    As a Glaswegian, we knew them as tottie scones too! My whole family love them. Always in a Full Scottish Breakfast (or fry up) with sausage (lorne or link), back bacon, fried eggs, sometimes black pudding and occasionally baked beans. My dad especially loved something sweet in his fry up so would add fried fruit pudding slice or clootie dumpling slice or a pancake. He would make our breakfast every Sunday morning! So yummy! We would never add tomatoes. We only saw those in an English fry up!

    • @sirderam1
      @sirderam1 Před 4 lety

      Potato Scones are a savoury scone, they're not meant to be eaten with strawberry jam.
      In Scotland they're usually a breakfast dish, eaten with eggs (fried, scrambled, poached, etc, according to your preference), bacon, perhaps sausage. Fried tomatoes and mushrooms also work well with them. Given the amount of calories and cholesterol in this sort of fried breakfast it is usually a weekend treat rather than an everyday breakfast.
      Potato (Tatty or Tottie) Scones will keep in the fridge for a few days and in the freezer for months. Re-heating is usually the same method as the original cooking but just for a shorter time. If they've been frozen then they would need to defrost before re-heating.

    I'm going to have to try those. I used to eat something like that as a kid in South Carolina. The difference was that the mashed taters were mixed with cornmeal. It was all rolled out, cut in circles with an old empty can and fried up in bacon grease. It was pretty tasty, especially with a little karo. We called them hoecakes and a bunch were cooked at once in the big frying pan. Never saw them cut up in triangles or anything. I always liked them better than grits.

    Being vegan I don't add milk and I do use margarine. They still taste yummy. I even bought some from the local British store and they used instant potatoes which weren't too bad. My granda from County Down in Ireland also called them fadge maybe it's a left over Irish word. In Belfast, my native city, we called them potato farls. They were usually fried in the pan with bacon, eggs and soda farls for breakfast. Thanks a million for the recipe - I always just guessed what to do and it turns out we both make them pretty much the same .

    Lovely I had an Auntie who made all the time . You made me hungry. Mom would have roast beef and gravy when she'd be in a hurry. Like working in the field at harvest time. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for making the effort to educate us. I love Scottish food. What you are saying about moving away is so true. I have moved to Finland and funny enough they have a local delicacy here in the East of Finland that is exactly like Scottish Potato scones ....but everything costs so much here due to the high wages everyone gets ( due to high tax). So I like you have started to learn to make my own food. I have a Russian partner who loves food from around the world and worked in India. So I am learning Indian cooking too from CZcams. But I will be looking at your videos for inspiration. Because I used to love Scottish food. I used to visit Greenock a lot and would eat a lot of bakery products from Aulds :)) Best wishes to you ;)

      Thank you for your lovely message. I am so glad you did make this video. I am loving them so much I boiled up another batch of potatoes tonight and I am going to make some more to pop in the freezer. We take so much for granted when we live our daily lives. Its only when your life takes you far away from home that you realise that you wished you had learned to make things. Thanks to your nice video I have successfully learned to make them and a going to love making them for my partner :)..who will love to eat nice different things. We both worked on a ship in Ireland ( where we met) and he loved all the Irish bakery items I introduced him to :))

    My old Grandad Tom used to make these on a Monday with leftover spuds from the Sunday dinner. That was back in Manchester England in the early 60's when I was a kid. They were always called 'tater cakes' back then.

      It’s perfect! Not a hair out of place! She’s a comedian in the US and spent several months living in Edinburgh and says how the Scottish women go all out to make their hair look good. I guess I assumed it was a stereotype based on what she said but I can see how my comment could be read as a diss. Sorry from the confusion.

    Fresh home made tattie scones are delicious with butter.
    Factory ones need frying, bacon fat is best, serve with egg, and a few mushrooms cooked in the frying pan, thats everyday breakfast.
    Add black pudding, hard fried, and a sausage from a burcher. , a tony tomato halved and fried for garnish😊
