Před 4 lety +1

      Absolutely! We have 10 acres that used to be wooded until hurricane Michael, now it's a blast zone covered in briers and golden rod. My cub-cadet destroys it...but you'll need to get good quality line (string) for it. I'm using Pro Rhino .155 line now, but was using a Husqvarna line that wouldn't hold up against the thick briers. The Pro Rhino eats through 3/8 and 1/2 inch briers incredibly easily. Theres a type of .155 line that looks like a triangle if you look at a cross section of it, but I cannot remember where I got it or the name brand (ordered online)...but that stuff is the absolute best that I've ever used. I ordered three small spools of different types to see what worked best and the triangle shaped line was best by far. The Pro Rhino .155 I'm using now came from Home Depot...I purchased the largest spool I could find. The Cub-Cadet string trimmer is a powerful machine and itll wipe out a roll of cheap line, so try to find the highest quality line possible and you'll never look back.

Empty the gas tank and fill it with this mixture (a couple of pints)... Then start it and let it run until it starts stuttering and smoking real bad...and shut it off. Let it sit overnight, drain the tank again and fill it with fresh gas. Crank it and let it run until it clears out and runs smooth. If that fixes it, then the carburetor was dirty. I have not had any issues with mine whatsoever. I've put hundreds of hours on it now, possibly over 300 hrs and I haven't had to clean the carburetor yet. I do use seafoam and non-ethanol in it and all of my equipment, maybe that's the reason for it running so good. I'm sure there are a few lemons produced, as with every other piece of equipment made... but the one I have is a fantastic machine. I do not like cub-cadet lawn mowers or lawn tractors at all...they have a poor track record here in the south, but this string trimmer is a top-notch piece of equipment in my opinion. I had a very nice/expensive Troy-Bilt String Trimmer too, but sold it recently because this Cub-Cadet is so much better and starts every time I pull the cord. The Troy-Bilt had carburetor issues about every 25-30 hours of use, and the belt had to be replaced every year. I've put enough money into repairs on the Troy-Bilt these last 3 years that I could have bought another new one. In my experience with these String Trimmers, Cub-Cadet is the top choice for me. There are a lot of moving parts on the carburetor for sure, but it has been absolutely flawless for me so far. When it wears out, I will be buying another one....it has earned a permanent place on our farm.

If I ever encounter a problem that requires me to remove the carburetor, then I'll add an aftermarket inline fuel filter while its apart.
