    The mechanism of this cube is fundemantally a modernized Huachuang (which is the 2-shell design, and approximate similar anchor size, and this stabilizes the cube a lot. The Gan 5 thinned the center stalk and added the ball core, and is much more hollow and therefore light), with slight references to the Bochuang (which is Aochuang GTS/WRM's anti-deforming mech, but smaller) and Wushuang (the corner design, which also carried over to Valk and Hong)

    In my experience, GAN cubes in general need a lot of break in. Like… hundreds to thousands of solves before they feel amazing. And some just never do.
    For example, I’ve owned every version of the GAN 11 M Pro. The first one I got was the “soft” coated. It had the most terrible internal lockups from what felt like some pieces not being the right size. The UV version had a similar feeling, although slightly better. The black version was PERFECT for performance, but I’m not a fan of the matte finish.
    So I put the UV shells onto the black pieces, added the logo-less UV replacement cap, and I have the best cube I’ve ever used. It gets better every day I use it, and it’s already been a couple years.
    The GAN 12 had major lockup issues when it first released, I got the special edition CHAN version, and it doesn’t compare. I know that many Cubers had the same feeling around the 12, but they must have improved the design after the first batch.
    Lesson: don’t buy a new GAN until it’s been out for a while and all the kinks have been ironed out, then cross your fingers it’s a good one.

    I am definitely looking forward to trying this, I think when comparing it (as well as the hong) with other 5x5s, it is a much closer comparison when you are considering custom core magnetic options of the MGC and AoChuang WRM, I reckon core magnets simply save me 3 seconds per solve. Ultimately I am not sure whether the Hong comes on top, I will have to try the Gan 5x5 and see if it just outright outperforms the Hong and others. I am guessing Max Park hasn't switched?

    Not sure I agree with some of the assertions made with the X-Man Hong when comparing to the Gan. I don’t have the Gan yet, but the key with the Hong that may reviewers seem to have misunderstood with the Hong, is the fact that QiYi factory lube needs to be wiped out right away before using because it creates high static friction, which not only causes the pieces to feel rough, but it negates the benefit of magnets in many cases since the layers won't be able to properly align, and reduces corner cutting ability which causes those lockups in the first place as a result of edge pieces not being able to rub against each other; and you can tell at 7:00 that there is not only still plenty of static friction on the surface of those pieces from not having fully wiped out the factory lube and reapplying lube on the pieces, but also that the cube is a bit too loose.
    Moreover, the assertion made at 6:39 that the Hong gets corner twists seems potentially misleading at best. Sure you can get the hong to corner twist, but only when the cube is on unreasonably loose tensions after lubrication. Once the Hong is properly set up, the tensions should pretty much tighter than what they were from the factory. Corner cutting is hardly sacrificed when doing so (in fact the reverse corner cutting on the outer layers will improve as well), and the cube becomes much more stable afterwards. Compared with the Gan, I’ll have to see for myself, but I highly implore you to try to properly setup the Hong, or at least talk about the current setup of the Hong in the video before making comparisons with the Gan.
    (Edit: I've made a few points of clarification in the original comment and adjusted some wording as I've realized some things may have come off a bit accusatory. For reference though, I use Gravitas in the inner portions of the pieces and Dignitas on the outer portions and the cubies, as well as plenty of DNM-37. Ideally, the entirety of a wing edge on the hong should not be able to be visible under the skirt of the center edge.)

    • @answer610
      @answer610 Před měsícem +3

      The fact that you have to wipe out the entire cube in order to make the hong usable just makes the GAN more preferable imo. As some who owns both and did a lot of work on the hong, the GAN’s performance still beats the hong’s even ootb.

    • @yankeeromeoalpha
      @yankeeromeoalpha Před měsícem +3

      @@answer610 100%, and I don’t disagree with the fact that QiYi’s insistence on using practical “glue” to lubricate their cubes is beyond me despite the community’s pleas for them to stop. I also don’t doubt that the Gan cube probably beats the competition in terms of performance, but you can also highlight that fact without making exaggerating or potentially misleading claims about other cubes without talking about the setup beforehand.

    • @JRCuber
      @JRCuber Před měsícem +2

      I’d be curious to hear more about high static friction in regards to lubricant, I’ve never heard of lubricant affecting corner cutting like that. I’ve never had a cube suddenly develop worse corner cutting after adding a certain lube. Also, I’ve been maining the hong for months, I’ve done thousands of solves on it. I have it at good tensions. It still corner twists. I don’t think this is misleading or an exaggeration, I’m literally just sharing my experience with the cube. I didn’t say it corner twists every other solve, just that it CAN happen.

    • @yankeeromeoalpha
      @yankeeromeoalpha Před měsícem +1

      @@JRCuber The main thing particularly with corner cutting is the pieces' ability to rub against each other. Certain fast silicone lubes (and especially spray lubes like QiYi still uses) directly on plastic causes the kinetic friction to decrease (fast feeling), but causes the static friction to increase; a heavier lube directly on plastic by contast reduces static friction, but increases the resistance to turning (slow feeling). With Dignitas in particular though, you can achieve both a fast and frictionless feel, by adding DNM-37 on top as Chris Tran highlighted in one of his videos (as I'm sure you're familiar as well), therefore by applying Dignitas to the entire cubie (excluding where you hold the cube), the static friction holding the edges back from rubbing against each other during a corner cut is nearly eliminated, as well as for the center and corner. This is why I believe the setup of a cube is just as, if not more important than the actual mechanism of the cube, where cubes that were often dismissed as unviable for competition for their performance I've been able to get my normal 15-20 second averages at home with the right setup.
      And to be honest though, it's not your fault that you may necessarily find certain aspects of the cube to perform differently, I've seen a lot of people make similar performance claims about the Hong (and other QiYi cube for that matter) without talking about the way they setup the cube, which I just find unfortunate because if QiYi would just stop applying their spray lube on every one of their cubes since at least the Valk 3 M, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion, and the reviews would also probably have a greater general consensus to them. I think if reviewers in general talked about how their cube was set up before talking about their experience, then it would make not only reviews more credible (as you've certainly highlighted with the Gan 5x5 itself by highlighting the "grindiness" of the cube out of the box and the smoother feel after setup), but also when comparing other cubes, to briefly note how the cube was set up to provide additional context to the viewer, and I think it would benefit the community greatly.
      (If you want, I'll be at the NxN comp in June if you want to try my Hong and I can explain what I mean better than I can through a keyboard lol)

    • @JRCuber
      @JRCuber Před měsícem +1

      @@yankeeromeoalpha yeah I’d definitely like to try your Hong! I’m sort of following what you’re saying, but I think I’d need to feel it for myself to really get it. And you can try mine too, the tensions definitely could be tighter, but I don’t think it’s that loose. I agree that setup is super important though, and I think cubes should always come completely dry. I’ve definitely had cubes that were basically dead on arrival cause the factory lube was so bad (and even cleaning wouldn’t get the feeling fully out), but I didn’t experience that with the Hong. It felt pretty smooth and fast right away, and I didn’t notice much roughness like you mentioned in your first comment. I’m still skeptical that those specific snappy reverse cuts would actually get better by wiping out the factory lube, I gotta feel it to believe it I guess 😆

  • @NebraskanSpeedsolverOffi-zi1bi

    I don't seem to get the whole thing with the inners being worse than the outers on the Hong. I've done around 1200 solves on my Hong and the layers feel really consistent and they are both super fast. I don't think I'll pick up a GAN but I do think that it will be good.

    When gan or moyu release big cubes it's more obvious they are charging way too much for 3x3s. I'm pretty sure the cost of producing this cube is more than twice (I would say even thrice) the cost of producing a 3x3, but still, the 3x3 is more expensive.
    I remember when 3x3s where $10-$15 and the firsts 5x5, 6x6, ... where like $30-$40, until Yuxin dropped prices of big cubes by releasing a great cheap 5x5. Now companies, instead of compete by lowering prices, they seem to ally with each other to charge as much as they can to customers, and thats sad.

      Don't try to compare 5x5 and 3x3 hardware

      @@domingoanoite68 no i'm not comparing. i'm surprised to see that gan is using screws for the very first time, or may be in the megaminx earlier...i dont know

      @@asadcubing The centers on a megaminx are big enough to fit the normal dual adjustment system, but as demonstrated with the original Gan 460, shoehorning a GES nut into a center that small proved to be wildly impractical, and on a 5x5 would have been even more so, so they really didn’t have much of a choice; honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they do the same thing with their new upcoming 4x4 as well…
